+TheMusicOfToday I heard Robbie Krieger of the Doors play a $100 Yamaha acoustic for "Love me two times babe" and it sounded phenomenal and proved that in most cases we don't need a multi thousand dollar guitar but why not have 1, or 50 Les Pauls like Slash? Who cares? Do I have to be Mario Andretti to own a Ferrari? That's just ignorant and malignant thinking!

I went to kindergarten through high school with his sister. His father was my parents insurance man who never missed his daughters school events. Liked his family before I ever knew he acted. I sat next to Laura at graduation and Richard Gere was there to see her graduate. It was a few years later that I watched his movies. Big fan.

When I was a kid, the Sears catalog had a Silvertone f-hole acoustic guitar with case for about $40. When I ask my dad if I could get it, he said we'll get you a "good" guitar. So he took me to Yeager's on Eastern Ave. The salesman took us upstairs to the stock room and sold my dad the worst POS guitar you could imagine. I eventually got the Silvertone which I loved. Fast forward a number of years, decided to give the Silvertone to my young kids. They destroyed it in about two days. Lesson learned: if you want to give your child one of your nice old guitars, wait until he/she is about 60 years old.

Ever notice how all these very wealthy collectors says "the guitar spoke to me" so I aquired the piece. You never hear,"man that 78 Japanese LP Cortez copy spoke to me". That MIM Strat really sung so I knew I had to have it. I am torn betreen 2 emotion when watching these vids. On one hand its great the guitars are being preserved and one day after a long custody battle or reading of the will they will end up back in other's hands. But on the other its sad to see what is essentially a guitar graveyard where they spend their lives in the dark. I have around 50 and display as many as possible and try to play each at least a few times a year.

When they say "there is no right way to play guitar" I was at first thinking it was a bullshit statement. Of course there is a right way and a wrong way to play. I have had lessons at an early age and was all the time being corrected by my teacher. But as I grew older, I began to realize that as long as the notes come out and it sounds musical, he is right. There really is no wrong way to play. Like playing golf. If the ball goes far and straight, who cares what the swing looks like? Right?

+Charlie Foxtrot The 3rd... I liked your post because I am the same way but not . I had early guitar lessons and rebelled against every guitar teacher from 9 years old to about 15 ...I kept on teaching myself for many years until I decided was bottomed out and thought I needed professional direction. At 30 years old I found a guy who was 80 something years old and played in the big band era and took lessons again . For Gods sake he started me off with Mel Bay on first lesson ? So I told him next time I will come with my electric and amp and show his what Ive learned on my own . He told me after I played that " I think people would like to hear you play but you need to learn these things" ??? Things that made no sense to me. I just love to play the blues the way I love to play the blues and thats what makes me happy ...and thats what its all about .

You can dream and believe you can do it yourself .....but if the greatest (C.Christian ,Django,Wes,) were widely self taught ,they were first Musical genius ! .....and learn (easily) from a very accurate and "top" environment. Exceptions are aside the rule and are built to carry on ....before the first step! I never met good ones really and completly self-taught !

I like to consider them semi-vintage. It depends on how old you are. Im only 18, so the guitars I use are twice as old as I am, so they are vintage to me...but to other people who are in their 40s+ then no, they are not vintage. I personally dont like modern guitars. I cant even play my new custom before of how bland it sounds for its huge price tag. I have lots of regret buying...but yet I spent even more for my 25/50 and I have 0 regret on that guitar. One can totally understand the love of finding and collecting great guitars. The rich collect rare cars, paintings etc, etc and we all drool at their wealth and good fortune but there is something really sad about the idea of these instruments living in boxes and never being played by the owner who sought them out. They were made to be played often and the more you do the better they get.

Richard Gere was the second child (of five) of a homemaker and an insurance salesman. He probably enjoyed a childhood where money didn't abound. I can relate to that. My parents weren't rich either, and it probably influenced my choice for playing the guitar rather than the piano or the violin. The guitar has always been a cheap instrument, and people taught themselves to play so you didn't need big money for weekly expensive lessons. Like Richard, I have become better off than my parents (god bless). And then it's pretty hard to resist the temptation to buy those guitars you never held in your hands - let alone owned - when you were a kid. I am sure that Richard's guitar skills do not surpass his purchase power. In other words: he is not a good enough guitar player to truly enjoy the fabulous qualities of the guitars he has bought. That's why he doesn't play the guitars himself in the above video clip. I make a bit less money than Richard Gere does :-) so I have a different strategy. Today's fine guitars are so cheap! So I buy the best budget guitars of certain types. My fleat consists of one good Fender strat, one seventies' Les Paul copy by Ibanez, a particularly good twelve-string and one fabulous classical guitar both of Japanese 1960's descent, a recent Ibanez Artcore jazz-box, a second-hand Takamine EN-30c with a wide neck, and a fake Gretsch White Falcon that looks as good as it plays. I really don't need a trainload of expensive antique guitars that I wouldn't dare touch. I don't want to turn my home into a guitar gallery. I want to play! So while Richard Gere is looking for those famous brands an renowned models and parks them in his collection, I have a large variety of guitars at my disposal near my couch, and I'm getting better and better playing every day. That's what guitars are made for. For playing. Not for collecting.

@TheRealCaptainFreedom
@TheRealCaptainFreedom 9 жыл бұрын
The craftsmanship is mostly equivalent, but not the wood. When you buy a new American Gibson or Fender, you are mostly paying for name brand recognition. Same as retards who blow $300 for Nike sneakers. Are they better than other sneakers? No. In fact, they are made in the same Southeast Asian sweatshops by the same slaves as other shoes. But I do think that the craftsmanship seen in older Gibsons and Fenders is superior to most of what we see from them today.
@101xaplax101
@101xaplax101 9 жыл бұрын
i agree w everything that you say except the comment about the wood. they use basswood, ash, and alder because they are inexpensive, easy to dry out and readily available. there is a video of a fender tech on youtube talking about it. it has nothing to do with tone. they use the exact same wood on the squires as they do the $5000 strats. the machines have been made on CNC machines since the 60's. i have a $2500 guitar that has the same basswood that is used in my squire
@TheRealCaptainFreedom
@TheRealCaptainFreedom 9 жыл бұрын
first It has nothing to do with tone of course, but for the unpainted guitars that show off the wood, they use better wood. Among the painted Fenders and Strats, >75% of them have mistakes that are filled in with Bond-O. They might use the same kinds of wood, but not the same quality. I stand by my comment. I just did a bunch of sanding and painting of wood. Same kind (species) of wood, but each individual piece of lumber was different. Some pieces were so knotty that they couldn't be used (for the porch ceiling), but if I had been making a painted guitar, I could have filled in the knots and used them.

if it doesn't affect tone then who cares? it matters not. there is a blind study on youtube where the guy plays guitars made of various woods and one of the best sounding ones is revealed in the end to be a concrete block!!!

Like a lot of people on this comments chain, I didn't know that Richard Gere was so interested in guitars. I did think he'd played trumpet as his use of the instrument in The Cotton Club seemed too good to be just acting. Anyway, fair play to him for spending his money on his passion. I come from the Land of Putting People in their Place (the U.K.) where "getting above your station" is torn down, but I can't see what's wrong with someone spending money on making themselves happy (unless its harmful to themselves or others). I'm not a talented guitarist, although I enjoy playing, but probably have a lot better collection of guitars than I warrant (from a skill point of view), but hey, I'm hitting my wallet not anything else.

This was prepratory to him auctioning these guitars for CHARITY. I have personally seen some of his stuff. They were not great looking pieces but were beautiful playing guitars. When he was talking to GE about the D'Angelico guitar and mentioned D'Aquisto so quickly. I wager there are few people on this site that know who either are or their relationship. I have a lot of respect for this guy. No scandal and obviously a serious hobbiest. With a lot of disposable income. More power to him.

Jesus, haha I was thinking exactly the same lol This is what's wrong with these commercial hollywood shit actors who think they are artists. While real musicians are playing 100$ guitars and making them sound like heaven this spoiled wannabe is spending most of his time and money locking great guitars in a closet. What a fucked up thing to do against real arts...

Wow! This is bitter lol. Hopefully when you have earned the money it takes to indulge your passions and take part preserving the history and legacy of that passion, some pretentious child won't cast aspersions on you because they feel entitled to something they have not earned.

realmatic10 No, you're the only one who sounds bitter. Try to make a compelling comment about the video if your so impressed instead of commenting about me. That may take a bit of brain power though. I don't care how many guitars Richard Gere buys. My comment was that he doesn't seem to be able to or want to play them. Learn to read before trolling.

mcigraff Will do. This is a conversation I'm having with Rod Fish on a different post on this video. Even though it is quite beneath me, as this statement "My comment was that he doesn't seem to be able to or want to play them." Is the definition of pretentious. You have no reason to believe this other than your own fallacious, unfounded, preconceived notions about his intent. :) Rod Fish. "Do the world a favour and donate these guitars to real players... not that they would care which guitar they are playing but at least they would be making a sound... to other people. Is locking guitars in a silent room and having someone else play them once a year "love for the instrument"???" Me. "Yes, give them to people so they can potentially lose, misuse, and smash them. The logic you use is ridiculous. "not that they would care which guitar they are playing" So, he should give them to people who won't understand or be thankful for the piece of history they have in their hand? I have a great idea. Lets just give the remaining Stradivarius violins to just anybody who plays on a daily basis, even though they don't care what kind of violin they use. Because hey, they will actually use them. "Is locking guitars in a silent room and having someone else play them once a year "love for the instrument"?" It's called preserving history. How much a man chooses to use his rightful property is not relevant to you whatsoever. When he dies there will be a great collection of guitars for people to learn about and to admire. If you have enough money to afford these types of instruments, you can only get them from people that collect like this. I swear to god. Do people like you even think about how illogical what you're saying is before you vomit it into a public forum? If you don't mind what kind of guitar you're using, buy a cheap one. If you care about preserving history and you have the money to buy the best, buy what you like. It's very simple." Rod Fish "You were making a good point and convincing me of your idea until your sarcasm made you sound a little immature... but you are right... it doesn't mean I am wrong. I've heard of many musicians, mostly violinists, who have received their Stradivarius FOR FREE, from some millionaire or institution. So somebody was kind harted enough to recognize great talent and provide the artist with the instrument. I don't think it's very hard these days to find guitarists worthy of getting these guitars for free... I could name a few. And he doesn't NEED the money, and he doesn't PLAY the guitar and he SAYS he likes music too much... maybe even more on a record than live, from what it looks like... When I said "not that they would care which guitar they play" I was referring specifically to SRV, which played a $50 pawn shop strat he got from his wife every time he played lenny and it made him sound better or the same as with the famous pimped fender american SRV strat. Having a great guitar helps, he gets a reliable instrument and money from endorsements and everybody is happy... but take that guitar away and he will find a way to play a wire nailed in a block of wood and make it sound better then the soundless masterpieces of richard gere... Also, if there is any thing that can be passed down by history from those guitars is the feeling in it, because the technology is already improved and we already know what makes for good wood so there's no point in "preserving history". They lost that feeling a long time ago, now they're just a great picture of great guitars that once got to sit on great guitarists laps. he is making investments with these guitars, IMO... and he is doing really well, they get more expensive every day..." Me "You were making a good point and convincing me of your idea until your sarcasm made you sound a little immature" The sarcasm was a necessary analogical gesture to point out the ridiculous nature of your logic. "I've heard of many musicians, mostly violinists, who have received their Stradivarius FOR FREE" I'm sorry, but I'm going to need a citation for this. I'll just assume there is some truth to it for the sake of the debate. That being said. I highly doubt these instruments were given to those people to keep, perhaps loaned, but certainly not given. "When I said "not that they would care which guitar they play" I was referring specifically to SRV, which played a $50 pawn shop strat he got from his wife every time he played lenny and it made him sound better or the same as with the famous pimped fender american SRV strat. Having a great guitar helps, he gets a reliable instrument and money from endorsements and everybody is happy" This is a great anecdotal example to clarify your point...But it is not analogues to the conversation. In this analogy the guitar was bought for him by somebody who had great incentive to give the gift. The personal happiness it gave her to see somebody she knew and loved take it and express themselves. I could also make the assumption under the sufficient condition that, if his wife had not bought it for him, it is very likely that he would have played different guitars. But that guitar meant something to him because of the history that was held within the guitar, not the instrument itself. Something Gere speaks of very much in this video. "Also, if there is any thing that can be passed down by history from those guitars is the feeling in it, because the technology is already improved and we already know what makes for good wood so there's no point in "preserving history"." This is illogical. It basically diminishes the value of any nostalgic emotion and historical value attached to an object. It goes "We know how to make these things now, so there's no point in preserving them anymore." The fallacy of that is that it is thanks to collectors (Like Gere) or by sheer accident that these discoveries were made possible. I would rather depend on preservation teaching us about the past than fate my friend. "he is making investments with these guitars, IMO... and he is doing really well, they get more expensive every day..." Be honest. Do you truly believe this? Do actually believe that Richard Gere is just biding his time to wait for the right moment to sell them at huge profits? He's got to be 65+ years old, and you are making one hell of an assumption that I personally feel is only rooted in your mind. Perhaps you are projecting your own intent if you were in the situation, other than his intent. I just see no reason why you would think this based on this interview, or any other information you have received about this particular individual for that matter. In short, I'm sorry if my sarcasm offended you friend. I would only hope that by the time you have made it this far into my comment that you have realized how unfounded your assumptions/accusations are, and how fallacious the logic you have built your opinions on truly is." TL:DR version. You are a simpleton. You have no idea what you are even talking about, and are exactly what you are accusing him of being. Not based on my assumption of your intent, but by your own very words. And the trolling accusation gave me a good laugh. I forgot that this is the internet and that any dissenting opinion is automatically trolling. Your type is so sad haha. ;)

It's a strange sort of resentment that some people carry about what other people have or how they come to possess certain things. A lot of people really believe all guitars are the same. They simply just don't care to know much more (and that's ok) Some people know different and really get into it. This guy just happens to be a successful actor and is able to collect what he likes. I just dig that he likes them and gets them. If you earn your pay to get what you want then your living right.

Hanging behind that Gibson L4 circa 1918 is a 1950s Gibson ES 225 in Tobacco burst with 2 dog eared P 90 pick ups. I had that guitar at one time, a 1959 I bought in a pawn shop for $300.00 WITH the original case! I sold it in the mid 80s for $350.00. It would be worth THOUSANDS now! But I'd rather just have the guitar.

And they do hold value. The guitars you buy today INSTANTLY drop in value. My silverburst I paid 3636 for...and now I cant sell it for even 2400 still in BRAND NEW condition. Buy a 1977 silverburst for 3000...you can sell it for 3000 (most likely more though) Vintage isnt right for everyone... its an acquired taste of hearing.... in other words, if you are a shredder, HELL NO vintage is not for you. If you have class and like your cleans, there isnt any other guitar you should plya. Norlin

When I was 28 I went to a music shop to pawn a '76 Les Paul Deluxe. Figuring I would get about $800 as a loan. When I went in I played a Tele for a bit and a mother and son, about 16, came in. After they asked me about guitars and I played a few to show the young chap about different guitar and amp styles I took a liking to the son. After little thought I sold my guitar to him (his mother paid me) for $800. I don't regret it, as a matter of fact it made me feel quite good. That axe had character

The most interesting thing I think of when I look at my guitars is, where will they be after I pass? Who will hold them, and play them regularly just as I did? Today, "Vintage" guitars are usually only about 60 years or younger. I'm only 15 right now, but when I reach an old age, I am going to head down to a music store, find a kid with hunger, passion, and talent just as I have. And give him one of my guitars. It's better then money, knowing it is in good hands and is on another journey.

Dan Courtenay recalls that in about 1990 a friend informed him of a classified in the New York Times advertising auctions. ...among the used furniture (was) some equipment belonging to the late Jamaican Reggae star Peter Tosh. Included in the lot was an electric guitar. It was hard to believe this was his famous double-cut Les Paul TV Special but of course I was going to find out. The lot that contained Tosh's guitar, also contained a road case with his name on it
