Hi Thomas, There are commands that you can flatten a surface. Squish is one of it. The difference between those commands is the way of stretching and the % compression and expansion in some areas. None of them will be 100%. depends on the surface you want to flatten. some restriction may apply. for example. Unroll only apply on flat surfaces. and rest can be used on curve surface.

Hi, is there a way to get an accurately flattened surface from a developable (not double curved) surface such as in the twisted box example? In the video you show how "Unroll" and "Smash" flattens the twisted box with a 2.65% deviation, is there a way around it? Thanks.
@PJChenJewelryDesign
@PJChenJewelryDesign 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Shy, It depends on your application. If you try to design something in 2D and flow it back to 3D object. UV curve is your best choice. If you want to create something like papakura objects that I mentioned in the video. you can turn the surface in to small pieces of small polysurface then use unroll command. you can check my other video at kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5LClnydnd6Jjrs. thank you.
@shytavori5570
@shytavori5570 6 жыл бұрын
Hi PJ, thank you for the prompt reply. The application I was thinking about was similar to papercura perhaps: designing a 3d object>flattening>fabricating from sheet material>assembling to match original 3d object. Creating a polysurface from mesh (as shown in your video "Rhino 3D CAD Technique #1- Folding Paper Technique with Rhino 5") to create many planar surfaces is one way of doing this and the result will be a "pixelated" version of the 3d object. But if your 3d object is made from developable surfaces, as the twisted box, it is technically possible to get an exact model made of sheet material. So I was wondering if there's an accurate way of doing this without any deviations... thanks!
@PJChenJewelryDesign
@PJChenJewelryDesign 6 жыл бұрын
HI Shy, This is a very good and technical question. I don't have a 100% answer for you yet, but I did some research online and find the "DevSrf" extension may help you to solve the deviation issue. You can find the download the extension at wiki.mcneel.com/labs/devsrf . I also find an online discussion about the DevSrf command at discourse.mcneel.com/t/devsrf-how-to-use/44505/6 ,I will dive in the information later on. Let me know if you find the solusion. I would love to hear from you. Thanks.

@schmidtpe
@schmidtpe 6 жыл бұрын
I meant if the analysis shows... example:4% larger difference between the 3d surface and the flatted surface would scaling the flat surface up 4% correct the issue so both surfaces would have the same 'area'?
@PJChenJewelryDesign
@PJChenJewelryDesign 6 жыл бұрын
It is a very good question. I may not have a 100% answer since I am not an engineer. However, when a 2 direction surface has been flattened. The way the computer calculates the shrinkage is for the entire area. How it was actually stretched, I am not sure about that part. If you just doing a 3D scale. it is still showing the same boundary. It will only affect the flowing object size, when you flow back. but it does not change the 4% (for example) difference.
@schmidtpe
@schmidtpe 6 жыл бұрын
I experimented with it a little bit the other day but ran out of time ...however an experiment ... flatten the srf. check the 'area'... then flow it back and check the 'area' of the flowed surface compared to the original surface ..I'll give it a try interesting ..is this just a rhino thing? or does this happen on other software's?
