Amazing stuff that gave SO much ambiance to the movie. Francis incorporated music from The Doors, he went to UCLA film school with Jim Morrison, and The Dead in this film in a very organic and psychedelic way. This must have been a passion project for Mickey because he was so into what would latter be lumped together as "World Music". The creativity in these sessions must have been amazing with instruments invented on the spot and others pulled from all the regions of the Earth, and beyond. Namaste to The Rhythm Devils and the surviving members of The Dead and thanks so much for this post.

Oh, sweet Jesus, now this makes me feel so old :-) As an exchange student from Germany I saw the Rhythm Devils perform live at the University of Connecticut in 1981. They were the spark that made me dive into percussion music. Happy I never gave up my Vinyl collection! Though I have to admit that the recording is much less powerful than the Devils Performance on stage. Still, a great memory!

Not sure what went down between the vinyl and CD release of TANS, but they totally neutered "Hell's Bells." For starters, the original version of the track begins at 28:50. Then, that low electronic drone that fades in at 32:25 to take the forefront as its pulsing ultimately stills, goes a very rich and full one to two octaves below what you can hear here. The vinyl version has an ominous body and fullness to it that's been reduced to a whimper here. Really, it's a damn shame.

Okay thanks for the valuable information. For most folks will take what they can get, if I find a vinyl rip somewhere I'll replace my copy of it which is featured in this video. I love the film and the music.

That's what happens when you digitize what should remain analog.

The song Hell's Bells was not written by Brian Johnson, Angus Young, Malcolm Young! Wrong band, different song :) Great album, bought it when it first came out.

So please do tell, who wrote it? I agree it does not seem to bear any resemblance to the AC/DC song of the same name

@@SteveCournane Oinky made a joke. KZbin detected AC/DC's Hells Bells and cited it in the description. The song on this album was obviously written by one of musicians featured in the Rhythm Devils group. It's not a cover, just an observation of irony. KZbin is very "trigger sensitive".

If you like this album you will probably enjoy my album on Bandacmp, " Gems From The Electric Jewel Farm" by Michael James Weaver. It features a lot of percussion that was influenced by Mickey Hart and many other excellent percussionists.

this is a really important part of the whole project, it's really strange that coppola didn't do much talk about it, neither in interviews or in dvd-blu ray's extras , tkeyhere's at least 3 versions full of off scenes and documentaries ... well done mickey, great job

No kidding, I’ve watched and read all I could when I first discovered this movie in the 80’s, then poured over all the DVD and Blu-Ray extras and don’t recall seeing this recording mentioned. Jump ahead to 2022, and someone pops up on Antiques Roadshow with the painting used for the album cover.

I wonder why this wasn’t all included on the OST release? Would’ve made for a much better soundtrack, and an effective accompaniment to what’s mostly dialogue from the film.
@SPNKr164 жыл бұрын
Indeed, this is the scene to scene/atmosphere music that delivers you to each scene consecutively. Honestly, without the choice of music the film would be much more boring.

PBS aired a series on Viet Nam in late 79. Mickie Hart worked on the soundtrack for the series. I wonder if this was a result of the series.

This music is featured on the film. It's never been talked about. I even have the original soundtrack and the remaster. Well, I love the film - you could say.
