It always amazed me how Valerie Harper had such a sustained, authentic New York City---Bronx--accent. It was stronger when she was Rhoda, on the MTM show, than on the Rhoda show. She was not a native New Yorker, as far as I know. She was a marvellous actress, and a wonderful person, according to so many people. I grew up watching V.H. on both sitcoms, starting when I was around 9 or 10 years old, and she was a real inspiration to me for many years.

But then again, I know from experience that you can have a relationship that can seem to be going good, and then suddenly it's over and you have no idea why it happened or what exactly you did wrong. Picture it: Rainbow wedding with 6 bridesmaids (pink, blue, green, yellow, aqua, lavender), full length Maypole dance outfits complete with white pinafores (essentially aprons) with the final insult being what can only be described as dunce caps for hats. I wore yellow which isn't always a good color for a blond, and I ended up walking down the aisle with Ichabod Crane, the 19-yr-old cousin of the groom, 6'9" and about 130 lbs. Poor kid! I volunteered to walk with him since no one else would even consider it. I was the old married lady of the group (22). Very funny now. Not so much at the time.

@@thesilentdiva From wikipedia - In the first episode of the third season during a particularly dramatic scene Joe leaves Rhoda and the two remain separated for the entire season, with Groh appearing in only nine of the season's episodes. A few weeks later, they mutually agree to see a marriage counselor where Joe reveals to a stunned Rhoda that he had never wanted to be married, and that he married her only because she had pressured him into it after he had invited her to live with him. Audiences were equally stunned and deserted the program in droves. Although the producers believed the plot development was essential, the fan response to Rhoda and Joe's separation was overwhelmingly negative and hostile. CBS was inundated with thousands of angry letters protesting the plot development, "Rhoda" and "Joe" received sympathy cards and letters of condolence, with Groh later reporting that he had received hate mail for as much as a year after the season had ended.

Fernie Jackson: I couldn't disagree more about "the chemistry" between Harper/Rhoda and Groh/Joe, and that's something I've never heard anyone say before. The Joe character was poorly conceived and written from the beginning and David Groh lacked charisma and the comedic acting skills to keep up with the likes of Valerie Harper, Nancy Walker, Julie Kavner and Harold Gould. P.S.: I'm not sure "broadspectered" is a even a word in English, but if you mean that you think David Groh had a wide range as an actor, could you give some evidence that you think supports that?

At that point, he & Rhoda were already separated but even he thought the separation was just temporary. Valerie Harper mentioned it in her book. In a committed relationship - a marriage, especially - I don't know many people who take a one time "I don't want you" to be the final word. There is too much at stake. I've seen marriages go through some rough patches where one spouse said they wanted out, but they were eventually able to work it out and stayed together. Your mom's advice would mean the end of a lot of marriages that might otherwise be saved.
@69Mucci Жыл бұрын

But she married him and loved him, and she assumed he still loved her... so of course you would want to try for at least a few months to work it out. I wish I had tried harder to save my marriage. Maybe we could have gotten through the rough patch and still been together... who knows. But if I had any advice to give to anyone who is married (based on my own experience and regrets) is do everything you can to save a marriage... before you walk away from each other forever. I mean, unless there is verbal or physical abuse... or infidelities. But if you are simply having some regular kind of issues, don't just give up so easily. Even if one side seems like they want that (and I guess I came across that way in my own marriage), you should try to do everything you can, so that at least you can walk away knowing you tried your best. So many marriages call it quits too easily. And mine was a perfect example of that. It's the only regret I have ever had in my life. And it's something you never truly get over.

I didn't like how much cast changes there was on this show over its run. Always coming and going.

How ironic. Julie Kavner had never worked or even met him at this point. But, a decade later would appear in quite a few projects by Woody Allen. He called her a natural comedian. Who would've thought, huh?

Well my question is why did the writers change the whole Rhoda storyline from pilot. They went back to her lifestyle with MTM. And actually watching this series years later, the characters are so negative especially about themselves. I lost interest once Joe was written out. It was great seeing Rhoda move happily forward then the writers did a 360. The character Rhoda deserved to be happy & fulfilled. 😮

It was the producers who broke them up, they felt the show was better without him. I think the producers tried and succeeded to ruin the show. They are the ones who wanted her character to act that way. Even on Mary Tyler Moore show they wanted her character portrayed with a low self esteem.

I wish I could do that! Just decide to hop a plane to Paris, and actually be able to do it. I'm with Brenda though... I wouldn't want to spend all that money just for a couple days. That would be like a tease, torture.. It would probably be better to not go at all than to just go for the weekend.. It would just leave you wanting more.

Emily Edwards I get what you're saying but I'd rather get a taste of Paris (or London, or wherever) than not see it at all. Besides, getting a glimpse would maybe inspire you to save for a real trip of a couple of weeks duration. I've been to Paris and would LOVE to go back. Same with London. Now, if I could only get to St. Petersburg (Russia, not Florida).

Rhoda was never dull! Joe was the dull one! She is a vivacious, fun, and always the most interesting woman you could ever meet! Rhoda, picked another loser and married him, poor choice as far as the writers are concerned. When he showed up at the airport with flowers for her, that was so ridiculous. He walks out on her and then comes in like gangbusters and is jealous because she is going to Paris and he tries to make her feel guilty because she may meet other men. Get over it Joe, while you are seeing other women!!! LOL!! I can't understand why she has to prove to him and validate her behavior to him. She never did it om the MTM show. Rhoda was Rhoda and that was it!!

Even for the 1970s, Rhoda must have saved alot of money even for a weekend trip to Paris. Brenda was using her sense, she couldn't afford it. Joe was just trying to control Rhoda concerning the trip. He thought the trip was all about him, and he looked awful with a mustache. I don't know why Rhoda never visited Mary.

Rhoda gave in too fast and too easily to Joe. She didn’t make him work for her. There was not thrill of the chase. Maybe that’s why he found her dull. But in general the writers could have done a better job with the character of Joe. Would have moved to see David Groh stay.

If you have to ask the questions Rhoda is asking to Joe in the beginning of your marriage it's not a good sign.
