My experience playing Rock Band drums is pretty similar to what you are describing with your attempt at making your own rhythm game. Latency wasn't an issue because the only sounds in-game are the music, while my electronic drum kit has its' own separate audio output for the drum sounds. So I've played a LOT of Rock Band and Clone Hero, as well as another drum rhythm game you might not have heard of called Taiko No Tatsujin. It's based off of Japanese Taiko drumming, and only has 2 types of notes, the center (don) and the edge (ka). It's a lot of fun, and the drum parts get incredibly fast and rhythmically intricate. Here's a video of the game one of my favorite players just posted. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHXacnt3hrBgmZY

This was a pleasant surprise of a video; I make charts for Clone Hero and play it a lot. I was even considering if there was a way to automate creating a chart of your procedurally generated djent if I had access to a midi file or anything else that contains the note information. Writing an algorithm to translate the range of pitches to five frets might even be an interesting video concept lol. There's a lot of unofficial and nuanced rules about how to place notes so they make sense in the 5 fret context, but I haven't seen them written anywhere; it's something I picked up intuitively through charting. Also, the .chart file format is text based and wouldn't be very hard to work with for something like this, especially when there's a constant bpm.

@Etholux Yeah latency isn't an issue really in those types of games, due to their design. I always play with my drum sounds though, even though it doesn't always match that well with the song, it feels more like I'm actually playing the drums, if that makes sense. (: Haven't heard/seen that game, but it looks like fun!

@Geomitron That's awesome! I might try out a couple of your charts. : D Funny you'd mention that, I've actuall thought of trying to write a Clone Hero chart exporter for my program. Drums shouldn't be too hard, it's mostly the charting of the guitars that I'd be worried about. Feels like it would be fairly challenging to automatically make charts that makes sense on the guitar. I might attempt it in the future!

@@DennisMartenssonOfficial I've been playing for a while, so I mostly chart fairly difficult electronic stuff. But if you ever do attempt it, I'd be happy to explain how things work and answer any questions you have. (I have the link to the .chart file format specification, for example)

Funny as I was talking to some people to chart your stuff into Clone Hero in order to promote your work to the community, then I found this video. While the simulation of guitar is already represented on Rocksmith, drummers are still looking for a one-stop software to simulate drums. Drums on Clone Hero is already sophisticated with 4-4-1 (cymbal-snare-kick) formation, but for some other drummers, they definitely want more options than just the said formation...

Funny thing is for whatever random reason, I was watching some modern videos of amazing feats accomplished in Clone Hero literally just a few days ago. There's still quite an active community of players really tearing into some of these really difficult songs, and more experimental songs and modifications are being added to them all of the time. It's really quite amazing =)

I wrote some papers in music college regarding music education and games and most of them don't teach music beyond the muscle memory: the visual representation of the notes aren't useful outside of the game. I wanted to learn sight reading, but couldn't find a game interesting to play and learn. So I quit college - lol - and went to game dev... now, almost 4 years later, I am developing a game where you can plug your midi device, play the game with actual sheet music and not be bored. I'm developing it to be a game with story mode ( to teach sheet music, with bosses and everything ) but a mode where you could just plug your instrument, throw in a MIDI file with a playback and play it sounds very interesting, especially for musicians.

@@DennisMartenssonOfficial I think I commented on a video prior about this exact thing, you got another supporter on the idea! I'm imagining just feeding it model settings that you export and then just generating a specific duration of audio with a given chart for it, if not getting official support in Clone Hero itself for using such a feature if you build a shared library out of it that they can call and redistribute

I still play rock band 4 for drums, love the engine, you need a really dumb adapter to play with an e-kit though, last time I checked I think they were going for 60 trillion dollars second-hand. 6-fret (GH live) on Clone hero is also super fun, the community data mined all the limited-time charts and videos to keep 6-fret alive after Activision axed support for all the online features. Gunna give rocksmith plus a go when it comes out, a subscription service is a hard sell for me though. Might end up seeing if custom chart quality has improved for RS 2014 instead.
@Etholux

I managed to snag one of those adapters before it shot up in price. Even so, I still prefer to play Clone Hero because of the freedom you have to tweak things like timing windows and song speed.

Haven't tried Rock Band myself (any of them), but would love to. What is it about that engine that you like? Compared to, say, Clone Hero? (: Just curious! Also sucks that those adapters cost that much, didn't know that! That's awesome, would love to get my hands of a GH: Live guitar to test it out! Yeah, the subscription model is a turnoff for many people. /:
@PotatoHandle
@PotatoHandle 2 жыл бұрын
@@DennisMartenssonOfficial Rock Band has always had a much stricter timing window than GH and CH, which I think works well for guitar, but I find the looser window for drums lets you abuse the timing window and get away with too much and play stuff not as it's charted. Rock Band 1-3 had a problem where the hit windows of each note couldn't overlap and would shrink, so doing a really fast snare roll for example would be punishingly difficult, but they fixed this for 4 so I think it's a good mix of tight but forgiving now. I haven't tried CH since the first Drum beta came out though, I should give it another shot.

@@Etholux I already had the ekit set up for Rock band 3, so I bought the pdp adapter as soon as they came out, should have got two though. Sure hope it doesn't break now, it's worth more than the console it's plugged into, haha.
@DennisMartenssonOfficial
@DennisMartenssonOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
@PotatoHandle Gotcha. Yeah, I've noticed Clone Hero's hit window is fairly generous - Sometimes I could have sworn I "should" have missed, but didn't, haha. As you say, makes sense for guitars, but drums by nature has a higher expectancy for tightness. When I made my own drumming game, I decided to make my own scoring system that is less forgiving in a way. It still has a fairly big and generous hit window, but it's not a binary system - just hitting the note doesn't give you the full score for that note. Rather, if you hit a note within that hit window, it will calculate the "distance" to that note, time-wise, and give you a higher score the closer you are to it. It incentivizes true mastery and playing as tight as possible. Would be nice to see such a system on top of the scoring systems in CH/RB - Even if you get the FC, you could have another score that you could compare, allowing you to perfect the song even further. (: I don't know how RB4 fixed that problem you're describing, but it sounds frustrating, haha. If a hit overlaps two hit windows, I just calculate the score for the note that is closest. Seems to work fine for me. (:

there is a notation software called Tonelib jam have a 3d mode similar as rocksmith and drum charts influence by rock band, but it's not made for gaming, but you can transfer rocksmith songs and CDLC to Tonelib Jam and got notation creator, viewer, recorder, and transfer audio files to the software

Can I ask a question? Hypothetically, can these games make you learn how to play musical instruments? I want learn guitar and don't know where to start, what it means to combine notes in right order and etc.
@DennisMartenssonOfficial
@DennisMartenssonOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
Some people will probably disagree, but I'd say, at least these types of games are a nice compliment to your normal practice routine. For guitar, for example, Rocksmith will probably get you to play a bit more, and just get into the hang of it. But you still need to allocate some practice time outside of Rocksmith, maybe go take a guitar lesson, to work on your actual technique and stuff like that. But id' say a mix of regular "boring" practice, working on your fundamentals, and then taking that and applying it while having fun in Rocksmith is probably great!
