This is exactly the reason why I think most memorization of most organic and inorganic reaction is a waste of time. All we know is a certain chemical a reacts with B to give c and we are told exactly nothing about them, how they look etc.

Yesss couldn’t agree more. I think that was my problem in chemistry we took a lot of chemical reactions and they told us to just memorize it.

Yeah but it takes time to build the intuition and deeply understand those concepts. In the beginning you have to "memorize", it takes time until it clicks.

Yeah, if you try think deeper, you realise you actually don't know a thing about it, all you know is getting answer following a protocol.

Feynman mentioned that in another interview. When talking about this or that experiment etc. 😊

As an IMO gold medal winner, I am extremely annoyed when questions require you to know terminology instead of being an actual challenge. Imagine thinking that terminology is an important part of a subject. This is immediately debunked by just realising other languages exist. For anyone wondering, the IMO is the world's main math competition, and the questions can be understood by high-schoolers. Because they are the ones that compete.

OTOH, it is difficult to discuss something when the something has no name.
