I learned how to roller skate on flat roller skates, and it was way harder to learn to skate. I’m a very clumsy person, so I fell really hard many times, and I messed up my lower back. (It didn’t stop me from continuing though) When I finally decided to switch over to a heeled roller skate (I was still a beginner), I found that it was way easier to learn tricks, and to keep my balance.

I use them all - artistic skate, speed skates, and one I made from my last pair of shoes with no extra stability. The shoe skates did take some getting used to due to the softer sole, but you can find many "tennis" shoes with a harder sole that you can use as well. I love all 3 styles, indoor skating and outdoor, for all types of skating. However, I've been skating for 43 years, so definitely NOT a "new" skater! LOL Once you get used to one style, while the mechanics are slightly different as far as balance and such, it's not really that difficult to go from one style to another. I've been known to switch which the skates I use in a single session at the rink and often bring them all when we go.

Hello ! You seem very knowlegeable and I was wondering if I could ask you some questions? Firstly I am an intermediate to advanced skater and I am looking for good high quality skates that wont tear or part away from the heel when I jump and turn; what would be your best recommmendation? And Secondly I have very large feet do you know brands that sell boots for lager footed women ? Thankyou so much!
@MystiqueRisingSun
@MystiqueRisingSun 3 жыл бұрын
@@fatal_goose4017 If you're in the U.S. - Riedell has many models for wider feet, but I wouldn't worry too much about the "women's vs. men's" thing. MOST of the mid to upper level skates are sized for men...and are available in a wide range of colors. Growing up, I had my choice of white, black, or "rental brown". (Honestly, I think that's just part of why I have an obsession with skates today...SO many pretty colors/patterns to choose from! LOL) As for a "perfect fit", measure your foot and ask the company which size you should get once you decide on a model you like. It's the most accurate way. Many brands will say "Down one size" or "Up two sizes", etc. to convert from those men's to a women's size...but it's not always accurate. Measure twice (trace your feet on plain paper, in the socks you'll most likely use while skating)...measure the length and width (at the widest point) of BOTH feet in inches, centimeters and millimeters. As far as good quality - almost anything that isn't vinyl, and be sure the boot is stitched as well as glued to the sole. Some suede and leather boots have the issue as well, but it's less likely for them to come apart like vinyl boots do. Just a note: if you're looking for a vegan boot with the same quality, unfortunately, you won't find it...they all come apart eventually. Looking at skates online (or if you're fortunate enough to have a rink/pro shop near you), you'll clearly see the stitching on the bottom of the boots. Sometimes the plate does cover the stitching though. If the whole surface of the sole is covered by the plate, do your research on the specific brand/model you're interested in to see if it is stitched, glued, or both.

@@mandybarlow Sorry I didn't see this until today!!! :( But, I HAVE actually skated both at the same time...since I do that mainly at the rink - all those left turns - I use a speed/derby boot on my left with the high top/heeled boot on my right. I did try it the other way, but crossing over felt like I had to "step up" with the heel on my left and flat on my right. Very odd feeling. While I do feel like I'm stepping "down" with the way I do it, it is a bit easier to manage...and I can get up to speed with as much control as I normally have when skating one or the other. I still do that about once a month at the local rink (started before everything was shut down for the pandemic) just to see people's faces when they realize I have two different skates on. :D

I started skating last year and have always worn a heeled boot, I had some basic no-name skates and then a pair of Moxi Beach Bunnies. I loovvee my beach bunnies for cruising and leisure skating, but I got super into the skate park and wanted something better suited for the park. I actually only got a flat skate because the Chaya Kismet skates were the only semi-affordable full park set up out of the box (grind blocks and park wheels can be really expensive). It actually wasn't too hard for me to adjust to the flat skates because I already knew about falling backward so I just focused on leaning forward, and now I'm OBSESSED. I dropped in with my flat skates for the first time yesterday and they're SO MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE. I also feel way more in control when I'm jumping and landing so I can get way more air. If you love the skate park I highly recommend a flat skate!

Great video! It's confusing for beginners when social media is flooded with mainly people on pretty heeled skates. I chose flat for my first skates (Chaya Vintage Voyagers), more comfortable for my wide feet plus heeled skates felt claustrophobic so high up my ankle. I fell backwards a lot learning transitions, but I also learned to go fast, stay stable doing crossovers, weaving, slalom and awareness of my different centres of gravity on them. I got heeled skates recently (Chuffed) for nights out when I want to groove / socialise / dance. They're slower and feel chill. I'm glad I learned on flats, rather than the other way around, I'm more confident in many skate styles now. My main skates are Bont Prostars (flat) - they're like little sports cars. :)

I think it boils down to what style you’re looking towards. I’m almost 💯 a rhythm skater and my indoor and outdoor skates are both a heeled boot. I tried a flat heel a few years back and I felt like a duck lol. Plus if I tried to do any skating up on the toes which I do a lot it was far more work without the heel because otherwise you have about an inch head start. I grew up skating in rental boots though. I’ll still hit the vert at the local skatepark here and there with my heeled boot but I could see where one would want the flat shoe style for park skating.

I think Impalas are perfect for what you're looking for. I got back into skating last August and started up on a pair of Impalas. They're incredibly comfortable. This said, I quickly learned what a daredevil I am.. I'm REALLY rough on skates... so within a month or so the boots started separating from the plate at the heel. Impala was kind enough to replace them since they were very new, but I still ended up just buying a pair of suede Moxi boots (just got them in January). TL;DR: it was easy to switch from derby skates to skates with heels but not the other way around. I started as a fresh meat in derby, but had to take three months off due to injury...then I started skating again on skates with heels but the boot was cheap (glued, could not afford the good ones) so it came apart and today I had to put my outdoor wheels on my old derby shoes and it was challenging to skate around indoors...I was definitely putting way more weight on my back wheels than I should, haha. Going out tomorrow in them, cannot wait to slam my butt and relearn the tricks XD. My friends are going to help me make my own skates with vans shoes soon (cheaper option, as I already have everything from the other skates, only need to replace the boot and add aluminium insole) but in the future I would love to own the Chaya karma AND Moxi skates with the Jack boot. :)

I picked up a pair of rollerskate around a year ago from a thrift store for 20$. They were flat speed skates from the late 80s and after I repurposed some hardware and got new wheels I learned pretty quickly. But oh my goodness when I switched to a heeled boot (another thrifted pair of chicago's for 7.50 no wheels) and smaller wheels... The game was CHANGED. I used to dance competitively so maybe the balance of the toe makes more sense to me but if you're struggling with tricks and anything other than crossovers, get a raised heel dude they are amazing. I still use my flat skates with soft, chunky skateboard wherls for outdoor cruising on trails but I use my boots at the skate park with smaller wheels.

I've been skating in heels skates for 1 year, but it began to gives me a lot of knee problems. So I made my own skates, added up a low heel and it just feels perfect. Today I feel that the heel in those skates are way more taller than they needed to be, but it's really easier to learn and dance on these.

I am super flat-footed as well, but bought all-leather riedell boots. Someone at my local roller rink pounded the inner ankles down a bit for me! Still got blisters to break them in, but now they're awesome and I've been skating indoors and outdoors for years on them!! All leather boots always eventually form to your foot! 😉

I skate on heeled skates all the time but on one occasion, my skates were with my dad cuz he was replacing the bearings and plates for me so I put on my friends old flat skates and immediately fell. I couldn’t get used to then at all, especially cuz these skates didn’t have any trucks at all.

Weird question what makes it so easy to fall backwards? I used to inline like 20 years ago. I have roler skates on the way, cuz my gf skates and i want to tag along sometimes. I never really fell backwards rollerblading. I know you have more stability forward and backward, but i never really had a problem staying over my toes a bit.

Cool, I used to skate rollerskates like 25 yrs ago, before inlines (those that you tighten to shoes with leather bands). Wanted to try it again and saw a video about putting some frames to a UFS boot but now can't find more that the video... You know something about that?

** Buca You could pop into a good local skate shop. Don't look for the cheapest pair. but skates are so much more affordable now, you don't have to spend a fortune for good skates that will help your skating. Try them on and roll on one foot (just don't smash anything - hence one foot) 🤣 Great way to get a feel for what you might like 👍

I haven’t skated in 10 years before now, and I love the Chaya Karmas, but I have ehlers danlos syndrome (my joints are floppier and dislocate easier) and need a skate with a little more ankle support that I can still jump in. I’ve been researching, but I’d rather learn from people who are actually skating.

The flat ones are also good for the knees... They have girdles and padded skating shorts on amazon to protect your tailbone and back when/if you fall.

Yes, most that do dance tricks have heeled ones. Like the all-leather Riedell model 172 boot. I have these - way above my skill level, but the ankle is flexible and they're so comfy!!!! (you will get past the break-in blisters)

THE LINO LIFE I currently use a Riedell boot with a generic set of plates, since I'm still new to skating. Once I have the money though, I'm going to try to go into business selling skates. I understand the mechanics of it all, and there's literally nowhere withing 300 miles of where I live that sells skates without buying straight out of a catalog.

I have a question, but first I want to explain my experience so far. I learned to ice skate, I have raised (but not suuuper raised) stiff fake leather skates. I'm still a beginner but not a total novice, I have a feel for the basics now. I always did well with not falling backwards. I hate the restriction on my ankle. In the long run I really want optimal control and flexibility. It seems I have a good feel for the dangers and all the support feels restricting to me, even as a beginner. In the long run I really want low cut soft shoe flat quads and soft shoe inline skates which cover the ankle but are still soft, maybe hard on the sides somehow but soft for the backward and forward movement for sure. I want to feel the soft shoe all around and have the freedom to tighten it and loosen it wherever I want. I found exactly these types of skates online and they're quite cheap used! Here is my concern - although I think I do quite well with not falling backwards, I feel like you just need to fall back hard once to break a bone or something. I don't want any serious injuries like that. Could I put some type of insole, maybe diy, and glue it or something, just to raise the back a little bit, like one centimeter or less? Is that risky for a low cut boot? Does anyone have experience with that and how to secure the insole well?
