I find it a bit ironic that these coaches are pining for the days when they could run their programs without any oversight and with the full blessing of the administration. Look what that did for Penn State. Saban and other D1 coaches are consistently the highest paid personnel in their institutions of "higher" learning and were absolutely shameless about leaving kids in the lurch when they found higher paying jobs at other institutions, or went to "better" programs, or went to the pros. So of course the coaches are upset and leaving. In my mind, they have lost all credibility long ago when arguing about keeping the sanctity of college sports. Heck, the Pac-12 disintegrated essentially because of money, and they didn't care a lick about their students when they made that decision. So why the handwringing about NIL and players now being able to keep their coaches honest when they are promised playing time and compensation?

I think how demanding the job has become at top schools is genuinely a factor. College coaches used to have to recruit kids in high school and then coach their team. Now because of NIL and transfer portal they also have to recruit the kids on their team year-round so that they stay, try to recruit kids from other colleges in the transfer portal, and convince boosters to contribute to NIL, oftentimes all at the same time because of how messed up the college football schedule is. Of course they will get no sympathy when they are paid millions, but they're human so it's no surprise some of them are burning out or no longer enjoying doing the profession enough to put up with the additional demands.

Most agree and have agreed kids needs to get paid, it’s just the fact that it’s 24/7 365x days of recruiting even once you have the players on the team. "Nil assurances" should not be possible for a university to give a student. You earn the playing time. You use the PT to make an impact. The impact gives value to your endorsements. The endorsements pay you.

The 13 million for OSU was MOSTLY to retain existing players. They only signed 6 from the portal. They retained 10 starters that would have been round 2-7 draft picks (using NIL).

Every New market has a period of price discovery that feels like the wild west… Just sign multi year NIL contracts with performance incentives, that are paid out incrementally. That way the kids know exactly how much they stand to make next year, and what they will lose if they transfer. Texas A&M spent the most last year and they had a horrible season by SEC standards. You don’t actually have to placate every kid who shows up demanding money. Your organizational structure should be telling players “we don’t do any playing and guarantees. Don’t ask.” Hire an NIL coordinator and direct most NIL questions to them.

I actually had a similar experience as Rich however I was still in undergrad. My undergraduate degrees are in journalism & history but my hope was to become an investigative reporter one day. However one of my professors kept telling us if it bleeds it leads & was more about sensationalism and Han actually reporting the story. I then got chastised because I didn’t want to ask a grandmother who didn’t know if her grandchildren were still alive or not because of an apartment fire how she was feeling fully knowing she wasn’t in the right mind to be answering questions at that moment. I then decided that journalism just wasn’t for me if this is what the job was going to be about.

There is a peace you attain when you realize your lane isn't going to lead to the unlimited level of money/power/advancement. Chip Kelly has acknowledged his lane and embraced it. The way I've always justified it is asking the question "how much would I be willing to pay to never have to do XYZ job or task again?" That's how much less money you should be willing to settle for to be happy. The sad part is, you have to go out of your lane and see how much you hate it before you can truly identify your lane to get back in it. Chip Kelly is going to have the greatest, most enjoyable year an offensive coordinator has EVER had. The joy he'll have at NOT dealing with NIL cannot be measured.

NIL isn’t the problem. The transfer portal is the issue. They have to get some type of control over player movement. If the coach leaves or gets fired then allow them to transfer or if they’re a graduate. Otherwise they stay at the school they’re at and collect their NIL money yearly.

There's no part of college sports that makes sense. Not the admissions policies that lower academic standards and scholarships for athletes, not the "amateurism" model that paid the coaches millions, not the colleges' billions of dollars in investments on sports when they're supposed to be institutions for higher learning. Sports are fun, but I'm pretty much in favor of anything that disrupts the current college sports model.

I know it's a super micro-version of this situation, but I'm a high school offensive coordinator. As long as I got to work under a HC like that one I have, I'd never want his job. The higher up the chain you go, the less actual coaching you get to do. If you're making enough money to live the life you want, and your superiors give you the desired amount of autonomy, life is pretty good being the guy next to "the guy".

Chip recruited Ryan Day to New Hampshire, where he was the QB and Chip was OC. Then Chip brought Ryan in as an assistant TE coach at NH and gave him his break into coaching. He also gave him his break as a coach in the NFL when Chip was hired by the Eagles and later at SF. They go back pretty much Ryan Day's entire career. Ryan was among the first to understand and implement Chip's offense

My mom was born in Texas so I'm a Cowboys fan &I was born in LA so I'm a USC supporter, this put me in a position to watch Chip Kelly's career more than most. I watched him some how build Oregon into a power-house &go to the NFL and win there too for a time. I think due to how his NFL career ended in San Fran, Chip doesn't get any where near the credit he deserves for changing the way offense is played in college &the NFL. The sport of college football changed after Chip Kelly won at Oregon &the NFL wasn't ready for him either; winning 10-games his first season in Philly How many people have an offense named after them?? Think about all the genius play-callers today, they all run the West-Coast offense; each one puts their own spin on it but it's not named after any one of them. Chip Kelly was considered a style of offense at one time. Mashup Peyton's 2-minute offense w/ the run-option &jet-sweeps and that's Chip's offense. The up tempo, sideline to sideline, R-P-O and smaller players on both sides of the ball have all become staples in the modern NFL. Not to mention that Chip did it w/ 3-star recruits, walk-ons &transfer kids; long before it was the norm

What Coach Prime has figured out - helping his players get exposure. He, and his social media team, work very hard to get players exposed. It’s not just the celebrity players. If a player works hard, Prime helps. Walk on Charlie Offerdahl is the perfect example. The kid has the heart and desire of ‘Rudy’. He doesn’t start, or even play very much, but yet Prime helps get him exposure… I’ve never seen a coach work as hard as using their own celebrity to get players exposed. That is what he has figured out.

Super wrong about UNH Football. Chip Kelly Coached under Sean McDonald before going to Oregon. Ryan Day played for Coach Sean McDonald as a student-athlete. Mac led that program to 14 straight playoff appearances, an NCAA FCS Record. That is his program.

Let's be clear, unless you are going to put some rules around the coaches (quitting, taking a different job, how much money they make, etc.) then this is not a discussion about paying players, it's a discussion about whether players should have rights. If you're going to put rules on it, it needs to apply to the schools, the coaches, the staff, AND the players. College football was always minor-league football, now they're being forced to deal with the realities of being a minor-league organization (get your orgs together and create rules for a level playing field...for the first time ever).

A good analogy, but a touch different is Medicine. Many Doctors enter the profession for the right reasons. (We are a medical family). Once you graduate and start working, in many cases patient treatment is now controlled by Medical codes, Pharma, outdated protocols you are asked to follow. There are NIL rules. It's called the Uniform Commercial Code. The parties negotiate and sign, what don't you get? Oh, I see! Terry Donahue UCLA greatest head coach said the hardest part of his job was seeing recruits, all who had high hopes of a great college career, fail to realize their dreams. Those same players, some who may have simply not been good enough, today would be bitchin' and moanin' about playing time and NIL money. I don't blame head coaches for quitting. Being a head coach in today's environment is a 16 hour a day grind of dealing with crap that has nothing to do with football - raising NIL money, dealing with boosters, and assuaging the egos of entitled snowflakes. I think it's a horrible job.

It’s not that they don’t want players getting paid it’s about not wanting to be a coach and a general manager. In the NFL the head coach coach’s and has little to no impact signing, drafting, and trading players that’s what the General Manager is for.
