It seems like the hard edges on the 2x4 would damage your hull over time. Using a round over bit on those edges would help avoid some of that damage.

Great observation I thought of that too after I put them on thinking it might damage the hull overtime but I did go back and put carpet on afterwards a couple months later and that gave me a buffer so I do recommend putting carpet on still even though the wood is being protected by the rhino lining. Appreciate you watching. Hope you subscribed.

I think the concept is good but I believe I would want carpet around that to cushion the boats gel coat. Many companies use black paint over the boards and then carpet them. That helps to seal the wood better before carpeting.

I did go back and put carpet back on top of it just to be on the safe side put so far so good.

pvc framing boards work better then carpet and they are very slick for unloading and loading if you are in a shallow launch and have to crank

Did you consider cutting a slope on the trailing end of the bunks instead of a square cut, which will help sling the boat to the bunk
@FishingWithCotton
@FishingWithCotton 2 жыл бұрын
I did consider doing that but I did not have a saw to do that with so it was to late when I was putting them on.

True test will be when you launch again. Will there be huge black marks on the hull, and when it gets hot will it stick to hull?
@FishingWithCotton
@FishingWithCotton 4 жыл бұрын
Correct, my theory is when it gets wet it will get slick but if I do not put the whole trailer in the water it will burn I do know that because rhino lining grips very well. I just have to make sure the trailer and the boards are completely underwater before I back out.

Rhino lining is textured. His boards were smooth. I believe carpet is the way to go. However, it's about preference!
@FishingWithCotton
@FishingWithCotton 2 жыл бұрын
It was smooth because the liner was absorbed into the wood and it smoothed out. It did protect the wood but made a thin coating.

Any marks on the boat since install? Thanks for sharing by the way

I got one mark on the boat after three times of loading it so I went back and put carpet on them. The good thing is that they will not and have not went bad like they normally would when you seal the wood like I did. Thanks for the question.

I'm curious what the rhino liner paint cost. I have an aluminum bass boat. I didn't want to use pressure treated wood because it's corrosive to the aluminum (even with carpet on it) so I used fiberglass resin on untreated 2x4s (learned from another KZbin Video). Then I used contact cement and staples for the carpet. I don't see having to replace them again, but it was kind of a pricey project. The resin alone was $70, then add $35 for stainless staples. The carpet was $50, around $200 total. If I have to do it again (I doubt it, but you never know), I'm just going to bite the bullet and get the composite boards: buy once, cry once. lol

Totally 💯 worth the money to get it done and then I put carpet on it soon after haven’t had any problem love the decision glad I did it.

Hey Daryl , I read your comments about the price to redo your boat bunks, well I found and alternative to that costly resin, Try using " Minwax brand " Helmsman " spar urethane, it goes on like water, cures in about 2 hours and only cost $30 dollars for a quart can, I have done 3 different trailers, my bass boat, my jon boat and my jet ski trailer and I still have some left and it sealed the wood just like fiber resin at half the cost, I even left my test board in my pool over night to see if this stuff works and it did, totally sealed the boards !!!

I have had no problems out of my boards on my trailer. I do have her recommend drilling the holes prior to rhino lining your boards and carpeting them still after you rhino line. Just to make sure they do not scratch the bottom of the boat. Thanks for watching.

Glad to hear you ended up carpeting the bunks later. Bare boards are way too harsh on the gelcoat.

Yes I agree that’s why I made the decision to go back and do it but the boards have been holding up wonderfully.

I just decided to do this to my boat trailer and i bought pressure treated wood and I started looking for ideas and everybody says I shouldn't ofused pressure treated because I have an aluminum boat so I'm hopeing if I use the rhino liner it will fix my problem seeing I already cut them to size thanks for the video exactly what I was looking for and if you got any ideas about my problem that wood be helpful lol couldn't pass on the wood joke

similar to tuff bunk, i definitely think they apply more coating as you could see the grains and knots in the wood, their process also fills in those gaps and than they sand it smooth and also do things like curve the edges so it doesn't hit straight edges. composite boards have too much flex in my opinion, dont look too sturdy. im doing pressure treated boards with a good amount of flex seal rubberized coating than im applying carpet up top. you need to start off with a good quality carpet and just be prepared to spend 100 bucks every other year on the stuff but you look like your boat gets loaded with the trailer submerged so i would imagine that would keep the carpet from burning the gel coat.
@FishingWithCotton

It was good and you have a good point and I also thought of that too so after I did this video I did go back and put carpet on the them so make it safe then not doing so just to be on the safe side. Thanks for watching.

Is this real Rhino Liner? I ask because Rhino Liner is non skid made to hold stuff from slipping.
@FishingWithCotton
@FishingWithCotton 4 жыл бұрын
Yes this is a good question, rhino liner actually gets a little slick when it is wet now when it is dry it grips very strong. My previous truck I had I had it sprayed on and that’s how I know.
@stu0cool
@stu0cool 4 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you are trying to accomplish. The carpet on the bunks protects the boat and provides a cushion between hard boards and the gelcoat. I don't think the rhino lining will provide that cushion. I think you are going to end up scratching your gelcoat surface. I guess time will tell.
@FishingWithCotton
@FishingWithCotton 4 жыл бұрын
The boards I had on the trailer rot and had fungus on them I was trying to Come up with a new way in counteracting this. Like you said only time will tell but as of now it works good.
@Leebr1966
@Leebr1966 4 жыл бұрын
The carpet doesn’t provide any cushion after the boat has been loaded a few times. Most times the carpet will be smashed so tight it’s hard to tell if it’s solid plastics or carpet. I would NOT unhook this boat backing down the ramp. I would also get into a habit of submerging the trailer before loading the boat in Texas-heat. Try to cool those bunks before loading. It’s been our experience that rino material will not last Ling on that wood. Good luck sir.

Tuff Bunks and Gatorbak work the same way as this guy is doing it.... If this works, this guy is a genius.. and has balls! lol not sure I would try it on my 65K bass boat.. but here I am watching

I was also thinking the same thing but I wanted something that still grips at the same time when driving down the road. This is a testing phase so who knows what would be the best option. Definitely want to share my idea because the traditional way is not good.

DO NOT DO THIS..Simple fact carpeted boards are designed to take all the damage bc its ez to replace now instead your boat is going to end up with bruised gelcoat from riding on lumber instead of cushion during transport.. i already saw black scuffs from 1 loading.. ive seen people do this at the marina i worked at and a year later we were having to do bottom job on the boat 3-5k$ instead of 100$ every 2-3 years for some carpet and staples..
@FishingWithCotton

Thank you for your post I appreciate you commenting and watching the video. To be on the safe side I did carpet my boards after this video. I do recommend carpeting still after you seal it with rhino lining that way it does protect the boat and by sealing the boards possible future damages.

You are brave but I still think carpet over the boards is the best most proven way, but someone has to invent better ways to accomplish things.

Sorry buddy…you did this all wrong….. I own polyurea company ( same as rhino liner ) and you did few things wrong You should have drilled your holes first and counter sink your carriage bolts First before you have the wood sprayed…this way the coating material is over Your bolts and you don’t penetrate the coating and have to rely on a caulk sealer to protect Your wood…..also I always use pressure treated wood..other then that I agree with your concept.. I have been doing all my trailer bunks and wave runner trailer bunks for over 20 years… I also prefer to use a lighter color other then black…I use tan color….
@FishingWithCotton
@FishingWithCotton 2 жыл бұрын
You’re right on that, I should’ve drilled the holes first didn’t think about that but that’s the only place that water will probably get in. Although for the most part it’s pretty protected happy with the project definitely a first for me thanks for watching.
