Rich Goldfarb - The growth of Alaska and spatial-temporal evolution of its mineral systems

Alaska comprises the northwestern edge of the North American Cordilleran orogen. It is the product of the amalgamation of a series of terrines, arcs, microcontinents, and basins during the past 150 million years. However, it contains mineral deposits that are as old as Neoproterozoic and which formed in regions far away from present-day Alaska. This week's geohug session with Richard Goldfarb will be a synthesis of how active continental margins grow through complex geologic histories to form world-class mineral systems such as those characterizing Red Dog, Fort Knox, Pogo, Pebble, and Alaska-Juneau/Treadwell/Kensington. An understanding of continental margin metallogeny in such a relatively young tectonic setting allows for an improved prediction of the spatial distribution of ores elsewhere on our planet that have been overprinted by tectonic events over much longer periods of geological time.

I’ve worked on and studied the “VMS” deposits of SE Alaska and you’d have to go through a ton of mental gymnastics to interpret them as anything other than orogenic replacement deposits.
