Hike with my guy all the time here in CT. He was literally born to hike, it’s his favorite thing in the world. Sometimes we do a bit of trail running also.

My ridgie was the best hiking companion I ever had. Always ready to go. I used a dremel on her nails.

Dude, you're right about their nails, and best to start frequently and routinely trimming them as puppies, or when they get older it can be a big challenge. Also, I noticed your guy still has his dew claws. If the dog goes for a lot of hikes, or running through modest vegetation, it's not uncommon that they could get snared on something, partially tear off, bleed and cause significant pain for them. It's best that breeders routinely have them removed at about 1 week of age to prevent that. From a long-time RR owner, regards from Pennsylvania

I had 6 Rhodies over the years, all aged out and gone now. A couple of them would get too far out in front of me, so I'd wait until they looked back, then provoke them by running away. They would go ballistic while I made my escape. I'd be hiding, and see them on a dead run, then slam on the brakes where I'd jumped off the trail. My boy Onion would be crying, he wanted to get me so bad. If I made him work, I'd get a couple of good natured bites when he caught me.

I have 2 female Ridgebacks and go hiking all the time with them. My one girl will literally pull me off the bike path to go into the woods....lol. She likes to dictate the direction we go in.

Interesting. 6-7 miles hike, you said. How about 15-25 miles a day, 3 days a week?

If they are conditioned enough. But that’s prob a lot. I’m just reflecting here from personal experiences! We are actually going on a 5k run today. He can handle that pretty well also at a good clip.

@@DriveandTime Thanks. I'm only talking hiking. Not running.

Stefan I had a ridgeback in tropics and he would walk three times a day 8-10 kilometres. Thirty kilometres per day. Obviously start slowly and build distance over time. My sons Mastiff could barely walk three hundred metres to beach. I had Rottweilers they would tire out in a kilometre or two . German shepherds lasted a bit longer. Only dog that came close to Ridgeback was a pair of Blue Heelers I owned once.
