When buying any used RV, you must expect that it needs some attention and this low miles 99HD Rialta was no exception. In this video, I show the things that needed attention on mine, so that if you are buying one you can look for similar problem areas.
Update: April 2016
Some repairs in the past few years and 15,000 miles.
1) Clunk when shifting out of park. Replaced pendulum rod $80, which had worn bushing.
2) Loud screech when furnace turned on. Replaced furnace fan motor $50. The old motor bearing was probably dry.
3) Replaced rear shocks $11 (Amazon Warehouse deal) which eliminated a clunk in rear.
4) Replaced coolant hose which was seeping. $40
5) Replaced various Norcold Fridge components icluding the selector switch, ignitor, thermocouple. $150.
6) Painted the hood and mirrors due to clear coat peeling and replaced graphics. $350.
7) Replaced generator muffler clamp $8.
8) Replaced RV windows butyl tape and put in spacers to prevent window sag and leaks.
Also routine maintenance like oil changes, transmission fluid changes (3 times to get all the old fluid out), greased tensioner pully, changed brake fluid, fuel filter, and air filters.

I also have a 1999-HD and love it! Mine is in a little better shape than yours as it only had 5600 miles on it and was garage kept when I bought it. I've had it 4 years now and have been all over the USA, north to south and east to west with no major problems. I did have the coolant hoses replaced as they were looking a little old and showed some fluid seepage. One less worry on a 16 year old RV. Thanks for the video.

Hey Shane, yes I still have it but due to it being 25 years old and my age being 77 years old, I don't feel confident enough to take it on long road trips anymore. Also, the engine water temperature seems to get hot 201-204 with all the stopping and going in slow traffic here in Florida. I can't complain though because my wife and I have had some awesome cross-country trips in it over the years. We've been in every state in the lower 48 plus 2 trips to California, Oregon, and Washington state lasting 3-4 months of travel each trip. I hope you get some nice trips out of yours. Just for your info, we keep the bed made up in the rear and just use the small table behind the passenger seat for dinner if we have to eat inside.@@shanes1221

Fist off, great video and thank you for sharing the level of detail that you did! It is truly helpful to a LOT of us who are seriously looking. THANK YOU!! Now, my friend is set on getting a small RV much like this to live in and travel. I'm looking for her to help find the best deal possible. Do you recommend a "best year" to look for in the Rialta's in order to balance the known problems in some models with the initial purchase price of a used one? I'm looking for around $25,000 at most for her to purchase. In other words, is there a newer model with less problems that won't break the bank? I would appreciate any kind of feedback/advice you may offer. Les Olson

@vwbus79 8 жыл бұрын
Any year could be good if the unit is well maintained and rust free. That said The HD layout was only available from 1999 onward. The 1995 and 1996 models are a foot shorter in length, have a much smaller trunk, and have smaller 5 cylinder engine. Beginning in 1997 the more powerful VR6 engine was introduced. In 2002 the newer VR6 was introduced with more HP. Some 2002 models had an inferior timing chain sprocket that wore prematurely, so if you buy a 2002 find out if the sprocket has been changed. Go to rialtainfo site for details on model changes. The transmission is the weak link especially if the transmission fluid is not changed regularly. If the prior owner installed a cooler or has been doing regular fluid changes that is a real plus. The 1999 and earlier models have a Generac Generator while the 2000 and later models used an Onan. Parts should be easier to acquire for the Onan. Overall I would recommend the later models are probably the best but any model that has been maintained properly should be good. I am very happy with my 1999. After all the initial problems were fixed it has been very reliable and a joy to drive and camp in.

The Rialta rides super smooth and quiet. It really drives and feels like a car. The seats are very comfortable, but if not to your liking, some have replaced the front seats from a minivan. It is also very easy to get in and out of. The coach door is low to ground making it easy to step into which is very important if you have any mobility issues. I have known two different people suffering severe injurings falling down the steps of bigger motorhomes. Thank you for your comment.

I believe Rialta Heaven does a good job getting everything in working order. If you can get lucky and find a previous owner who has kept up with all the repairs, then you will save money. The competing RV now is the Winnebago Trend, I would use pricing on that as a comparison to a Rialta purchased from Rialta Heaven. If you have not visited the Rialtainfo website, I would do do and join the group. The people on the site are extremely knowledgeable.

I took mine to a VW dealer to have the transmission fluid changed and he said if he did it the unit might not move, does that make any since to you, I have 46K miles on the unit and the fluid has never been changed? You did the transmission fluid change, any problems with the transmission afterwards? That transmission temperature gauge looks interesting, was it a hard job? Have you searched for new tires yet?

@vwbus79
@vwbus79 4 жыл бұрын
I think on the 2002 that some of them had timing chain sprocket wear. Other than that, I would say that is a very good price, if rust free, with no water damage. As long as transmission is shifting well and there are no codes. If you buy a Rialta, if there is no history of a transmission fluid change then I would do that as soon as you can, especially if there is no transmission cooler installed.

@vwbus79
@vwbus79 8 жыл бұрын
The transmission issues seem to be caused by VW claiming the transmission fluid should be changed every 40,000 miles. Many owners overheat the fluid in city traffic and up long grades. The VW cooler is not up to the task and the fluid goes over 212 degrees. It can get to 230 plus just driving in stop and go traffic. On long slow mountain grades and can get to 260 degrees. This reduces the life of the fluid significantly. The solution is to change the fluid more often or install a cooler. After an owner effectively burns the fluid then there might be shifting problems. Most transmission shops will want to do a complete rebuild at $5000. Many times all that is needed is a transmission fluid change.

No engine problems? How reliable is it?
@vwbus79
@vwbus79 4 жыл бұрын
The engine has been great. The VR6 engine is very durable. There were a few 2002 models that had an timing chain sprocket that prematurely wore out. The most common failures are the tensioner pulley bearings grease dries up and fails and some water pump failures. Replacing the tensioner pulley is easy and good preventative maintenance. Overall a very reliable engine. The transmission is the source of more failures if it runs hot. You have to add a cooler or change the transmission fluid preferably every 20 thousand miles if you are not running a cooler. When you change the fluid it is a partial change of about 2/3 of the fluid. If you did a full change then every 40 thousand should be ok. Also making sure ground connections are clean helps and making sure your TCM and ECM computers stay dry. If the windshield leaks it could cause corrosion. Also vacuum leaks can be a source of problems. A scan guage will give you codes to help diagnose problems. So far I have not had any codes or any issues in 40k miles I have owned it.

@vwbus79 7 жыл бұрын
old .northsider Prices are all over the map. They can range anywhere from 10K to 30K depending on condition and mileage. I saw one the other day that looked great but the owner told me it was rusted underneath and the rear leaf spring mounts broke. He welded new metal underneath so definitely due a thorough inspection. Even though I had a bunch of typical problems, they were all relatively easy fixes and it has been very reliable on the road and we really enjoy it.

If your generator is working it is simple to use, just make sure the big black power cord is plugged into electrical box in the trunk which is located by the cord on the driver's side in the trunk. There is a start switch on a panel inside the coach as well as on the generator itself. If you try to start it using the switch on the generator, wear ear protection in case it backfires when starting.

@@doublew030 Ahh that old trope! I don’t know if there any statistics on this. There are statistics however on what individual states contribute in taxes to the federal government, and what they get back in benefits. Overwhelmingly, blue states are makers - they pay more taxes then they get back in benefits. Red states are mostly takers - they take more in benefits than they contribute in taxes. “THE FACTS: Connecticut residents paid an average of $15,643 per person in federal taxes in 2015, according to a report by the Rockefeller Institute of Government. Massachusetts paid $13,582 per person, New Jersey paid $13,137 and New York paid $12,820. California residents paid an average of $10,510. At the other end, Mississippi residents paid an average of $5,740 per person, while West Virginia paid $6,349, Kentucky paid $6,626 and South Carolina paid $6,665. Low-tax red states also fare better when you take into account federal spending. Mississippi received $2.13 for every tax dollar the state sent to Washington in 2015, according to the Rockefeller study. West Virginia received $2.07, Kentucky got $1.90 and South Carolina got $1.71. Meanwhile, New Jersey received 74 cents in federal spending for tax every dollar the state sent to Washington. New York received 81 cents, Connecticut received 82 cents and Massachusetts received 83 cents. California fared a bit better than other blue states. It received 96 cents for every dollar the state sent to Washington. On average, states received $1.14 in federal spending for every tax dollar they sent to Washington. That’s why the federal government has a budget deficit.” Of course not every person in a blue state is a Democrat, and not everyone in Red State is a Republican. But you see the pattern. Blue States are funding our government while red states are the “welfare queens”

Can't believe you are complaining about normal wear and tear on a 15 yr old vehicle. SMH! It looks in very good shape to me for its age. I had to replace my door seal after 4 yrs on my 5th wheel. And I had to replace half of the cabinet hinges. I didn't complain, I called it LIFE!

Good info. and tips. Thank you. but seriously? ALL those problems? I think you got a LEMON!
@raysills
@raysills 8 жыл бұрын
+Nora Steel I disagree... a lemon is something that was bad from the start. I think the prior owner was a bit careless, and likely did not keep up with good maintenance. BTW... most of the issues lie at the doorstep of Winnebago, not VW.

The previous owner just let the problems pile up. There were not any big issues and all the repairs I could do myself. Now that I am all caught up, I just fix things as they need attention.

lance hansen A windshield replacement guy, took a look at it, and said to replace the gasket the windshield would have to be removed, even though the windshield is glued in. Since the windshield was a VW original in good shape I decided to repair the gasket using urethane as best I could. Thanks for the comment.

John Vest So far so good with the Generac in my Rialta. It runs fine under load but without a load it runs erratically, so I turn it off. I wish it would idle smoothly when not under a load. It only has about a 100 hours on it.

+Richard Day To each his own, of course. One nice feature of the Rialta is that will fit into a garage... important these days, because many HOAs have rules against parking an RV in your driveway. Cars are fine... just no RVs.

I would stick with Toyota and Ford units of this size. I wont buy a Eurovan due to the issues and high costs. So over valued and just a nightmare.
@vwbus79

I would agree that repairs at the VW dealer can be expensive, but if you do preventative maintenence like changing the transmission oil, regreassing the tensioner pully, and repairing water leaks through the skylight and RV windows, you should not experience any more problems than other brands. Also Rialta's that are maintained, as well as earlier VW campers seem to hold their value.

Rialta99 My friend's Eurovan V6 has been a pricey specimen. They maintain it really well and it barely has over 100k miles. I have had reasonable luck with my 92 GTI 16v, but newer V dubs seem so complicated. Too many electronic issues.

bbq10 The point of the video was to make other potential owners of problem areas so they can ask all the right questions. It has definitely been a learning experience as this is our first RV. Overall the 15 year old Rialta was in very good shape and we were able to take care of all the issues. The key with any car or RV is too keep up with the repairs as needed. We have already spent 7 enjoyable months traveling in it.

bbq10: You have never had an RV have you? Salesman do not complain but once you own an RV...you start to whine. Yet we can smile as we do.We gather all over the US and complain. Remember these darn things cost far more than they should and if you are spending 20K plus they really should be perfect. Yet they are not. Yes...I do have cheese with my whine.

I believe that this wonderful car has only a few problems. The first problem is the gasket. A gasket that sits in the driver's seat and criticizes this undoubtedly beautiful car. Another problem with this car is the automatic transmission, which is not designed for such a massive configuration, and the gasoline engine, which is not clear why Americans love it and everyone else hates it. at roughly the same price of gasoline and diesel, a gasoline engine consumes about 17 liters of fuel on the highway, while a 111 kW (151 hp) diesel engine consumes about 7 liters. within the limits of driving in the city, this indicator can be safely multiplied by 1.35-1.5, depending on the traffic.
