I have just discovered Rhiannon who is not only a talented musician but has a great voice. Also a very good historian on Southern Country music and, particularly, black banjo players. I have been interested in the blues and Southern music since I was a teenager in the early fifties. Rhiannon you are a pleasure to listen too.

Ms. Giddens, you are clearly highly intelligent, well versed in history, and a talented musician. In short,you know your s$+%. The more of your music I have the opportunity to hear, the better. Your music is beautiful, and deeply moving, and it's an excellent refrain for the current day. I truly and deeply hope that influences such as yours can help us ACTUALLY deal with America's past and help build a more (and eventually completely) anti-racist future.
@mikelisacarb5 жыл бұрын
She nails it when pointing out the importance of carefully including minstrelsy in the canon of American music. It's a complicated situation, but the music that isn't blatantly racist should continue to live on.

Wow, that last tune 'Julie' is a real bone-chiller.
@markbernhardt62815 жыл бұрын
@Doug Green I like how you frame it as the war of northern aggression. Don't forget the south were traitors, all of them and they fired the first shot. The south preferred to go to war rather than let slavery run its course as was demonstrated.
@markcollins14975 жыл бұрын
Plenty of racism to go around back then, in the north as well as in the south. More complicated than the North being ‘good’ and South ‘bad’. Nonetheless, the south was a collection of slave states, and slaves were literally the backbone of the southern economy . They didn’t want to give that up. Ain’t just northern propaganda
@yes_anotherone32604 жыл бұрын
I don't find it bone-chilling. I find it hilarious that the mistress believes, after all of the violence she and her family perpetrated against Julie, that Julie will comply. It centers the black woman's voice. It calls out the particular evil of separating black families for white families' financial gain. It lays plain white women's role in the violence. Julie's like, "Peace. I'm out."
