Leaving the wedding was a kindness. The bride, if she really was going to enter into a loving relationship with her new husband, didn't need the distraction of the inheritance. It wasn't like the sister was part of the bridal party. She was "just a teacher" and would be a perceived "embarrassment" to their social standards.
