I grew up in the 80's, when this kind of music ruled. Everything was so huge - the sound, the guitars, drums, lights and the stage shows. Rock was larger than life - if you picked up an instrument you dreamed of being a rock star. Even if you didn't aspire to be one, the music always made you feel like one. When you went to the mall, music stores buzzed with excitement, and played rock! I remember wandering into any record store when I was 10 years old, and would always get chills by the the latest music that was being played LOUD - the sound of a heavy rock guitar riff that made me want to jump six feet in the air.

To paraphrase, I, too, grew up in the '80s. In my opinion, even though it was pioneered by Kiss and Alice Cooper, the '80s "carried on the tradition of the concert spectacle." Who could forget the rock/metal magazines: Metal Edge, Hit Parader, Circus, Hit Parader's Heavy Metal Hot Shots, and the mini magazine: HIt Parader's Heavy Metal Heroes, and from England: Metal Hammer. In my opinion, '80s WERE, and ALWAYS WILL BE, the "PINNACLE OF CIVILIZATION!"

Seriously. Nirvana, Alice in chains, pearl jam,... Did not like ANY of them. Now that I think about it I think that's one of the big reasons I never got into that crap is because it ushered in something that was just straight up depressing and I just personally never liked. Everything was always sad and gray and gloomy, but I guess if that's all you knew being from Seattle then so be it. Crazy how pretty much every one of those kind of bands had something wrong with some kind of drug abuse, addiction, or suicide, and these guys are still out there killin' it.

Well it is hard to make a cover which sounds original when you are covering 80’s songs because they all sound amazing and there is really nothing you can do to make them better. It is not like covering songs from the 60’s or 70’s which you can give a spin on as they were pretty bare bones for a lot of them. For example it worked when 80’s bands covered old stuff because they cleaned them up and improved old songs such as Quiet Riot with Cum on feel the noize, Britny fox with Hair of the dog, Kiss with god gave rock and roll to you II, Mötley crüe with Smoking in the boys room and Guns n roses with knockin on heavens door.

As a person who was slightly younger than you are when this song came out, yes, I see what you mean. However, there was still a lot of bad, just like any other time. You didn't have cell phones. I didn't have one until 1997 or so. We used pagers. Why? Because a cell call was 1.00 a minute, when you might have made about 5.75 an hour. A tank of gas around 1990 was about 20 bucks. On a big car (I had an 81 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme), you'd give them 20 and get a few bucks back from dead empty. In a major city. Smaller towns were cheaper, but you couldn't rely on the quality of gas. If it sits it can make the car noisy or smelly (exhaust). Kids were big on FM radio. Songs I heard a LOT of are "Steppin' Out" Joe Jackson "Separate Ways" Journey "Oh, Sherry" Steve Perry (sang for Journey) "Round n Round" Ratt "Here I go again"-Whitesnake It strikes me as odd that the girl in the Whitesnake videos is dead now and she's only a bit older than me. We hung out at the malls a lot. It wasn't a big thing to drive as a young teen (16, tho lots of kids learned early on farms at 12 or much earlier). But taking a bus or train was pretty safe in most areas. Cars were made extremely solid. My mother had one in the Olds, and there was one dent, while the other guy's car was totaled. There was still lead in gasoline up until around 1980. The Blues Brothers mentioned it in the movie. That was a big movie for Chicago kids, as well as 16 Candles and the Breakfast club. They made little rubber band bracelets in different colors that were big, as was Swatch (watch) and Benneton clothing. There was quite a bit of neon colors and purple. Jordache jeans and Gloria Vanderbilt. Reebok high tops like Jane Fonda wore in workout videos. Also Nikes, but they look different than now. Steve Perry had some in a live Journey video... Sounds: expensive keyboards were big. Yamaha made a DX-7. It was ubiquitous in those 80s movies. Mad Max. Trading Places. Electronic drums were needed and VERY VERY expensive. The early Simmons ones you see in Total Eclipse of the Heart were probably 4 THOUSAND dollars back then! Nobody used their cymbals, b/c they were AWFUL. Some used a Linn drum.machine, too. They used acoustic cymbals. Which were much better up until fairly recently. Now, you'll get a very good cymbal sound, but the Roland v-drum set can be as much as 7 thousand dollars! They make smaller ones, but I still prefer acoustic. If you get a chance to learn music, DO IT. Most of us up here wish we did. Girls also like musicians and it keeps you out of trouble. It'll be easier to learn as you're young. Encyclopedia Brown, Choose Your Own Adventure and Sweet Valley High books were all big. .Atari of course. But I much preferred the ColecoVision. Much better graphics. 8 bit! Lol Spencer's gifts was big at the mall. Bookstores. We used to drive around with kids on the hood of the car on the mall rood. Literally hanging on by our fingertips! Nobody ever got hurt, tho. I knew a kid who used to jump off the garage. Don't do it. You mess up your back now, and it'll haunt you forever. Trust us stupid old people (way too young to be boomers, tho). TV. MTV was new in 1980. It. Was. HUGE. I can't even tell you. Actual music videos 24/7. 1st song was a horrible tune called...Video Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles. Pink Floyd the wall was also huge. The movie as well as the song/video. If you get a chance to see The Wall show, DO IT. Def Leppard. Motley Crue. Btw, Roderick's band "Loded Diper" in Wimpy Kid books was from those bands. We recorded from cassette tapes. CDs were out, but 1 disc was like 4 hours of work. About 20 bucks. A tape was about 7 or 8 bucks. 1st CD I bought was Black Sabbath hits. It was 5.00 in the bargain bin. Record Stores were big. Tower Records. Peaches. You had to go THERE to buy tickets or call and the line was always busy. People waited overnight and it was actually fairly safe. I never heard of anyone stealing or molesting anyone that way. People worked out in health clubs. Jane Fonda was a poster child. So was Suzanne Somers (3's Company). Benny Hill was big. M*A*S*H was huge. Bob Newhart show. All in the Family. Cheers. The Cosby show. Different Strokes. Facts of Life. Married with Children. Lots of cartoon reruns. Like Pepe LePew. Which was my favorite and it was extremely old THEN! Like 1950! Or more. Oh, Toto was huge. Africa. Wow. When that was NEW. The band is full of studio players. Many are dead now. Legendary drummer Jeff Porcaro died of a cocaine overdose/damage to his heart from using cocaine. So, never, EVER do drugs. If someone suggests it, it's time to go. Just trust us on that. Cocaine doesn't have a "safe" amount. It can kill you at any time at any amount. Even the first use. A lot of people did pot and drank, but it wasn't so strong as it is now. You never know what ELSE someone will put in it to addict you on purpose, so don't go there (fentanyl). Learn how to fix everything yourself. Asap. Nothing more useful than your own tools and knowing how to use them. It's all online. Just make sure the person is reputable first. Not just some celebrity. I remember very early computers when a jpeg via email was a HUGE mess to do. I remember thinking, "This'll never take off..."

Dunno where some of these people grew up. But, where I'm from we blasted these songs through pioneer speakers and burned a shit load of gas cruising the streets. We didn't have a care in the world about anything. I'm sure in some areas it was different. But, in middle America we had a blast.

Actually, hard rock killed itself, with the help of record execs looking for the next band that sounded like _________(insert any top band here). They signed so many generic sounding bands, it flooded the market and watered it down. People got tired of it. I know I did. I lived it. I have come back now though to loving this music again.
@WreakingHavoc17 жыл бұрын
+AngelofAnguish I wouldn't say Cobain or any of the grunge bands killed it. Nevermind is a great fucking rock album. It's just a different style, but I can appreciate it for what it is. Of course I still love the 80's metal bands, but you have to admit the 90's produced a lot of good music also. Both the 80's and 90's are far superior to today's music. As for what happened to rock, I've heard people claim it was the internet and the loss of royalties making it less appealing for people to spend thousands of hours mastering the electric guitar. It was most likely multiple causes for the decline of 80's rock. Don't know if it will ever reemerge, but I hope it will one day.
@AngelofAnguish7 жыл бұрын
I "hear" you! The thing that I find ironic or interesting is that if (modern) bands like Rage Against The Machine, Marilyn Manson, Slipnot, Pearl Jam, Melvins, and Green Day, and supposed to be the "future" of rock/metal, how come or why do they take SO LONG to put out new music-despite using modern or "cutting edge" technology? Not that I care, because I DON'T (to be HONEST, I wish they'd ALL GO AWAY!) but, "(just) out of curiosity." I mean, I go to amazon(.com) and a local music store, here in Seattle, called, "Silver Platters," and I see new music from ("old school"-ers like) Accept, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Scorpions, and Iron Maiden, to name a few. Not only THAT, A LOT of the "old school"-ers are STILL performing concerts (which I, proudly, "salute")! But, WHERE ARE the modern bands?!
