I went back and watched your video on the Osage murders again after I watched this video. I have never read the book the film was taken from but I know the stories of most of these poor unfortunate people from other studies. This atrocity, like that of black wall street in Tulsa are both stories of prejudice, greed and pure evil. It is imperative that the unvarnished truth comes out in this film as you have so diligently shown it in your video. It is interesting to see how the film industry can transform a town to another place and time with what looks like apparent ease. Although you can see through the facade when close up the camera can easily fool the eye. I am looking forward to the release of the film.

I knew of the happenings but not the individual stories until David's book. He exposed quite a few but as I walk thru cemeteries in Osage County I know there are 100's more. My hope is that families will be willing to investigate and share more. Thank you for going back and watching one of the first videos I have done on the subject.

Thank you so much for watching! I highly recommend the book. It was a great read and difficult to put it down once I started. It's sad and horrific story that needs to be told. If you read the book then be sure to check out the video I did on the final resting places and a few locations talked about in the book. After read it I had a thirst for learning more so that video is sort of a supplement for anyone who has read it.

Hi Rhetty, wow, what an awesome video. I’ve never heard of the book or the movie, but now I can’t wait to see it. I hope the room you guys stayed in makes an appearance in the movie. I am really amazed at how much time and energy and money they spent transforming those various locations and homes. Very impressive. And I’m assuming Leonardo DiCaprio must be in the movie. I watched your entire video and maybe I missed it, but I don’t remember you saying why you guys were staying in that hotel. Did you make the trip just to see the filming location? Or were you there for another reason? Very cool! 😎👍

I'm very excited to see what Scorsese does with the movie and I hope he does the story justice. The book was excellent and after reading it I had a real thirst for more. So a few years ago I set off trying to find some locations as well as final resting places. I ended up filming in multiple cemeteries and towns. I have been up in that area quite a bit. Sarah is a fan of the Pioneer woman who is also in Pawhuska. So we have been up there for that. Some time I'll have to go out to her ranch and show her studio where she records her cooking shows. But we usually eat at her restaurant when we are there. I knew of the filming taking place up there and I wanted to document it but I also had some other stories in the area that I wanted to do. There really is a lot of history in this area of the state. Time will tell on the room but it would be neat if we stayed in a room that was featured in the movie. I just found it odd that everything had been changed. And now when you look at the hotels website it looks like it has been changed back. Thank you for watching my friend!

Oh I knew about this happening for sure. I read the book and loved it. Following the book I wanted to know more and to experience the history for myself so I started trying to find the locations as well as the final resting places. I put all of those into a video a few years ago. The buzz was around for awhile that it wad going to be a movie but we weren't quite sure who would be making it. Late 2018 and 2019 it was announced that it would be Scorcese with Deniro and Decaprio starring in it. They went around scouting locations and speaking to people. They were set to begin filming in March of 2020 but we all know how that went. Scorsese was really set on filming here in Oklahoma thanks in a large part to the Osage wishing it be done here. It has also been important that they be heard and listened to since it is their history. All of those relationships are great to see happen. Filing finally picked back up about a year later which was this year. There is a lot of history in this area of Oklahoma so I have been there quite a bit and have done a few stories. I will certainly be back for more. Thanks for watching my friend!

Neat video. Thanks for taking us along on your visit. The first time I was in Pawhuska was the summer of 69. I was working a summer job counting cars for the highway dept. before college. I traveled all over the state doing this. It was busy downtown at that time because of the oil and gas and lease paperwork. I heard the the Ford dealer had a Boss 429 on display, so at about noon I went by to have a look. I drove up in a state car with the seal on the door, so the salesman thought I had a good job. He met met me at the door and I explained I was here to look at the Boss mustang and was headed back to school in the fall. He showed me around the car and was very friendly. He told me he was having a slow day so let's take one out for a spin. We left in Green Mach I with a 351 and shaker hood. When we got to downtown where the Wedge building is all the secretaries were going to lunch from that building and the courthouse. That was when I realized why he wanted to go cruising downtown. I saw a Boss sell at Barrett-Jackson a few years ago for a Million. The sticker on that one was 5800.

What first peaked my interest in this movie was learning about them bringing a full-size train in for filming. The train was a steam locomotive and three coaches from the Virginia & Truckee tourist railroad in Nevada, which were temporarily relettered as Santa Fe (a railroad that once ran through Pawhuska and Fairfax), and the depot and maybe 1,000 or so feet of track were placed. I believe it'll just be for people arriving in town, like FBI agents or something, so only one or a couple scenes. It would have been awesome if the track could have been left in place, and maybe the depot too, along with any improvements made to the buildings in Pawhuska that don't ruin their authenticity. I know the track and depot were dismantled and removed, but I'm not sure about building improvements.

Yes they do and sometimes that works out good for the shop owners. I know of one case in Pawhuska where a shop owner was pregnant. She was going to have to close the shop and would not have made any profit on her own. Being self employed there is no such thing as maternity leave. But the movie had great timing this year as it paid her for the time off she spent with her baby. Any idea what the movie is that they are working on near you?

I thoroughly enjoyed this video! You are so knowledgeable about all of this, they should have had you working on the set! You pointed out things I would have never noticed. Even though they weren’t currently filming, it was nice that they allowed you to walk the set and film. When you see all of the work they have to do, you can understand why it is so expensive to make a movie. I wonder if they have to pay the shops where they filmed and if they go back and repaint the houses? Did it look like they used any of the Pioneer Woman’s shops? Sorry for all of the questions, but this was very fascinating! I’ll have to look for the book and wait for the movie. Martin Scorsese never disappoints! Thanks again for your captivating video!
@RhettyforHistory
@RhettyforHistory 3 жыл бұрын
I'm a big fan of Scorsese and I hope he does this story justice. This needed a big name and budget to make it happen. They did not mess with the Pioneer Woman's end of the downtown. I think that is because of the hotels and her businesses. When I heard they were using Pawhuska I figured they would because the triangle building is pretty iconic in that downtown. As far as the smaller businesses that were out of work they were well compensated for their time off. I know of one lady who had a baby and as a self employed business owner she would not have been paid staying at home. Since they paid her she was able to spend time with her baby and have paid maternity leave. It was good timing for her. As far as the houses being painted it really depends. The houses that are occupied may want to keep the colors while others do not. Many of those houses were abandoned so it really was the perfect place filming. Hopefully this gives people some pride in their town and possible some others are enticed to move there. There is a lot of potential in the town of Fairfax just like there is in Pawhuska. They just need a little boost. Most of the down town in Fairfax is empty. The Osage have some renewed interest in the town though. They recently purchased the Maria and Marjorie Tall Chief home. It was basically abandoned and vandalized with tons of junk in it. I have a video on Sarah's channel, History Happens, that shows how bad it was. They are currently renovating it which is exciting to see, Things like that and this movie could really turn this town around. I am hoping the Tall Chief theater will be next! Thank you for watching!

Good professional-appearing video. Two corrections, however: Those are NOT power poles. Those are open wire exchange telephone circuits. "There are no lines going into the insulators, though." Actually, the line was run the full length of poles--as you will not the last four have had their crossarms removed after originally being set with arms and line conductor. I don't know why these were removed, but the staples of wire to the arms was a temporary measure for filming, I assume. The other poles and arms, if you examine them carefully and are observant, find the line conductors properly tied to the correct insulator pairs and transposed as would a line of the period. The insulators are all pre-1910 and the arms are well over a hundred years old, using oak and locust pins on fur treated crossarms with steel 30" span braces. Terminals on three hero poles are 1920s period.
@RhettyforHistory
@RhettyforHistory 3 жыл бұрын
As far as the poles they put them up for the movie and were not there before. I should have shown the cement base where thatched be seen. The wires were more of a wire you would see for fencing rather than telephone or power. You'll see these telephone piles and wires with the insulators across Oklahoma in different spots and especially along railroad tracks. The film itself will never be up that close to the poles or lines much less many of the other facades so it truly is movie magic how they do it. It's been really neat to see something like that up close and personal. Thank you for watching.

Before I forget..most of the massace victims are buried either in Old Fairfax (greyhorse district Osage nation burial cemetary)or the Fairfax cemetery itself... I've seen some crazy things out at Greyhorse cemetery...That place creeps me out at 2am...

I have a video that has some of the victims discussed in the book. They are at Pawhuska, Grey Horse and Fairfax. I did that one a few years back. Of course I see quite a few others that are most likely victims in other Osage County cemeteries.

This hotel has several as just part of the decorations. They are used as flower pots and then they have buffalo and goat skulls in them. The owner is really nice and he purchased this hotel when it was really ran down. Over the last few years he has really done a lot of work to it.

Tragic time in America and what happened to the Osage Nation. How did non-Osage become owners of "headrights" to the oil fortune? University of Oklahoma, University of Texas, the Drummond family ( The Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond), and 2,000 other non-Osage?

I am Choctaw from Oklahoma,and I’ve spent a lot of time with Osage people .I always thought it was wild that so many of the living descendants on both sides of all this-actually still live close by each other! This is American History that should be known.

There are descendants that are physically and genetically both sides of this. This is part of the Osage history and story. I'm thankful that the rest of the world is now learning about it and hopefully it will never be repeated. Thank you for watching!
