You see how I re-chuck a roughed bowl for completion then remove the foot between centres. All the turning is in real time. Some of the sanding is at X 8 speed. The wood is box elder, the bowl 9"x3" / 230mm x 75mm.

Hi Richard, I read your books in 2005 and bought a Vicmarc VL100 based on your recommendation. It was my first lathe and Im just about to sell it after 18 years as I've upgraded to a second hand Vicmarc VL200. Your advice in the books was easy to follow and your designs are well thought out and 'look right'. Anyway, thanks for passing on your knowledge. 👍

I noticed that you seem to prefer a spindle gouge when turning bowls. Why is that? What angle do you prefer for spindle a bowl gouges. Always look forward to your videos. Thanks!
@RichardRaffanwoodturning
@RichardRaffanwoodturning Жыл бұрын
The spindle gouge is a less expensive tool and the savings never jam in the flute as they can in a bowl gouge when your hand is deflecting the shavings. The spindle gouge is also better for creating a corner between the foot/tenon and the bowl profile. Most of my gouges initially have a 45-degree bevel on the nose of the tool that steepens on the wings. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJiTmmVtjNqDjrM and kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5WlXq1sYpJ5d9U

Hi Richard. Just some general questions regarding sanding: 1) what is the average lathe speed you use for hand sanding; 2) what is the average lathe speed you use for power sanding; 3) what is the average speed you run the angle drill for power sanding? I’m just looking for a basic starting point/rule of thumb. I imagine there would be some variation depending on size and species? Thank you!
@RichardRaffanwoodturning
@RichardRaffanwoodturning 6 ай бұрын
There are so many variables it's difficult to produce basic rule for the speed at which to sand. If anything you'd be talking feet-per-second and then you'd need a variable speed lathe with a speedometer or speed-per-second readout. I rarely reduce the lathe speed to sand unless I can't feel the wood trying to drag the abrasive from my hand. I never vary the speed of the angle drill - it's always flat out. You need to feel the abrasive gripping the surface, not skidding about, so move it steadily across the surface without jabbing and varying the pressure.

Another great instruction video. Q: you expertly and quickly shave wood on the inside by using wood shavings in your hand to stabilize the edge, is there any possibility of burnishing the wood for novices who use shavings or a piece of leather to stabilize?

Hi Richard you use boiled linseed oil on your bowls is it food safe as the stuff here in the uk seems to have additives which make it unsafe Les.
@RichardRaffanwoodturning
@RichardRaffanwoodturning Жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the toxic additives in boiled linseed oil are in such small quantities that they're not worth worrying about. I'm also reliably informed that most finishes are food safe once cured. Utilitarian bowls and plates will be washed in hot water and detergent that will remove the finish. Thereafter use develops a patina as it does on a wooden chopping board.
