This was all the result of a disgruntled former employee that lied about a cat dying there (never happened) and got the authorities involved. Should she have attained the proper permit? - Sure. But the town of Tiverton has also been making it very difficult for her with onerous demands too. It's not like these other shelters are sitting there with room to spare and anyone that has a clue about the terrible situations all of these shelters are trying to deal with knows that. The government can't figure out or won't say and so far has done nothing about what is flying over major metropolitan areas - but lets come down like a ton of bricks on a poor woman trying to help a situation that most people choose to remain ignorant about. She did need to follow procedure and there is a reason for it and that is for the safety and health of all the cats. I hope they do not give her a hard time when she wants to reopen. You can tell she truly loves the cats and understands her mistake she made. I am a cat lover and my cat is in my channel and I could understand why she did what she did. Hopefully, she will have stronger will power or have a note that states on their premise how a cat can stay in the Cat Cafe. I worked for a shelter for many years, and just because an animal is up for adoption, it doesn't mean it will be. Sadly, in the shelter that I worked in, space became an issue all too often, and we had to pick and choose which animal stayed up for adoption and which animal did not.

I’ve volunteered at shelters and worked at a midwest animal humane group. Knowing how some of those rescuers are (the animal rescue people who lord it over everyone with the way THEY would do things), I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that one of them reported this cat café to the authorities. The town could and should have handled this differently. These cat cafés allow potential adopters the opportunity to see kitty in a cage free setting instead of a shelter environment where they huddle in back of a cage, fearful and unfriendly. Lots of people don’t like going to shelters for that reason. If the shelter those cats were taken to is not a “no kill” shelter, that’s the end of more animals. As for this cat café? For god’s sake pay attention to your paperwork!!!!

I volunteer in cat rescue. This is SUCH a tough situation. The shelters and rescue groups are PERPETUALLY OVERFLOWING with animals and simply cannot handle taking any more. This last year is the worst I've seen in my life. All the places that used to immediately take in kittens found outdoors (i.e., they are too young to fend for themselves and are young enough to be easily adoptable) won't even do that anymore. If you find kittens, you're basically on your own. And that's not even touching on ALLLLL the abandoned adult cats who have been left behind or dumped. When the economy is struggling, one of the first expenses that people cut is caring for pets. And with so many people not even able to afford proper housing or groceries, pets become a luxury that many people can't manage. This means shelters are overflowing and more pets are being dumped or left behind when people move or are evicted - not because they want to, but because they don't have any other options because all the shelters are full. It's especially bad when those poor animals also haven't been spayed/neutered, so they end up producing litter after litter of kittens so the cycle of suf'fering continues. Please folks, support your local shelters and rescue groups: donate money, supplies, and more importantly your time or home by fostering. Having reliable foster homes that are successful at getting animals adopted out SAVES LIVES. There is no room in the shelters anymore and more animals can only be helped if there are foster homes to send them to 💜 Also, for the love of god, GET YOUR PETS SPAYED AND NEUTERED. IT SAVES LIVES.
