Rhett, you can’t stare down a cat, eye contact is a sign of aggression. He even blinked at you when you were being aggressive, that means he trusts you, that’s a confident cat right there!

It actually depends majorly on how they are raised. I've had my cat since I found her as a stray kitten, and she's highly interactive and literally won't stop trying to make eye contact so she can get my attention and roll over, trying to make me drop whatever I'm doing and pay attention to her. She crawls onto my chest every morning and purrs while just gazing into my eyes. Half of the time, we "hold paws" while she does this as well.

It's less like aggression and more like having unbroken eye contact shows wariness and that you're cautious of the cat. In other words, if they make a move, you're ready to throw down. Blinking means "I'm comfortable and feel safe enough around you that I don't have to be on guard at all times."

Your actually wrong.. dogs use eye contact as aggression, cats use eye contact for affection, and when they slow blink like that, it's there way of giving you kisses. Heck some will lick and slow blink.

What are colloquially known as "kitty kisses" are not cats giving kisses because cats are not humans. This is an example of cat owners projecting human characteristics onto cats because they want to believe their cats can be on the same level of affection as us. While it certainly can be a form of affection, it's also commonly how a cat shows they are comfortable around you and that their guard is lowered, as I had originally said.

Jade is a calm dog so it makes sense that Barbra doesn't mind her, it makes her feel superior, cats are more confident and Barbra felt threated by that in her own home, if they brought a dog who wasn't nutured/spayed who was energetic she'd probably feel threatened like that too, I work at a doggy day care and every time a new puppy comes in there are a few dogs that sometimes feel threatened by their presents 😂 they get used to them pretty quickly though

Towards the end, when Rhett is having the chat with Fireball, he gives Rhett a few slow blinks. That’s pretty much the cat equivalent of a smile. It generally means they’re chill and content. So basically, Fireball was sat there with a big dumb “Haha, i made your dog spaz out” grin on his face 🤣

Except it's not a smile so why try to humanize an animal in a way that's not true. Slow blinks is just a "I won't attack you if you don't attack me" signal that cats give each other.

pretty sure those were just regular blinks. he still looked a little stressed out at the end. when cats give the slow blink to express happiness, their eyes are more squinty, like the eyelids are a little more closed and the eyes look kind of upturned in the corner (? I don't know how to describe it with words lol). Fireball's eyes were pretty wide, and with the way he was still looking around and sitting in a not so relaxed position makes me think he was still feeling pretty cautious about the situation.

"A nice controlled environment- like your home..." is the exact problem Barbara had. Jade had a little bit of a leg up since it wasn't her territory but Barbara had a very low chance of this going well.

Yup, that was obvious from the start. Anyone who's had dogs knows that often dogs will be loud and defensive about their home, barking at passersby but will not do this anywhere else. Because it's their home. Introducing Barbara to the cat elsewhere and then bringing them to the home together would have been the proper thing to do. This is also the best way to adopt new pets, make sure your dog is there when you select and pick up the animal and let it get to know it before bringing it home.

Fireball's reaction wasn't entirely the same with both. He got puffy (his tail puffed up) with Barbara and he went to his owner or behind furniture. That's a concerned cat. I was, however, very surprised at how calm this cat was in general. I think Jade would totally like a cat friend.

We weren't sure of his age as he showed up on my porch one summer in 2014, super skinny and not neutered. But super snuggly and with a very loud purr. When I took him to be neutered, get vaccinated and microchipped, they estimated him to be around 3-4 years old. After My father passed way in July 2015, who I lived with since my divorce in 08 and I was his main caretaker, (He had already had his left foot amputated below the knee and bypass heat surgery a year after the amputation all from complications from his Type 1 Diabetes. He died from kidney failure and was at home on hospice). Redrock became such a living help through my grief and became an indoor only kitty. Although I'd take him for walks on his harness and lag, which he LOVED! Eight months after my dad had died, my 19 year old son died suddenly from Addison's Disease. I was devastated and my world turned upside down. Once again, I had Redrock there, who always showed up when I started to cry and snuggled on my chest. That was his favorite spot to sleep, too, or snuggled up against my legs. Also, just before my son died, in January 2016, I had finally kicked out my abusive boyfriend of 7 years! With the help of my moms, by the way. Especially since my dad left me the house we lived in and I'd been wanting him gone for awhile. So there was a lot going on since my dad had passed away. Redrock helped by always making me laugh because he hated me disappearing behind the shower curtain, as if I'd never come back! He'd meow for me and paw at the curtain! He had terrible anxiety, thunder, fireworks, the garbage truck, Harley engines our loud noises really upset him. Over the 4th of July holiday in 2016, he developed a terrible UTI that his vet suspected was stress induced. He was in the hospital for four days before the vet believed he'd heal better at home because if his anxiety. She put him on teaspoons 3 times a day after that for anxiety. In Utah we celebrate Pioneer day on the 24th of July, which means more fireworks. So he had a recurrence of his UTI, but not as bad. She prescribed antibiotics, pain meds and muscle relaxants and flushed out his bladder. But sent him home instead of letting him this time. He was better so much faster! Then summer of 2018 he stated vomiting for some reason and stopped eating or drinking unless I held a little bowl up to his face while holding him. Only then would he drink water. The vet did some bloodwork and xrays and an ultrasound. She said it might be his pancreas or liver. She loaded me up with wet kitten did (he normally ate wet, with crunches always out), instructions to feed him baby food turkey or chicken, cheese just to get him to eat something and drink water. Pain meds and a lot of anti-nausea meds. The meds helped him to eat and drink, but he was still going down hill and she said she was sorry, but there wasn't anything she could do but make him comfy. I said I wanted to do home hospice then, rather than stress him by taking him to her office. She thought that best, too and in his best interest. A week later, I was up all night with him. He came to my recliner, I helped him up and he didn't want water. I snuggled him in my chest and took one last picture of us. He then wiggled down and laid on the foot stool, coughed a loud cough and he was gone. 😭 I held him and cried for like 45 min before calling his vet. He'd passed away at 6:30am. He was only in my life for 4 years, but they were years I truly needed him!
