I was the assistant director at a women's shelter in 2012. We had a kitchen with no stove. Those electric skillets allowed us to cook for, sometimes, 70+ women and children. Home Depot, graciously, donated a fully furnished kitchen to us in 2014. We were so grateful. However, those days of using several electric skillets and the fellowship with the women while cooking was certainly not lost on any of us.

The mention of Bun Warmers sparked a memory of a Garfield Strip, which after looking it up, was from September 18, 1980. And as for Ice Cream Makers, that immediately made me think of the character of Willrow Hood from Empire Strikes Back. If the name doesn't sound familiar, that's ok, he's a background character that was only named decades later as a result of the Star Wars fandom wanting an intricate backstory for anyone who was ever on screen, no matter how brief.

oh my gosh, I have the the large gold crockpot, the super shooter cookie press, the electric knife, the meat slicer (I still use and love it. Still have all my fingertips.) waffle iron, large skillet, and popcorn maker. I had the super sealer, fondue, plastic coffee pot, can opener, ice cream maker. Makes me feel old seeing the exact ones I have in the pictures, lol.

By the end of the 70s, I was still a teenager. I remember the electric can opener in our household. Now as a baby boomer, I still make my own cream (I know what's in it), have a waffle iron; I can try many different recipes (can't do that with frozen ones), and make popcorn on the stove. Much better. Sometimes old practices produce the best results.

You're right about that David. Some of these items I have never had but many of them I still have and use on a regular basis. Thank you for watching!

Was there a little gadget like a waffle iron, but designed to cook individual hamburgers ... or did I dream that? also ... If you had a pet, I bet he came running when he heard that electric can opener.
@melissalehman289127 күн бұрын
Yes, I believe it was called "presto burger". We had one of those.
@RhettyforHistory26 күн бұрын
Yes, I think you got that one Melissa. That of course was around before the Foreman Grill which is another thing that many people just don't seem to use anymore. Thank you for watching and mentioning that kitchen appliance Tim!

Hi Rhetty! 😊 Thanks for the memories. I remember my parents using the electric blade especially during this time of the year. Also, the electric skillet, which my mom used when she didn't feel like cleaning extra pots. I used to love when my mom made ice cream with the ice cream maker.🥰 My aunt had the coffee percolator and used to reuse the coffee cans to store other things like receipts in them.

What a flashback. I think we had most of these gadgets when I was a kid. I do believe Mom's fondue set is tucked away in one of my cupboards. Why do I still have it? I have no idea. I still have her cookie press too. I do use it. Fondue night was fun so maybe I thought I'd use it. Nope, not yet, lol.

It's tough to part ways with things that have special memories associated with them. Especially if they are items that were enjoyed by people we love. I completely get it and I also have some things like that so you are not alone. Thank you for watching pannalover326!

My parents had a fondue set even though it wasn't so cool anymore at that time. I can't remember them using it at all. They put it away in the storage room. My grandpa had an electric knife. Now that is something I remember in action, as he used to cut the turkey in a family dinner during Xmas! He was so proud.. When talking about the ice cream maker you mentioned it's easier to buy ice cream in the store... I don't know how the economy is in the US, but in my country ice cream price has risen too much to afford, thus I bought an ice cream maker attachment for my mixer to make my own and much cheaper. Oh and I remember the pop corn maker too. We still use it sometimes during the year but not too often... Nice video. Lots of memories, as there are appliances I remember seeing in other houses too.

Thank you for watching and sharing some of the items that your family has had and used. Things are definitely a lot higher and especially with what wages are. Pay has not risen in the same percent as products and everything else has. Depending on the brand of ice cream it can get quite expensive. What I will say is there are several different kinds of luxury ice cream that didn't exist 40 years ago. At least not in my area. I have never tried them because I just can't bring myself to spend that kind of money on them. No matter how much those things are there are people that are buying it. They keep selling it and people will always pay more for convenience.

I still have a fondue set. I still use it sometimes. I enjoy it a few times a year. I have an electric knife, which I use at least a few times a month. I use a different type of seal a meal to store food cooked and uncooked it vaccum seals. I still use my 1970s crockpot it still works and the liner and lid is perfect still.

Thank you for watching and sharing a little of what you have and use Kirk. A lot of these things are just as handy but I guess many people just don't want to mess with them. We have a lot of the old appliances that I grew up on and the great thing is how they still work. They built them to last because we use them quite a bit.

I remember my mother's percolator. She had the one with the cute flowers on it & used it clear into the 90's. I thought of her immediately when I saw it. I miss her. I'm from the Mr. Coffee auto drip maker generation and still use one even though I tried the new fangled Keurigs.

A great thing about being a child in the 80s is I got to see some of these products when I visited my aunt or my grandmother. Oftentimes products created in the 60s and the 70s rolled over into the 80s.

I remember all these things and had a few. I still have a seal a meal though it is much newer than the one I had back in the 70's. I also still have an electric skillet but don't use it often. Still use my crockpot often. My mom had one of the smaller ones and hated it because you could not take the inside out to wash. I always love watching your videos and taking a walk down memory lane.

We had an electric skillet similar to the one you featured. It was ideal for pancakes and eggs because of the non-stick surface. We also had a Crockpot exactly like the one at the 7:56 mark. Mom would slow cook beans or split pea soup in it. Both of these devices remained operational until a couple of years ago.

My mom had a coffee can of grease and lard that she would use over an over again. She would strain out the food particles and then just rewarm it up to fry chicken or whatever else. That was something a lot of people in my family did and it all just seemed to taste better. Thank you for watching TopGunAce23!

I clearly remember the fondue craze of the early ‘70s. Everyone I knew was giving and receiving fondue sets as Christmas, wedding, anniversary presents. I recall shaking my head and thinking, “In two years, it’ll be shoved in the back of a closet.” If I was wrong, it was only in assuming people would use them longer than they did.

When we were very young my mom made popcorn in a pan until we got an air popper. I have always made popcorn in a pan. I hate microwave popcorn. It is not allowed in my house. My son & daughter in law make popcorn in a pan. My little grandsons have never had microwave popcorn. I wish I had a stove top percolator. I remember as a very little girl having coffee from one. I have drank some coffee with my great aunt & grandmother. My son has drank coffee with both sets of grandparents since he was 4. We are both 6 feet tall disproving that coffee stunts your growth. Recently my neighbor dug out her stove top percolator & made coffee. Yum. Nectar of the gods. 😸 Excellent video as always❤

Wow, I must be a throw back. I still use a lot of these gadgets. I make my own waffles, pop popcorn, crockpot often, make my own yogurt, use a vacuum sealer, and I own an electric knife I use when slicing crusty loaves of bread that I bake. Surely I’m not the only one left who values making their own food, at least I hope not!
