I loved this video and appreciate your focus was on their care needs. My new collection is growing. Please go through your collection slowly plant by plant with their labels clearly shown. Knowing which ones are which is so interesting when one is just starting out. It would also be good to see a detailed video on how you use them to style in an indoor setting.

Getting rid of the oxalis: basically, you can't 😁but what I usually do is tip the whole plant out of the pot and grab the oxalis by the root, then you are more successful in removing it, otherwise, there will always be some root that stays behind and makes another plant. Those roots seem to be specially designed to break off at a place that will allow them to grow a new plant again. By the way, what a beautiful collection you have and thank for the useful tips.

I just bought 3 new rhips and up to 5 total so far and love the hanging plants for my pergola hanging basket garden! Do you have R. horrida? I love the tails!!! Hi James, these are all outside right now under the pergola and in the yard, but they are many of the same plants that are in my Rhipsalis closet during the cold months. I’ve adopted a “few” more. I don’t have R. horrida, it isn’t difficult to find in the US, but the specimen I had purchased ended up being mislabeled and is R. pilocarpa. I’m in Duluth Minnesota 4b. Thanks! 💚🌱

Are rhipsalis widely hybridized like epiphyllum? They're already pretty difficult to identify in some cases and I'm wondering if hybridization leads to more confusion. Once again thank you for your information. Do you have any other good resources on KZbin or otherwise about epiphytic cacti? I'm a big fan of desert plants of Avalon and referred her to your Channel! He's very sweet and wonderful about replying to questions! By the way I'm new to your Channel and you've been wonderful about answering all my questions

Thank you 💚🌱. They can be hybridized but they aren’t anywhere near as widely hybridized as their showy flowered cousins. When it comes to identification, species are usually more identifiable. If you watch some of the species videos for other epiphytic cacti genus like Schlumbergera or Disocactus which have been widely hybridized you will see how the species are usually much easier to identify than their hybrids would be. For informational resources: Favorite Sites: www.schlumbergera.net epig.org rhipsalis.com cactus-epiphytes.eu/z_index.htm Favorite KZbin Channels: kzbin.info (amazing channel) kzbin.info (while this is all about dragon fruit, Hylocereus are epiphytic cacti and he has some wonderful information that applies to other epiphytic cacti genus) Facebook groups, there are MANY Facebook groups my favorite is the EPIG group: facebook.com/groups/174005199466279/?ref=share, I like this group because it welcomes posts about all epiphytic cacti and usually the posters are varried with some highly experienced in growing, hybridizing, or species. Other channels not specific to epiphytic cacti but they do have videos about them: kzbin.info (quite a few epiphytic cacti videos, beautiful photography) kzbin.info (a hobbyist not specifically epiphytic cacti however she does videos on them sometimes) kzbin.info (a hobbyist not specifically epiphytic cacti but she does videos on them sometimes) kzbin.info (does videos on epiphytic cacti sometimes, her 365 day series had some nice epiphytic species spotlights)

How do you water when planting cuttings? Maybe just mist the top of the soil? Also, after they root, do you separate the multiple cuttings in a single pot or leave them like that?
@EpiphyticCacti
@EpiphyticCacti Жыл бұрын
I like to root outside when possible and let nature do it’s thing. I will put them in a nice shaded area unprotected from rain. Thinner branching rhipsalis tend to want to be more moist for rooting - moist bit wet. Thicker ones it’s best to water sparingly until established. If the pot is big enough I leave them together, plus the pot will look fuller when they mature.

I’ve had my Pacheco leonis (sold to me as Paradoxa minima) for half a year now and still can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. I’ve experimented with the watering schedule and lighting conditions but the ends of the stem continue to turn yellow, brown up, and eventually dry up and die. Sometimes it’ll kill the whole stem. Sometimes it’ll stop midway. Any ideas on what could be wrong? Thank you for your informative videos btw! Not much thorough info on these guys for some reason, they’re beautiful plants!
@EpiphyticCacti
@EpiphyticCacti Жыл бұрын
Hmmm 🤔, yellowing from the tip up is unusual, I’ve only experienced this type of thing when a plant is naturally shedding older growth or it needs to dieback because it’s roots can’t support it. Tell me as much as you can. Substrate? Rooting cuttings or established plant? Do you spray with anything? Fertilize? Approximate geographic location? Indoors or out? Thank you for the kind words on the videos, it’s nice to know you enjoy them and find them useful 💚🌱!

@@EpiphyticCacti thank you for getting back to me! Im located in SoCal so average humidity is 50%. The plant is indoors in my north facing window + filtered light from a grow light. Im not too sure but I think they’re just rooted cuttings, I’ve been too scared to rummage thru it to check on its roots. But the substrate is very airy and well draining with rocks, perlite, and some bark it looks like. It’s in a very small plastic pot. I don’t use any fertilizer on it. I find it difficult to know when to water it since the stems always feel firm. I gave it a heavy watering recently which has started the browning of one of the stems and rotting up pretty quickly. Not sure if this is overwatering since it’s last watering was more than a week ago. I thought this was a good watering schedule for the past few months since it was doing well, in comparison to when I would water it more often the stems would also die. Not sure how I can send you a photo, but let me know if you’d like to see! I’m down to the last few stems of this plant and really want to save it :( Thank you!
@EpiphyticCacti
@EpiphyticCacti Жыл бұрын
Feel free to email me photos at epiphyticcacti@gmail.com. I would move it outside into a nice shaded are if possible and either lightly water once a week or let it be if it rains, outside they pretty much take care of themselves. If you can’t move it outside, move it to a window that provides it with more light. North is too shaded. Water very lightly once every 2 weeks, until is established. You will know it is developing roots when you give the cuttings a light tug and they resist. You will know it is established when it starts to grow, you can’t water it normally until it starts to grow. It would also help it to have some air movement around it, so if you can crack or open the window you put it in that will help it.

@EpiphyticCacti
@EpiphyticCacti Жыл бұрын
While you can put them in water and they will be ok for a while, they do better in an epiphytic mix. Some people like to root in water. Technically when you put them in water until they form roots and then put them in a dry media, most if not all those roots that developed in water die and new roots form in the dry media. What putting them in water is good for is if you have a desiccated cutting, it will plump it back up and give it a better shot at living long enough to form new roots in a dry media.

Most of my rhipsalis collection is gone. About a dozen plants went kama kazi. They were all fine for years, then the third year or so, they decided to go belly-up. The flat-leaf varieties uprooted themselves and deposited their sections on the shelf. So sad. The chunkier-leafed plants like Paradoxa and Sulcata are fine. What happened? I didn't change how I cared for them. I'm at a total loss.
@EpiphyticCacti
@EpiphyticCacti 8 ай бұрын
I’m sorry to hear that, unfortunately there isn’t much information to go on. I suspect whatever happened though was environmental because it happened to several. It seems like maybe a pest, mites can do that and I doubt they would have impacted thicker branching species in the same way. Other issues of course would be overwatering, over fertilizing, heat, cold. etc. If they were old enough and went without being potted up for long enough it is possible they were getting too dry and eventually a completely normal watering could have potentially rotted the roots. Again thicker branching species would be able to tolerate being dryer for longer.

Hi Kevin, I don’t spray, when I get mysterious rust colored patches. What I do is try to keep them a bit drier and move them into higher light. You can try some sprays like copper fungicide or a systemic fungicide, however be careful to test those a bit on a single plant you care a bit less about or a small area of a plant. Always do a small test before you try any new treatments! 💚🌱

@EpiphyticCacti
@EpiphyticCacti Жыл бұрын
Hi there, Rhipsalis russellii is the correct name although it’s pretty rare. If you are looking for it, I would suggest doing an ISO (in search of) post on Facebook in Rhipsalis groups. It’s always very difficult to find a commercial source for this species. At least on Facebook you can see pictures to know with some certainty it is correct. In terms of knowledge - I know it has very small blooms in comparison to the other larger flat clade Rhipsalis, it will produce pretty large clusters of those small blooms from the areoles instead of singular blooms. Light purple-pink clusters of berries follow the blooms. As an aside, I also think it is harder to bloom than many of the other Rhipsalis species.

@EpiphyticCacti I passed up really good buys on this 3 times because I wasn't sure if it needed as high humidity as everything I've read about it says. 70% is high. I have a lot of other Rhipsalis that are gorgeous, and they get average humidity that fluctuates between about thirty and sixty percent year round in my sun room with my other plants. That's about the only reason I passed up on those good buys was because I wasn't sure about the humidity.
@EpiphyticCacti
@EpiphyticCacti Жыл бұрын
@@L-xj2xs that is unfortunate, I have yet to grow a any Rhipsalis that had to have humidity levels that exceed what can be provided in a standard home environment. I sometimes think one persons method of growing something gets passed along as THE method of growing something when in fact it can grow under many conditions. Sometimes we also tend to think that they have to have the exact conditions they do in nature to grow but that isn’t usually true either. I remember being told by several people the only way to grow Pseudorhipsalis amazonica was in a greenhouse because it needed very high humidity. I’ve grown it just fine as a houseplant with 30-60% humidity depending on the season for years. I’ve had that experience with a lot of plants. You never know what you can grow until you try it.
