Danny Amendola hit the nail on the head, when he said, "We played for Tom, we worked for Bill". The classic managerial conundrum: positive vs negative motivation. The whole situation will make a great study on human motivational styles someday.

Bill made so many ballsy in game calls that it's hard to remember them all but the one that I will never forget was his fourth and two call in Indy. Brass balls. That was the most pressure packed, electrifying regular season moment I can ever remember and Bill had the balls to make that call to put it in Brady's hands on his own 30. Totally awesome. Only a totally confident and prepared HC could make a call like that. Most others would wilt and punt. Well, they were DEAD if they punted!

Bang on. Without Bill, it’s entirely possible that Brady isn’t even the answer to a Michigan trivia question. Never starts, fades into oblivion like so many others. Without Tom, Bill might have won 1 of the first 3, and none of the last 3. Together they were legend. What a gift… and a curse for the rest of the league.

Few people realize that without Bill, Willie McGinest would never have achieved monster pass rusher and edge setter status that helped them win multiple SBs. Willie and Tedy were nobodies, misused by Pete Carroll, until Bill found out how to utilize them to get the best out of them. That happened all the time even on offense, especially the OL, but how about Edelnut, Welker and a bunch of guys? They all rose from nobodies to somebodies and Bill had a lot to do with that. Tom even. Tom was not Tom in 2000 or even 2001. It took a lot of coaching, Charlie Weiss included.

Tom provided the skill and Bill provided the focus. It seemed clear to me when Tom's 2nd - 3rd seasons in Tampa. Where the team was too interested in being loose and having fun and not grinding out the season. Where Bill only knows how to grind it out and not be very fun. So removing one of those dynamics it is near impossible to have sort of success they had.

@173jaSon371 10 ай бұрын
He tried a bunch of times to bring in WRs, it just never worked. They run a complex system which is why guys like Ocho didn't work out there. Since 2016 they brought in Cooks, Gordon, AB, Dorsett, Harry, Malcolm Mitchell(good rookie year, bad knees made him retire), Sanu, etc. They also had Welker and Gronk, who are absolutely worthy of WR1, even Gronk at TE. Welker had FIVE consecutive 110 catch seasons. Gronk had over 60 TDs his first 5 years with the Patriots and is the best EVER red zone threat. Plus they got tons of valuable RBs like Faulk, Woodhead, Burkhead, Vereen, Dion Lewis, Blount, Corey Dillon, James White, etc. Honestly, for all the "Brady had no weapons" talk, he had either Welker, Moss, or Gronk or multiple of them every year from 2007-2018 and before that had all-world defenses while his passing game was still developing, along with great RBs all the time, including receiving backs. They worked with RBs and TEs so well that they didn't need 2 or 3 great WRs.

The bad takes on his drafting and roster building will never end. Even people saying he was fired because of his GM decisions are morons. Sure he didn't replace the WR position or TE position recently and he finally stopped finding slot in OLs in the last two years after losing Thuney but look across the roster. RB, OL, CB, S, LB, DL, and ST he seamlessly replaced via drafting to the point he didn't re-sign a single draft pick from 2013-2023 and won 3 Superbowls in that span.@@173jaSon371

The answer is, "Yes, if he goes to a loaded team like Tom did." Frankly, I hope McCarthy does a McCarthy, Dallas opens up and he does exactly that. But yes, the debate is beyond idiotic. The fact it's football obscures that it's actually apples and oranges. More accurately, it betrays the self-serving nature, or simplemindedness of those who proffer it. Of course, the Tombos will insist that BRADY made Welker, Edelman etc into great players, not Bill (hmm, maybe Tom sat in the draft room and did that too) and that it's actually evidence of Tom making Bill's garbage into a rose garden. And if you respond with ordinary defensive players made into excellent ones (hmm, Vrabel?), they'll try to convince you Tom somehow "inspired" or "led" them too. Add special teams--hell, for all we know, Vinatieri soaked up some of Tom's gamma rays before the 2001 postseason, right? Add St Peter and God on Tuesdays to the list.

So did his buddy Saban trick him? Is he just like Tua - only good w/ an incredibly talented receiving corps? He was the most ready to immediately play out of his draft class, but he would have benefited from sitting behind a veteran QB. Brady sat for 1-year (Rodgers for 3-years). Jones graduated from Alabama in 3-years, & entered the draft after winning the CFP. He already had a year less playing time b/c of that (vs. Brock Purdy playing 4-years at Iowa State, experience matters!). Also didn't Kraft really want Mac Jones? 🤔

What made Belichick's teams great, at least since McDaniel's was there, was he had the winning formula. In later years, it was Belichick, McDaniel and Brady. Belichick handle the defense, McDaniel the offense & Brady was their QB. Brady was, by the way, never the highest paid. He made so much money over his career, because he played for such a long time. Brady got paid pretty descent at Tampa, but that's another story.

So bias !! Why can’t bill after Tom left get the best out of everybody on those 7th, 8th round draft picks. It’s so funny that suddenly all of his magic that you talk about was no where to be found like jezz just look at his last season they can’t even win a football game. My guess here Belicheck can teach and tell you how to play good football, but that alone isn't enough to motivate and unite a whole team, they have to all want it. And Brady's leadership on the field makes his teammates want to go through the trials and tribulations, especially since he puts in as much work as anyone can & What I think made Brady such a good teammate was that he held himself and his players to such a high standard and I think everyone could get on board with a player that is interested in everybody's bests. That's is also why Tom was the reason for the dynasty. He was the patriots way & when he left that building the dynasty is over. Clearly I don't ever gonna think bill can win a chip without Brady.

Go watch the 2003 and 2004 seasons - the whole games, not just highlights, and get back to me on how that was all Brady. Even the limited players you mention - Brady they carried 4 QBs to keep (there was a REASON he dropped to 199!) and by the time of Bledsoes injury he was the backup and people back then thought Belichick wanted Brady to eventually replace Bledsoe (Just as he had done in Cleveland) but the injury occurred, Gronk was considered a reach by many because of his back problems but that pick (with Hernandez) was part of the two TE play that was started earlier with Graham and Watson and developed, Edleman was a converted QB to WR from day one, Malloy was the tough decision that we all hated but he DID replace Malloy with a better player, and McCourty was converted to safety and he had a long career. When people say it was all Brady anyone who actually watched those years KNOWS it wasn't true and we remember having to DEFEND BRADY and tell people it wasn't just the Belichick and the defense with Brady hiding behind a "dink & dunk" offense powered by the running game! And as for Cleveland, besides the fact that a lot of people fail at the first job, learn, and then succeed; go read what that final season in Cleveland was like and tell me who was going to win games. This wasn't like San Diego moving to LA - there were congressional hearings, court injunctions, the possibility of the team not being able to play outside of Ohio (forfeiting half their games), and impacted other teams - Bengals got their new stadium, Seahawks brought to court to stop them moving. It was mess that happened right before the season and lasted throughout. Maybe there is a reason they went from 11-5 with a playoff win to a bad final season. And of course all the players who played for him and against him, and other coaches, talking about how great he was all know less than you, don't they?

You also conveniently left out 2 Super Bowl rings he won as Defensive Coordinator for the NY Giants. Do the math, Belichick has 8 rings! But people whine & say that doesn't count b/c it was before Brady or he wasn't the Head Coach. - all excuses to justify your version of history. Oh and if Brady's new coach Bruce Arians didn't have beef w/ AB, he wouldn't have run off the field mid-game. That coach cost Brady a 2nd ring w/ the Buccaneers . . . perhaps that led to his retiring as HC & becoming an advisor? Brady & Belichick were exponentially better together and far greater than the sum of the parts individually.
