Rhino Grasshopper Sub-D tools are currently available only in Rhino 7 WIP version. You can get access to these Sub-D components if you have Rhino 6 license and download Rhino 7 WIP version from this link www.rhino3d.co...
In this tutorial, we’re going to go through basic manipulation of Sub-D component in both Rhino and Grasshopper and how to quickly edit free-form geometry. Very similar to T-splines, we can honestly say that these sub-d tools for Rhino and Grasshopper will be well worthy T-splines replacement. This particular project that was used as inspiration is designed by Daniel Widrig for Duhamel Competition in Germany.

You can after making the boolean difference use contour lines then extruded it over the Z direction. Just two steps to get that result. But also I like the assimply method to do that. Nice work !

I was wondering about this. I usually just use Weaverbird to do this. Is the dev version still available for Rhino 6 users?

You can get these effects by playing around with Rhino display modes, especially Arctic display mode :)

Hi Dusan i always appreciate to suggest cool & easy & free tutorial to the world. During i was following up your tutorial, i stuck at one issue. which is that the list item for one edge doesn't select one edge as same location as you did. The selected edge is at Y direction. so i can not cut up surface to z direction afterward. Q is how can i change the location of selection to where i want to. or how can i choose as same location as you had. Please let me know that answer and Thank you.

I've just finished a transport interior project with SubD in WIP7 Rhino, other than a few missing functions like welding verticies ande merging edges this feels like it is going to be much better than Tsplines because it is much more aligned with Rhino logic, eg you can shift/control to grab edges verts or faces and then LMB, drag and control to create new geometry... It looks like Rhino 7 is going to be what we were all hoping for in Rhino 6

Hi Braden! Yes, I couldn't agree more with you. I think the main thing is to test WIP as much as possible and especially the sub-d tools and report back to McNeel forum so they can iterate and perfect the tools much sooner. There are many other things that they are adding each week. It's really exciting to see this getting implemented! Feel free to share your project, I can feature it on How to Rhino Instagram page :)

@@HowtoRhino I would love to share because it has turned out great but the IP is sensitive because it it commercial work, perhaps I could do a 'different enough' for display version. A frustration is that because you are using control shift so much you can accidently throw your planar (top, right front) views into a perspective rotated view and then continualy have to reset them...

@@bradenwilson Yea, understood. Make sure to hit me up via email if you'd like to share the work when you change it. I share the same frustration, I know what you mean. It's a bit annoying but I've got used to working only in perspective so I don't have those problems anymore.

Isn't it easier to just take your cut geometry, contour it, use boundary surfaces, flatten the geometry, then extrude? I made a similar project with that method. My question is which method is better and uses less computational power from your computer?

Hi Tyler, thanks for your comment! Both versions work in a similar way. I just tested both versions and the speed is varied on both, sometimes version 1 is faster, sometimes version 2, so in this particular case I wanted to show more components and to show how they work with each other. Cheers!

Not exactly, SubD is a separate geometry type, it has it's own grasshopper component, but it can be transformed into brep if you convert it to nurbs object :)

or just use the contour node in gh or rhino. instead of hiding and showing nodes, click show selected only green cylinder on top right.

At least use bifocals plugin, it will help us to see the names in grasshopper. otherwise it is very difficult to understand that what are you doing.

okay for the form … could have been more organic to show the capabilties of SubD do not agree that SubD as it is right now is better than Tsplines ! But progressing … still a pretty long way For the part with GH you don't need Brep analysis and move by series. You can simply make contours & set the interval like u want with a slider then extrude all curves with the same interval

T-spline is a plugin for Rhino 5 that was used to create free-form and amorphic geometry. You can check some of my other tutorials where t-spline was used. For example this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGG5kn9vmbygmtE However, it is not supported anymore and these new Sub-D tools are a great substitution!
