Hi ...I appreciate your video! I purchased a Rhododendron Purple x hybrid plant last year. I planted it in a sun/shady area in my backyard. This year it going good. I saw the flower buds getting ready to bloom, but the next day when I checked on my bush, some type of animal ate it and I was so furious. I have somewhat of a forest in my backyard, chipmunks, squirrels, beavers, raccoons, deers, rabbits, possums and the list go on and on...I love God's creatures but someone is attacking my Rhododendron. Now, the plant has brown spots on the leaves and it's not looking good. What can I do to treat this plant. Your video shows the beautiful blooms on this bush,,,but from this point, I don't think I'm going to be able to ever see a beautiful bloom. PLEASE HELP ME!! And by the way...I love Tennessee...I have many relatives that live in Tennessee...actually Memphis, Tenn. I remember I use to go their every summer when I was a kid and spend time with my relatives and I just love me some Tennessee...lol...Take care! God bless!..:-)

Thanks. After more googling, I believe, I dont get any flower buds, but leaf buds only. Any remedy for that?

Could be that your plants are not mature enough yet to produce flowers--more that a year or two old? Otherwise, I would suggest that you just keep working on the basics that we mentioned, such as rhododendron/azalea acid fertilizer, filtered sunlight, adequate moisture, and mulch, etc. Wish I could be more helpful. Keep us posted and let us know how things progress. Sometimes a gardener's greatest tool is patience, though knowledge and persistence are valuable also!!

Olá! O mesmo acontece com o meu pé dessa mesma planta. Porém tem apenas 2 anos. Fico torcendo para que seja esse o motivo. Fico ansiosa para ver o primeiro botão de flor .

Do I need to prune or dead head my small leaf rhododendron?
@GardenVoice7 жыл бұрын
After blooming is completed for the season, it is a good time to prune and shape your plants in order to encourage fullness of foliage and blossoms for the following season. Much like azaleas.

why is one of the branches on my rhode dying?

My Rhodies seem to have new buds immediately after the blooms finish. How can I prune in this case? Or, is it possible it is leave buds and how can I tell the difference? Thank you.
@GardenVoice4u6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it sounds like these new buds are the new foliage. Go ahead and prune as the blooms fade.

Thanks, Douglas Bishop. So when exactly do the flower buds emerge or start growing?

my buds dont flower anymore. why?

If your rhododendron plants produce flower buds that don't open, the plants may be in need of a renewal pruning to stimulate new growth. Or they may have depleted the soil of nutrients needed for the plant to flower. Rhododendrons (like azaleas) require acid soil, adequate moisture, and filtered sunlight for success. Try adding a rhododendron/azalea acid fertilizer, and mulch with decaying pine needles and oak leaves. For more information, please read our article "When Should I Cut Back My Rhododendrons?" in the Sharp Tips section of GardenVoice.com. You might also consult your local garden center or the agricultural extension agency for successful rhododendron cultivation in your area. Hope this helps.

My rhododendron is all woody and sparse. only 3 years old. Any advise to make it full ?
@GardenVoice4u5 жыл бұрын
Hi Monica. Yes, I would suggest a rather heavy pruning after this years blooms have faded. Pruning stimulates growth, and as the new growth emerges, your plants will take on a greater density. An application of azalea/rhododendron plant food and plenty of water should also be helpful. Good luck with all your gardening!

Never use lime on rhododendron it is very alkaline and will really harm it.
