The phrase "Big in Japan" from the 1984 song by the band Alphaville refers to the idea of being famous or successful in a distant or foreign place, especially in Japan, while remaining unknown or struggling elsewhere. In the context of the song, it symbolizes escaping reality and fantasizing about success or a better life in a faraway place. Japan was chosen because, during the 1980s, many Western artists and bands who didn't achieve mainstream success at home were surprisingly popular in Japan. The song itself is more about yearning for a better future and dealing with personal struggles (such as love and addiction), using the notion of being "Big in Japan" as a metaphor for an idealized escape or sense of hope. In Portuguese it's similar to the saying, "Santo de casa não faz milagre", or "Home grown saints don't work miracles".

Because actual talent made it big because more people voted to spend actual money for the records based on actually liking them than voted for a puerile TV entertainment show because they were sucked in by the hype and fomo? Just guessing, I could only afford to buy one or maybe two singles per week in the 80's, but voting a few pennies while sitting on my ass using my phone appears easier nowadays. I don't bother doing it, never have, but it still has the appeal of being simple and inexpensive. BTW I still have all the records I bought and a record player so i can listen to any of the music I originally thought was worthwhile. About 5% of it gets ignored, the rest gets a listen at least once a year, much more for some great songs! I feel like I got value for what I spent back in the day. Personally I would rather be able to still listen to the media I bought for as long as i like than have a stream removed because some beancounter exec decides it isn't making enough revenue. I grew up being able to do that and simply don't like companies taking away what I paid for because they already got my money and don't care if I get value or not so long as they get their profit.

fun fact: when this came out, the singer Marian Gold was still working as cooks mate in his hometown in Germany. it got a lot of radio airplay and so one of the cooks said: "son, they are playing your song all day long" and fired him. so the singer was fired because his boss didn't want him to waste his career peeling potatoes

What’s even crazier, and possibly very inspiring/motivating for aspiring musicians, is that none of them knew how to play any instruments; and yet, they still managed to produce such great music. With technology of the times (synthesizers, drum/rhythm machines, etc), they were able to turn the music they had in their heads into reality, without any knowledge of playing instruments…a magical time. Nowadays, it’s even easier…but you still need the talent/creativity to produce magic like this.

@@marvinsilverman4394 It really was! In high school, I had a synthpop band with some friends. I wrote a song about a New Wave girl called "(She's Living A) Plastic Life" and within a couple years, it had gotten lots of airplay on the the local college radio station. 30 years later, when we started Heroineburgh, I rewrote the lyrics, and it became our theme song, "(She's Living In) Heroineburgh". Every episode of ours is named after a song or artist from the 80s. So, yes, it was quite an inspirational 'era of plastic' (and I would add many more groups to the list, such as Gary Numan, Yaz, Howard Jones, Human League, Cabaret Voltaire and Front 242).

This song is about a heroin-addicted couple at Berlin Zoo-Station dreaming about what life could be - far far away - without their addicition. Thats actually what "Big in Japan" originally meant (its the name of a british band): When you are a loser or an outcast you might be able to have a good life in a place far away. This song makes me feel strongly hurt for the many addicted people all over the world who want to have a decent life but just can't break free :'( Great song and rightfully an 80's classic.

Winter's cityside Crystal bits of snowflakes All around my head and in the wind I had no illusions That I'd ever find a glimpse Of summer's heatwaves in your eyes You did what you did to me Now it's history, I see Here's my comeback on the road again Things will happen while they can I will wait here for my man tonight It's easy when you're big in Japan Chorus: Aah when you're big in Japan-tonight... Big in Japan-be-tight... Big in Japan...ooh the eastern sea's so blue Big in Japan-alright Pay! - Then I'll sleep by your side Things are easy when you're big in Japan Oh when you're big in Japan Neon on my naked skin, passing silhouettes Of strange illuminated mannequins Shall I stay here at the zoo Or should I go and change my point of view For other ugly scenes You did what you did to me Now it's history I see Things will happen while they can I will wait here for my man tonight It's easy when you're big in Japan Chorus (2x) Oh when you're big in Japan Chorus (2x) Oh when you're big in Japan

+Mara Iapoce I blame radio and tv stations for that, things have become sanitized, computer playlists, no DJs anymore, etc. No room for new music to come in. DJs used to go to clubs and concerts and brought the new music they liked back to the airwaves during their shows. I remember one DJ in Ottawa who decided one night to listen to the new Jethro Tull album, so he played the whole thing on air from start to finish. Others I saw at dance clubs when small unknown bands were visiting from other cities. Meanwhile Adam Curry and others on MTV used to bring in new bands, played music videos... It's sad how much things have changed.
