My Father passed away last night. These guys were his favourite, it was the soundtrack to my childhood. I'm playing this song in particular at his funeral. I don't even know why I'm writing this. This song is just so good and fitting for the man that raised me Edit: thank you all for your lovely comments, they mean a lot. We played this as my Fathers casket exited the building. It was a lovely day

The levellers are the sound track to my life. I saw them first in 1989 but was truly smitten on a long van ride in the early 90's, thanks to wilson and chuff and a stereo and a tape of Weapon Called the Word and Levelling the land. I am now staring 50 in the face and I can still say that One Way and levelling the land are my favourite song and album of all time. Even now, if the ipod on shuffle throws up a levellers track, I find myself shouting along in the van. If you haven't seen them live then you have to do so; it's what they do best, Long Live the Levellers. It's the track for my funeral ....

The guy scrawling the anarchy symbol on the wall at 2:09 is my dad's mate Andrew. They were squatting in Brixton at the time, and I have no idea why he's in this video. He might have known one of the camera guys? Not fully sure. Really nice bloke though, and it's always great coming back to this video to see him as well as hear the song!
@ag-j660010 ай бұрын
Thats me! I was the (unofficial) art director and when filming had finished they realised they'd had forgotten to film that bit, so I did it. It did come quite naturally. I was one of the camera guys as well (the super 8 bits) and had a hand in all parts of the video apart from the editing. We both knew the Levellers pretty well and I organised them to play a fundraiser for the Advisory Service for Squatters collective. whos your dad? nice to know Im appreciated still

I lived in Brighton in 1991/92. These guys were huge there at the time. I bought A Weapon Called The Word, and then Levelling The Land when it came out. I also saw them play a couple of times and met them briefly once at a Pizza place. Then I came back to Australia and all my friends were going on about some band I'd never heared of called Nirvana. I told them the Levellers were much bigger where I had been living and that they were better. I still believe that and I still listen to those albums on a regular basis. I've never owned anything by Nirvana (although I think they're ok). This is a song I Iive by and as others have said here already, when this world freak show ends it will be my funeral song.

There's only one way of life And that's your own My father when I was younger Took me up on to the hill That looked down on the city smog Above the factory spill He said this is where I come When I want to be free Well he never was in his lifetime But these words stuck with me I ran from all of this And I climbed that highest hill And looked down on my life Above the factory spill I looked down onto my life As the family disgrace Then to all my friends on the starting line Their wages off to chase and all my friends and all their jobs And all the bloody waste I grew up, learned to love and laugh Circled A's on the underpass But the noise we thought would never stop Died a death as the punks grew up And we choked on our dreams We wrestled with our fears Running through the heartless concrete streets Chasing our ideas And the problems of the world Won't be solved by this guitar And they won't stop coming either By the life I've had so far And the bright lights of my home town Won't be getting any dimmer Though their calling has receded now Like some old distant singer And they don't seem so appealing To the eyes of this poor sinner I grew up, learned to love and laugh Circled A's on the underpass But the noise we thought would never stop Died a death as the punks grew up And we choked on our dreams We wrestled with our fears Running through the heartless concrete streets Chasing our ideas.
