You clearly don't follow the Steelers. There is a segment of the fan base and local media that literally blame Tomlin for every loss, and give him zero credit when they win. The fact he even got this team into the playoffs this year is a testament to his ability as a coach. Sure, they lost in the playoff game, but they were playing a third string QB and were missing the best player on the team... and they still made it a 7 point game half way through the 4th qtr. The Browns were heavy favorites against a weaker team than Buffalo and got their doors blown off.

@wjmoore17
@wjmoore17 7 ай бұрын
Playoff records aren't identical. Cower was 12-9 while Tomlin is 8-10. Tomlin won the division 8 times opposed to Cowher's 7, but Cowher advanced to the AFC Championship six times while Tomlin has only seen three appearances.
@taylorgang209
@taylorgang209 7 ай бұрын
Yea not completely identical, But similar. Cowher is 2-5 in AFC Championship games. Tomlin is 2-3. Both 1 super bowl, 1 super bowl loss. Cowher 10 playoff appearances, Tomlin 11. Cowher 9 10 or more win seasons, Tomlin 10. Tomlin’s lowest draft pick is 15, without it being a trade. No doubt Cowher has been slightly more successful in playoffs, and this is no diss to Cowher just making the case for Tomlin.

@kevinbarbour2771 7 ай бұрын
@taylorgang209 Cowher was only with the team 15 years and was gone one year after a Super Bowl victory. That 2006 season saw quite a bit of talk about him being done and I recall it a few time over his tenure. Also a note, he only had 3 seasons with Ben and one was '06 after the bike wreck. Cowher had 8 division title Tomlin has 7, Cowher won in the playoffs with 5 different starting QBs, coach Tomlin has done it with one but he hasn't had but two chances to do it without him. This isn't to knock coach Tomlin, I think he leans too hard on emotions to get the team up for a game but I'm not looking for his head. Just saying that this year, with Belichick, Vrabel, maybe Carrol, etc out there you don't have the "who would you replace him with" kind of questions that you normally would. That's why there's talk, but Cowher got it too. The big problems for Tomlin are the long playoff win drought, available options, the sense that he blew his shot with the "Killer B's" era, and several chaotic years inside the locker room.

I think every team has a period where performance and outcome dips. I think the Steelers are such a solid organization and Tomlin's so good that a period when they should be tanking is instead a mediocre period of time. I imagine replacing Tomlin would show Steelers fans what it's really like to have a horrific, losing season. Instead of losing in the playoffs, its a "win 3 games" kind of season. Letting go of Tomlin would be a huge mistake, and I hope ownership doesn't listen to online angst about replacing him. I think Steelers fans have a right to be upset right now. Replacing Tomlin would not help.

It's easy to speak in hypotheticals, but if Tomlin were to leave, the Steelers would still be making solid choices. They know what it takes to build a competitive team. Let's not act like they'd be hiring someone like Hugh Jackson to be the next HC. To say they would be terrible without Tomlin is an incredibly dumb statement, because the same thing was said when Cowher's days as HC were coming to an end. The Steelers will always be competitive because it's been engrained in their DNA for 50+ years.

Ok… I go back 53 years. I watched Swann put on the Greatest Show ever in Super Bowl X. I watched the 70’s greats retire one by one and realized that a changing of the guard was in front of me. I watched as Noll slowly come to terms with the fact that he needed to hang it up. Landry had done so a few seasons earlier. We all know what Cowher did and how he was chosen. Now…Cowher decides his family is more important…he walks…knowing that the next Head Coach is already in the building. The job was either going to Ken Whiz or Russ Grimm. Whiz took the head job in Az…and Russ was simply waiting to be announced. All the sudden Tomlin was given the job…but every Steeler fan knew that Grimm was passed over for other reasons. How could the creators of The Rooney Rule not get absolutely destroyed in other NFL team offices when they were choosing only their 3rd Head coach in 38 years??? IM NOT RACIST…but I think they were backed into a corner by a rule they created. You can say what you want about the success of the Tomlin tenure. Keep these facts in mind. He inherited a HOF Defensive Coordinator…and a very capable QB…and what will probably end up being 4-5 more HOF’ers from that Steeler team of 2007-2012 Troy is already in. Ben is definitely going in. Now possibly Harrison, Hampton, Ward, and Pouncey will be considered. With the exception of Pouncey…these are all Cowher’s players. When did LeBeau leave??? 2014 🤔🤔🤔??? Troy was gone, Hines was gone. Hampton was gone, yet…Tomlin had the Killer B’s. The 3 best Offensive Players at their positions…during that period of time. They were never successful. I’m sorry but I think Russ Grimm got cheated out of being a Hall Of Fame coach in Pittsburgh. It has left a bad taste in my mouth for 17 years. You guys talk of his non losing streak but what about his other accomplishments??? Worst coaching record against below 0.500 teams for a coach with over 200 games. The 103 year distinction of losing back to back games…AT HOME…to teams 8 games under 0.500. There are other negative accomplishments but this post is long enough. He’s never gonna win or even sniff another Championship. Period

Tomlin eventually saw the other side when he made the change to Mason Rudolph but didn't know how to go forward. If you truly believe in competition breeding better results, then you yourself must also do the same. You must be challenged with criticism and getting better advice on what to do. Art Rooney II has the majority say on who will be the OC. Because he wants Steelers to get back to being a ground and pound Run & Defense team. Tradition. Who do you think promoted/hired Canada?
@librasRgreat
@librasRgreat 7 ай бұрын
I don't know if he promoted Canada because that was Tomlin's guy also. But Art the II definitely stated for the record in a television interview that he wants the Steelers to run the ball because that's "Steelers football" 🙄. I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers and acknowledges this. So imo Art is part of the problem with the stuck Steelers, the slow-to-change Steelers, the western pa nostalgia disease of a mentality that while appreciated sometimes can also keep you stuck in your ways and not for the better
@mc1993
@mc1993 7 ай бұрын
@@librasRgreat I'm also glad someone also remembers! Rooney said that a few times over the years. During Cowher's era too. Cowher brought in all his staff, OC was Ron Erhardt and used Erhardt-Perkins system. When Tomlin took over and Bruce Arians was promoted to OC, he installed Air Coryell he used as OC in Cleveland, we got to 2 more SB, got Ben to become the gunslinger, and gone. Haley promoted and right back to the Erhardt-Perkins system, but Ben was uncaged by then. Why would Tomlin promote Matt, whose system was like oil and water to Big Ben? Remember the leak that it was Art who fired him, the implication being, you hired him you fire him. I think it's a Rooney thing. Loyalty and Tradition. Also, in Tomlin's interview, they asked him if he was going to choose the OC (from outside), and he responded, 'No, Art Rooney, Omar Kahn, and I will be in on the process.' We will know when they land an OC. If he'll be an innovator, or just another sock puppet.

All he has ever hired was JV level coordinators thats why none of his coordinators have ever left the Steelers to become a HC somewhere else. Tomlin has no coaching tree for a 17 year HC for one team that is kind of crazy. If they are not going to upgrade the QB position through free agency there must be a legit open competition for QB1 and that's if they can get Mason back. Lastly he needs to overall upgrade his coaching staff he has one of the smallest staffs on the league.
