America's Heartland

America's Heartland

Күн бұрын

Reporter Sarah Gardner says if you're eating more rice in your meals these days, you're not alone. Thanks to consumers with more adventurous tastes and changes in America's ethnic makeup, rice consumption has grown dramatically. Rice farmers in Louisiana bring in a double harvest in their rice fields: rice and bright red crawfish. Meet an Arkansas farmer raising special rice for Japanese diners. And a California rice grower gets some help from school children in saving wild duck eggs.

Oh man, the part with the stuffed cornish hen is awesome... My brother's wife was part of the Christian minority in Iraq but moved here several years ago when they got married and I can tell you, her cooking is amazing... There is a dish that she makes, Chicken Biryani, and truly the rice is the star of the meal.. she partially fries angel hair pasta, and the rice, and also raisins, then uses a special recipe of spices that is a family secret recipe from her mom when she combines them and boils the rice, pasta mix... man, this Georgia boy LOVES it... Fresh English peas, roasted, cubed potato, slices of boiled egg go on top as well... So good your tongue'll slap your brains out! I'm a meat and potatoes kind of fellow but I love everything she makes... A good curry chicken and rice, biryani, dolma... klecha (a cookie like desert that has an incredible combination of hot and sweet spices)... She's definitely brought a great amount of flavor to our family...

I never ate much rice but that all change when 40 years ago I married a Filipino Chinese woman. I was her sisters village when they brought in the harvest. The taste of fresh rice is hard to describe to anyone who has not tried it. I also learned that at least for me Jasmine rice is the best tasting of all others. Also where I live we call them crawdads.

Ho that's great the kids saved 12 eggs. I did not hear which kind of pesticide they use, the quantity used, genetic modification or natural seeds? What a great world, our kids save some eggs when the agriculture industry...well, money is important. Looks good what the chef prepared, but the more important is the taste, and a good taste depends of the quality of the ingredients. Try to buy local and organic. And if you think it is more expensive, shitty products are of course cheaper, it depends of your values, it depends what you choose to put in your body and your kids' one. We are all responsible persons.

1. I never knew rice was grown in the U.S. Especially in Arkansas, of all places. At 33, I still learn something new every day!. 2. Indiana calls them Crawdaddies. When I was a kid, I caught them in creeks all the time. Then I moved to Florida, where there's bigger fish to fry :) 3. Do a special on Hemp. You can do thousands of things with that crop.
