Rhodium Plating Explained

Will the rhodium plating eventually wear off? Does rhodium plating on sterling silver make it less shiny and white as silver normally is ?

No it will shine even more like brand new jewelry

Sterling silver (like in jewelry) usually has copper in it (to make it more tough) and has has a slight yellow-ish hue because of it, especially apparent in matte, brushed or sandblasted finishes, almost champagne colored really. Rhodium plating silver jewelry is kind of standard on sterling silver and white gold just so it doesn't have any color tint and is more shiny over a long time. Pure silver is technically shinier when you polish it to a mirror finish, it does tarnish when exposed to air and acids though and scratches very easily. Pure gold keeps its color, but is also very soft.

If the pieces you are dealing with is something like rings or bracelets, the Rh layer will be wear off after some days, how fast it gets wear off depends on the Rh layer thickness and the layer roughness. Even the very hard and highly wear resistance layer like TiN or Tic (by vacuum plating), they will be wear off

I’m into vintage safety razors when things were built better. I’m looking into re-plating them in either Nickel or Gold/Rhodium. _Rhodium is so expensive now it’s like 10 times what gold is?!_

I hate rhodium plated jewelry. It wears off and you have to get it re-plated once or twice a year which is an expense that isn't needed at all.

It depends on mostly the Rh layer thickness and how you wear your jewelry. If you plate Rh for only few seconds (0.03um), yes it wear off very fast. But if you plate for min or longer, let's say 0.2um, it will be much more durable
