as someone with GERD I frequently get colonoscopy + endoscopy procedures done, and in australia drs use twilight anesthesia for these procedures so patients are conscious but sedated. As a patient you feel unconscious and don't remember but you are talking and technically awake during (lightly restrained if you tend to move in your sleep)

I've got juvenile familial polyposis, where my gi tract/colon gets frequent polyps, and Ive had a colonoscopy/endoscopy (a spitroast, if you will) every 1-2 years since I was 20. The anesthesia is my reward for making it through the prep.
