My son is dyslexic and has struggled with it all his life. We had to have him privately diagnosed when he was 6yo, and afterwards he said to me, "well mum, at least I now know why I find reading so difficult as everything jumps about!". Broke my heart into tiny pieces knowing that he would struggle as, outside of that, he is so intelligent. However, now, he is truly creative, a great son and such a kind/beautiful person with a high level of integrity. I am an extremely proud mum.

I loved arithmetic but algebraic formulae was something else. First of all it took me a terribly long time to get my head around the concept of variables during a school physics lesson. Then the maths formulae’s totally flummoxed me. I learned later in life what my main issue was- first principles. I simply cracked when I was told to use a formulae without learning how it was derived and why we just use it. This is how my brain works, I needed to know the how, why and where formulae came about otherwise the brain will shut down and not show interest in using something that I don’t know its origin and purpose. It’s a miracle that I gained qualifications in science and a Masters degree in Engineering in the end.

@@Pulsonar I can relate. Basic math I can do. Ppl tend to think it means I see the numbers backwards it's definitely not that way for me it's the steps & other variables my brain will continue to confuse & not process properly lol. I'm a young millennial and I have dyslexia and everyone knew something was wrong but even still in my day there wasn't really a plan or recognition of it. It was Richard Branson talking about it on TV that made everything click for me one day. I really struggled in school despite a strong work ethic and everything changed after I heard him talk about it and realized that's what was wrong. Knowing what the problem is alone took away a lot of the stress and anxiety and allowed me to then find ways to deal with it.
@trustworthyjane52434 ай бұрын
This is a great thing he is doing, personally I would have like him create or give to elementary schools specifically to help children with dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia. My son was diagnosed with dyslexia, dysgraphia, the school never tested him or acknowledged that he had it unless the school tested him for it and they didn't have any programs at the school to test for it. I had to take him to a private agency to have him diagnosed, then in order for him to get treatment I would have had to pay out of pocket and drive to the next town over which was miles away with no transportation to take him. He never got the help he needed, and he only got to a grade 6 level.
@GeekGamer6664 ай бұрын
Thing is he could have done that and helped kids in one area, the UK perhaps, but with this he gives access to information to help dyslexic people of all ages anywhere that they can get access to the internet. The solution to improving access to diagnosis and supports is to get people motivated and organised to put pressure on your government representatives to fix the problems. If Branson paid for it, it would be a band aid until the money ran out. If the government fixes the problems in the system it's a cure.
@trustworthyjane52434 ай бұрын
@@GeekGamer666 Please! Since when does a government care about what's best for it's people or the people of the world, so leaving it up to the government to take care of diagnoses and treatments is non sense, otherwise they would have done it by now, because people have and have been trying to get the government/educational systems to listen do something about these learning disabilities and they don't do anything about it. What he is doing is opening a University from what I am understanding, which is NOT for people of all ages, that is just helping a select few that have already been diagnosed and treated get more education.

I sit and do school with my son who has dyslexia, we started when covid hit. He was at the end of grade 5, then we continued because he finally could keep up with the class and there was a lot of support to read to him and scribe for him. He needed, and still does, to have an educational support worker. Something the Canadian government cut many years ago. He needs prompting, help with sentence formation on his ideas, extra explanation to understand tasks or questions, time management, constant advocacy on his behalf with school and teachers to ensure his needs are met and respected. He is now in grade 10 and still wanting to excellent. I'm very proud of him, but I stress about his future.
