It's a shame Richard didn't keep writing these short stories. His was some of the best ever written.

I first saw "Duel" back in 1974 and as I started to watch the movie, I was told that some scenes had been filmed in the Soledad Canyon Area, which in 1974, the Soledad Canyon Area is where I was residing in with my Dad. "Chuck's Cafe" Set for this movie was still a "movie set." I actually saw some of where "Duel" was made.

I was born and bred in Antelope Valley so we would take the SR 14 through Soledad Canyon to get to Santa Clarita, San Fernando, LA, Malibu, etc. I recognized all the mountains, flora, and terrain whenever we drove along the freeway. Hearing for the first time that it was all shot in Soledad near Palmdale in 1971 literally blew my mind! :)

This is one of the most heart-pounding, truly terrifying films I've ever seen. The great Richard Matheson could scare you like nobody else..the man was pure genius! I also have Mr Matheson's novelette of "Duel". And Spielberg brought it to film to perfection. Absolute brilliance! ❤

Amazing film, loved it for years! Penguin published a great 'Best of Richard Matheson' about five years ago, definitely worth a read if you enjoyed this (it does include Duel). There's also a Charles Beaumont volume too.

Richard, I have read and re-read this wonderfully scary tale over the many years I have had a copy of it! And, I do the the same with the movie. I still retain the wonder of reading this amazing tale for the first time. It's time I read it again! Thank you, sir!😀

Yes, Goldenberg's scoring is one of the most effective things about this classic movie.

I wonder why they used Bernard Herman's score from Cape Fear in the documentary?

Does anyone know the significance of the cars' licence plate *149* *PCE* ? I'm asking because I've seen other television series vehicles use that same plate ; I've also seen variations on it ( the A-TEAM van was "1PCE149" ) . In 'actuality' , a 1971 California plate would have its first letter as "C" , "D" , or "E" (e.g. , "149 *D* PG") .

I wonder if this is the same writer who authored short western novels. Interesting fact about this short story is that it appeared in an issue of Playboy Magazine too.
