Having most "good" ships removed makes it easier for WG to get money from people trying to get the ships through containers and such.

Removing ships creates scarcity, which is together with social proof the most potent instrument in marketing. If ships are available forever I can think about my purchase forever. And with the volume of new ships I probably wont make a decision as every week one of those OP ships is being released. So they time it out, I get FOMO or dont have time to think about it and buy. Same principle 50% discount but only for the next 2 hours or this webinar has only 2 places left or only 1 room available for this price. This is why ships are being withdrawn. That they are OP is the cherry on top. There is a softer version with ship lines which often are op and getting nerfed. So you pay to play as long as possible while the ship is op. Look at Libertard. WG is not dumb. They spend several millions per month on ads, they know what they are doing.
