The bagpipe is the oldest musical instrument in Bulgarian history. Of ancient Thrace - VI century BC to the present day this instrument has not undergone any changes. The bagpipe is an integral part of the Bulgarian folklore, as its presence is most pronounced in the Rhodopes and the Thracian folklore regions. Secrets for making bagpipes, and the ability to play it is transmitted by tradition from generation to generation, from father to son. Гайдата е най старият музикален инструмент в българската история. От древна Тракия - VI век преди Христа, до наши дни този инструмент не е претърпял никакви промени. Гайдата е неизменна част от българския фолклор, като нейното присъствие е най силно изразено в родопска и тракийска фолклорни области. Тайните за изработка на гайда, както и умението да се свири на нея се предава по традиция от поколение на поколение , от баща на син.

My admiration for this and all the bagpipe culture in Bulgaria is beyond words! Unfortunately, in my country, Romania, the comunist and post comunist era aniquilated almost completely the bagpipe tradition...only some, lonely, isolated sheppards in the Carpathians still practice on a "private basis" and, some in Dobrogea (but these are corrupted and "modernised"). I wish we had more enthusiastic students/scholars like you who would be interested in recollecting, processing and conservating this ancestral musical tresure of the Balkans. As far as I know, I'm the only cimpoi player in north america. It's so sad that so much of our tradition was lost to the communists. We literally have under 10 traditional songs left.

My heart beats wildly while listening the amazing sounds of Bulgarian bagpipe from Rhodope mountain, called kaba bagpipe (kaba gaida). The player Petar Janev is one of best kaba gaida players now a day, along with him plays his bigger son. Thank you for the clip, wonderful. :)

Macedonian l tell you that this is also very traditional regard at the highest levels of folk music. The Garda bagpipes in English is Macedonian to the bone. You are totally wrong. It is Rodopean. Meaning Bulgarian. Peter Yanev is one of the best pipers I've ever heard and the instrument is called Kaba Gaida beacuse of the softer sound. The smaller one that is typical for the Thracian region is Jira Gaida with higher tonality compared to this one. These people here and the music have nothing to do with Macedonian region.
