I've ridden walkers in Western disciplines. They can go for hours in the arena and not look like this. In fact I've never seen a horse show the whites of it's eyes while simply working. THESE HORSES look absolutely stressed and miserable!

Big Lickers who defend Big Lick remind me of abusive parents before the Child Endangerment Act: "he fell down the stairs, she ran into a door, if you had kids you'd know how clumsy they are." It doesn't take a horse expert to see fear and pain in an animal. This behavior is the very reason we need laws to protect those who are weaker, children, animals, from people who see no wrong in their cruelty. Please contact USDA Administrator Kevin Shea urging him to enforce the 2017 rule to end Big Lick animal cruelty by enforcing removal of pads and chains.

The riders (who cares really?) don’t look happy. What’s really sad is these beautiful horses will never know a pleasure rider out in the great outdoors, will never run in a pasture and kick up their hoofs or race across a pasture, just being happy…..😢😢😢 this must be stopped!

My cousin has owned and bred Tennessee Walkers and their natural gaits with a flat shoe are beautiful. Big Lick is more side show circus act. It should go away like those have.

Vile, yes. Medieval? No. In the Middle Ages, horses were needed to get from one point to another, pull wagons or win wars. No way they could have achieved that with crippling equipment and bad riders.

There are ways to TRAIN a horse to have the high leg action without pads and chains, these big lick "trainers" are just too lazy.

For sure. But it takes years. And real effort and skill to achieve a similar effect. It will look different though, because you train a horse to get strong enough to shift more of its weight towards the rear. You will not achieve that spider or duck-like gait though. More something akin to the TWH's natural gait, albeit more gymnastizised and with a bit higher front leg action.

@@billygoboy48 Hi I recently found a USDA Disqualification and Civil penalty list under the HPA, current as of November 2022. Martha Milligan was top the list with a 7,700 fine and it was saying she was currently disqualified from any form of showing. Has she only recently been banned?

There is a man with a white hat and navy suit with a sorrel that looks to be hardly high stepping. I figure almost no pads or non. That should be highlighted. The horse’s tail did not look altered either. For horses sake it would be better to point out what’s right, not that there is a lot. Easier to adjust things than totally trash.

I find it kind of disappointing that you claim to know Jesus, but don’t think He would disapprove? It’s facts that it destroys their bodies, they almost all end up severely arthritic and with DSLD, and we will not even mention the horrendous torture most go through to learn what is NOT a natural gait. I want to be able to stand before my Lord and not have cruelty and abuse hanging over my head. I do not believe we have long left, I just hope you step back and truly look at what the sport is about. I did a lot of things as a young person.. I learned better and stopped. I do not have ANYTHING to do with Big lick anymore, or Barrel Racing or Eventing, I have done it all and choose not to do any of it anymore.
