An enactment of the play Rhinoceros, written by Eugene Ionesco and translated into English by Derek Prouse.
A provincial French town looses it's sleep and peace as it starts sighting rhinoceroses galloping through the streets. As the sightings and discussions increase, more rhinoceros are seen galloping and creating havoc in town. What really shakes the people with fear is the discovery that it was the townsfolk themselves who were turning into these rhinoceroses. But the only person who does not bother to succumb to fear and chaos is Bertha.
This play in all stark essences capture Bertha's transformation from an irresponsible alcoholic to the saviour of humanity. The epidemic of rhinoceritis serves as a convenient representation for the mass uprisings of nazism and fascism before and during World War ll.
Ionesco wrote this play not only to criticize the horrors of such movements but also to explore the mentality of people who admired them. People in fact celebrated the fascist movements when they should have recognized the dangers concealed within. The play indirectly draws parallel to our current political scenarios as well.
