Just watched this video 10 minutes ago and tried it out on my 11 wk old, very bitey, Ridgeback. The closed hand, treat reward and the gentle mouth treat taking worked in just a few attempts. So easy….

My Loki is a RR/hound mix. He's 2-3/4 yrs old but we rescued him when he was 1-1/2. We were his 4th family. Along the way, I know he was abused and other families couldn't handle him. He's very smart and very stubborn. I've been taking him to training classes at the rescue where we found him. He gets overexcited easily and starts biting/tearing clothes. I'm hoping this video on biting will help me teach him control. I've learned a lot about Loki through your videos. Please keep making them!! I had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. lol

I just adopted a Rhodesian mix as well. I’m used to labs and hounds that are more submissive. The Yelp and ignore truck has been working well:

It's nice to see which way you go. Two years ago we took in a 24 week old male. Nobody showed him how far he can go. After the walk the jacket was broken or pants had a hole. Today we play as physically as you do, only he can put my arm in my mouth. He is extremely careful and only plays with me. He has a completely different way of playing with my wife. He has no interest in our 4-month-old daughter. He sniffs and leaves, that's completely ok for me. He is a great dog. Thank you for your beautiful videos, we always like to watch them. Greetings from Germany

I know it's an older video, but I wanted to thank you. Started watching your work prior to getting my girl, and don't have a dog already. I got her at 9 weeks, and 3 weeks in, YES she is so mouthy, I called her piranha too! I had to start swatting her on the flank because I couldn't get anything done, pet her or move without her attacking my hands and/or feet. I don't like doing that so it's still a work in progress. I must get her to puppy class, thank you for showing that.

Excellent info. Have always done many of these bite training techniques, but it's always good to see it from someone more experienced. Ridgebacks are definitely a more rowdy breed and play pretty rough. To an inexperienced dog owner, this can look like pretty aggressive. Keeping this in check is important. Thanks for these videos.

When you were playing with your dog, she wanted you to pretend mount her. So just put 2 hands on their very lower back. Scratch it or put light pressure on it. You have to act scared or daring/cautious, dip in and out like they do. They will let you win a dominance round and then vice versa & repeat. They will often run away and straight back for more and can do the same.

My Scarlet was one of these sharks lol. I played and yelped and ignored a lot to curb it. She just mouths now with no pressure if I stick my hand in her mouth. She also always apologizes when she mistakes my hand for a toy during playtime. Rhodies are such aggressive players with other ridgebacks lol. This video reminds me of why I need to get Scarlet a sibling to play with. Thx for the video!

Well, they are 100% biting their thumbs out of pain from the dew claw removal, the loss of part of the digit, then trying to grab things but you can't, and the muscle atrophy is incredibly painful.

My RR X Shar pei is 1 year old now, well behaved (around me) he has great recall in our yard but no recall when out in the open, when I take him to the doggy park on weekends he is great with other dogs but tends to pick on other dogs of a certain bred, like Rottweiler`s and Great Danes but loves playing with smaller dogs, not sure why but we have to leave the doggy park when one of those breeds come in, as he loses it completely, also he is trained not to jump up on visitor`s except one friend who visits , he refuses to listen to me , he also bites him on the hand when playing, is this because he can sense his fear or just doesnt like him? he jumps on the couch where my male friend is sitting and leans over him, pushing his whole body weight against his chest, I can call him off but he only goes back after awhile and does it again, I have no idea how to stop this behavior, doggy training was a fail as all he wanted to do was play with the other pups, so I trained him myself, he will sit, stay, role over, shake, in my back yard (quarter acre block) he will sit and stay until i release him but refuses to listen when I try it out the front, I bought a 6 ft long training lead and a no pull harness but nothing is working wahhh, can dogs have adhd because I think mine has it lol, Oh and he still tries to flea me haha

I need help! I have a 14 month old Rhodesian and I'm losing it. We started the choker chain training w/ a trainer. Covid hit and we stopped. She's out of control and I'm having a hard time getting motivated to start training again. What is the best type of training for her? She's jumping on everyone and about knocked people down. I'm getting discouraged and she's totally running my life and my schedule.
@MarkingOurTerritory4 жыл бұрын
Great that you're reaching out for help during such a difficult time. The best type of training is consistent, positive reinforcement training - couple with heavy doses of exercise. A teenage Ridgeback that isn't rigorously exercised is going to cause a ton of mischief. I'd suggest going back to the beginning, and setting out a specific daily plan to give her what she needs. That involves connecting with a trainer again and recommitting to patient, diligent and consistent work. Not easy, so make sure you find the help you need - good luck!

Thank you for this! A quick question: when we’re playing and the Ridgeback bites how long should I ignore her for? Should the play stop for a few hours? Or just until the puppy has become distracted? Thanks! (Currently nursing a very swollen ear complete with teeth marks)
@MarkingOurTerritory3 жыл бұрын
You should ignore her for as long as she continues to engage in behavior you want to discourage. So if she's still jumping, biting, pawing, etc, you don't engage. The moment she sits politely, or lays down, or does something else, you reengage with lots of love and affection. You want to reinforce that she gets the attention she wants not by biting you, but by pretty much doing anything else

Hi I have a ridgeback and he bites and fights with my friends puppy and has ever since they met? What should I do?
@MarkingOurTerritory4 жыл бұрын
Could be a whole host of different things, no one answer here. When introducing dogs, especially Ridgebacks, for the first time I always recommend you run the Ridgeback hard beforehand so they have less energy. Meet off-leash in a neutral area outside the home so neither of the dogs is inclined to feel territorial. Offer lots of treats and praise to both pups and supervise to see how things develop. It takes time.
@jackgriffiths96364 жыл бұрын

One must be Alpha 24/7 for their whole lives. like a drill SGT. One is always the boss, always being watched/tested and it is work to be consistent every interaction. Leading is tough, not everyone is a leader or a trainer, especially to their dog. Every pack demands leadership in its human, many humans are not up to pack standards. What do you see police and military K9 doing every day? Training/discipline. If one is having issues with dog, go look in mirror. Get training from professionals on how to be effective pack leader, problems usually solved forthwith. Like rearing a child, only how many feed, walk, ignore
