Going to practice this ASAP - just bought my first ribber, and have had lots of struggles with the manual's instructions. Love that you start with waste yarn. Great video, I've taken 2 of your craftsy classes years ago, and still refer to them often. Thanks for all you do!

This is was so so useful- thank you Susan. I just followed this method using my Silver Reed and after a few iterations (adjusting the tension to suit my yarn), the ribbed edge it produced is beautiful, neat and elastic.

You are a goddess Susan!! I tried all ways to cast on with my ribber and get a good outcome, followed loads of videos, the terrible manual that came with the machine and text instructions but only yours actually worked and worked beautifully!! Thank You!!! :-D

I make with the waste yarn the 2 last rows like: Carriage on the main bed: on S-J , knit 1 row, carriage on the double bed : 0-1, than I start with main yarn, so you need NO nylon cord! and it save time!

Hi Susan: Thanks for all or your helpfull videos, but any chance that you have one for a 2x2 rib cast on? It doesn't seem to be as straight forward as a 1x1 (at least; I have not had any success with it)

Hi what type of knitting machine you are using?

This is such a pretty rib, thank you! I wonder why you knit only two circular rows. Are there any advantages compared to three circular rows?
@SusanGuagliumi2 жыл бұрын
I think it looks more like a hand knit edge. If you are happy with the 3 circular rows keep doing it that way. I think the Japanese machines show the 3 rows to help compensate for the angle of the ribber to therein bed and the way it affects stitch formation.

Thanks for the brilliant video!! I have recently found that when I bring my carriage across for the first time in order to cast on not all needles on my ribber are engaging and hence not knitting! Do you know if this is a common problem or easily fixable?

I'm doing something wrong. >: - / I've tried this twice now with the second time carefully taking down notes to follow. Both times when I pull the ravel cord I have live stitches on my main yarn and the cast on edge comes unraveled. This ribbing edge is so gorgeous and I want to be able to do it - I just cannot figure out what I'm missing. I'm doing the zig-zag row after the ravel cord, then the two rows of slipping on one bed and knitting on the other and reversing the other way, then onto plain knitting for my ribbing (incrementally raising the stitch size each pass). Any suggestions would sure be appreciated!
@SusanGuagliumi5 жыл бұрын
When you say two rows of slipping on one bed and then switching, it makes me wonder - you should be knitting one row on (for example) the ribber bed, while the main bed slips and then knitting one row on therein bed while the ribber slips. Not two rows on one bed. See if that is the problem.
@mizdottie80485 жыл бұрын
@@SusanGuagliumi Thank you for responding. I think that's what was happening. I was getting confused by trying to follow both the manual directions and your directions and somehow ended up knitting two rows on one bed and slipping on the other. I gave it another try and - - viola! Lovely cast on edge. Thank you for your video and your response.

Ple-ese explain why the first row made of the main yarn does not unravel then??
@liannelambregts57443 жыл бұрын
The first row is kept by the circulair second and third row. The ravelcord lays in between those rows.

What is it SLIP? Does this mean that the yarn gets caught in the needle of the machine? Yarn doesn't knit?
@knit19244 жыл бұрын
No, it means that only the other bed is knitting, whichever bed you put to slip, doesn't knit, until you put it back to knit. The slip setting is on the dial with the stitch sizes, in the middle of the carriage. Hope this helps.

I have been trying to do this and I am having a hard time, and I think part of the problem is that I don't understand why you do a couple of things - like, why circular knitting in the middle of it? Also, why are you switching which one knits and which one slips on each row? I thought if you set the carriages to to each knit or slip in one direction, that you wouldn't have to keep switching back and forth. I'm pretty new to machine knitting, so excuse the ignorance if these are dumb questions. Thanks!
@SusanGuagliumi5 жыл бұрын
The two circular rows make it easy to separate the two pieces - the waste knitting and the main knitting.

Yet another clearly explained and informative video! Thank you Susan. Can I just ask what settings I would use for brother knitting machine? I'm new to machine and I'm struggling to work out the settings for brother. Thank you
@SusanGuagliumi5 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid I do not have ribber for either of my Brother machines so do not have the visual right here to guide me! The important thing to understand is what each of the levers does. On the main carriage it is easy to set the Part Buttons to make the carriage slip from the left or the right. With the ribber, there should be some levers that also control whether or not the ribber is knitting in either direction.
@misssimmi25 жыл бұрын
@@SusanGuagliumi thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my question, I know how busy you must be. I really appreciate it. I'm trying to understand what the buttons and levers do but it's a bit confusing. I'll work it out...... eventually!
@SusanGuagliumi5 жыл бұрын
@@misssimmi2 Just remember that the slipping (part) buttons on your carriage work both ways - the leading lever is always the one in control. Wish I had a ribber n front of me to tell you about those settings.
