The design of this game is really weird, in that the biggest reward lies in going straight for the hole. I'm not sure if it's how the game is designed, but they should at least have included some kind of sweet spot on every level that would carry you through a long chain of points, to then secure a spot in the hole, and it becomes a game of finding that sweet spot and then managing to get to it from the right angle and shit.

The extra stuff around the course is to make the game more interesting when you mess up, rather than to encourage you to go out there. It's still golf scoring: fewer shots nets you more points.
