Let's not forget that the big guitar sound comes from both Richard AND Paul. Paul's guitar sound is slightly different to Richard's, but both have a big sound. I hear of a lot of people that get frustrated with the Rammfire program because they're not getting the Rammstein sound they hear on the records or live. That's because it's based only on Richard's sound.
@frantisekvtelensky8207 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it is. U know, it's funny, how people think, that Rammfire will make THAT R+ sound. 'Cause not only that Rammstein uses many post production arrangements in studio (changes EQ etc.), but also many different amps and settings. Many EXPENSIVE amps (Mesa, Engl, Soldano, Bogner etc.). Live situation is basically only combination of Richard's Mesa and Paul's Engl sounds. And of course it sounds different than on studio records. Rammfire it's only for catching Richard's ideas, maybe demos, not for real recording situations. :)
@Corvid7 жыл бұрын
VERY true! Richard doesn't have the most complex sound at all equipment wise... it's literally a Dual Rectifier, and very little else on plenty of songs. Paul's sound is the harder part... Paul adds the aggressive industrial sound, which is extremely hard to do well. Dealing with massive amounts of treble and carefully chosen gain settings isn't easy at all... even using the same equipment as he used in the early days (Tech21 SansAmp PSA-1 through a power amp and cab) you realise just how much tweaking and careful processing is needed to blend well with Richard's tone. The biggest thing people forget when trying to imitate the Rammstein studio sound is how much work and expertise goes into recording the guitars. Even Herzeleid took 3 months to record... that's 4 weeks SOLID recording guitars. Brand new strings on a daily basis, perfect instrument setup, and seriously intense practice. The amp settings will be crafted to perfection, the cabinet will be in the perfect spot of the best room they have, the mic position will be agonised over... and the mic preamp will cost more than most people's instruments by a factor of ten. That's before the sound is even recorded! When most people record guitar, they're done at this stage... but for Rammstein it means days of EQ (probably the most important aspect of all), compression, and tweaking with distortion, saturation, additional effects, as well as layering the guitars. Contrary to popular belief, Rammstein do NOT layer their guitars as much as you'd think. Yes they did use crazy layering for Links 2-3-4, but that's really audible, and worked for the song. Most other songs won't use more than 6 takes, panned fairly hard left and right (so much closer to three takes layered). If you want to sound like Rammstein, you have to absolutely obsess over skill and technique, and learn how to record, produce and mix like a professional. Having the right gear will get you perhaps 20% of the way there, but the vast majority of their guitar sound is expert recording and production. Live, not too difficult in some ways, because you can only do so much production... but even Rammstein have to work extremely hard to get their guitars sounding good live... once you set the bar that high in studio, pulling it off live becomes a mammoth task. Compare that to someone like Iron Maiden, who basically just play live in the studio... they get it easy on stage, because the album is recorded much like a live show!

Does Paul play Engls live now? Last time I heard about his rig Jacob hellner was talking about him only using the Sans amp. Atleast for Ich tu dir weh. I know Richard uses Kemper and Blackstar live these days
@frantisekvtelensky8207 жыл бұрын
I think, that both use Kemper on tour now. It's easier way fot them, cuz tube amps are still fragile. But don't know, cuz info about Paul's rig is very hard to find. Same with Oli. :)
@Corvid7 жыл бұрын
Where did you hear about the Kemper rig? Makes sense to be honest, even seriously crazy effects guys like Matt and Chris from Muse are using Kemper! Last I saw, Paul was using AxeFx, and Richard had his trademark wall of Triple Rectifiers! Paul stopped using the SansAmp live years ago, probably after discovering new amps he liked after Sehnsucht (he has a fondness for the Bogner Uberschall, I can see why after trying one!). The SansAmp is absolutely all over Herzeleid and Sehnsucht, that unit is basically tinned Landers! Pain too, Peter Tagtgren uses it a lot with Pain.
@PhilipRandall198512 жыл бұрын
Richard's Holy Grail of amp is a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier(Revision C) only 500 were made sometime in the ninties but thats is actual album sound he doesn't use it on the road but the Rammfire is based on that amp, the front panel is a mirror and with a black diamond palte cover so if you want that sound if you run into to one BUY IT!!!
@CodenameSpecter12 жыл бұрын
Just to make this clear: the Drop D guitar with the low C is not Drop C. The exact tuning is DADGCE. It is used in Rammlied during both verses that start with "Manche führen, manche folgen"

@Waidmann74 Its for the detune breakdown during Rammlied when Till starts with EIN WEG, EIN ZIEL, EIN MOTIV! part. From what I've observed, the main riff of the song is played in 2 keys, Richard plays in drop D and Paul plays in Drop C, but Richard needs the detune for that part before the final Chorus/outro.
@Max_945 жыл бұрын
Nowadays Richard still uses the rectifier in studio but Kemper live, Paul uses his signature sansamp pl1 in studio and live.
@jyd595 жыл бұрын
So Kruspe uses Mesa Dual Recs. Modern channel most likely but not touched upon. How much gain, tone settings, not mentioned. Otherwise a great touring rig-it's nice when you have a crew of people to carry and work your stuff without you having to carry it! Just fyi, Petrucci uses wireless into Dunlop Wah into a pedal tray into Mesa Triaxis into AxeFX into 2 Mesa Stereo Simulclass2:90 power amps...then into 2 pairs of 1x12 Recitifier cabs. One pair for him onstage as monitors, one pair backstage miked into the PA.
@Brottuss12 жыл бұрын
because if your guitar, or pedal, or amp have a problem, you need an instant back up for everything. everything is plugged into a processor than they control it with a pedal on the stage. so if something go wrong , they can switch stuff right away in the middle of a song.

@Waidmann74 its not drop C, with that guitar it was tuned to drop D but the one string was changed to a thick string and tuned to C for the clean section in Rammlied. But i think Paul takes that part now.

@themodernguitarist well you are right. But so many guys just need 1 or 2 amps like John 5. Slash had 6 on tour with Velvet Revolver and now he uses 2 Marshall heads. I just can't understand why so much amps when it could be much simpler

During the song Rammlied there is a clean section which uses drop C but the rest of the song is in drop D, so for live stuff, he just but on a thick string where the B would be and tuned it to C sooooooo its D A D G C E, used only for that song....however i think he no longer does that part of the song because when i saw it live i was searching for that string (thanks to this video ;D) but I think Paul does it now.
@acdccris Жыл бұрын
In all their live performances paul played in drop.C and Richard in Drop D, just in this case richard decided to play that part along with Paul, and added a high gauge string where the B string should be and its tuned to C but nowadays he doesnt,he plays the next sequence , where till stops singing.
@kimkikki8612 жыл бұрын
@tcelectronic check better,that guitar has a "extra low C" string as second one.so the 2nd and 6th strings have same gauge.

@bigrock007 I guess its just because its the only way they could get Rammstein's trademark wall-of-Dual-Recto sound while playing live. I heard Richard using the Rammfire plugin for a Native Electronics interview. Thats emulating probably 1 or 2 amps at once. Didn't sound like that powerful, crushing sound that RIchard and Paul are known for.
@Relentless_lel13 жыл бұрын
@rammsteinvideos101 nobody turns stagevolume louder that necessary ... he sure uses his two mesa for his monitoring and two as backup as the guy in the video said. but you really dont need 6. one or two for sound and one backup is more than enough. since you can get a better sound with an Axe Fx for 1500 dollar. the main reason that he has 6 is apparantly because he can. they only use clean, distorted and a bit reverb for stuff and he uses a rig that is heavily oversized for its usage.

Yeah, I know about the blackface Dual Rectos. They're supposed to be closer to sounding like a Soldano and have a lot less fizz compared to the later 2CH/3CH Recto's. And I tried to Rammfire plugin, and in my opinion, it doesn't really sound that good. Compared to an early Recto, I hear nothing similar.

Helgen Starrick Backups in case an amp goes down. Rammstein tour relentlessly so this is why it is always good to have Backups. Same with guitars, I mean Rammstein only uses 2 Tunings that I am aware of and if you break a string live then you will have a backup guitar already strung and tuned. Backups are great. P.S. Mesa is Richard's sound so they are all tweaked the same plus Rammstein plays Arena shows and sometimes you need more than one or two amps to occupy all that space in the room.
