Yes. He really is a caring person from what I’ve read. One article said that he called one of the people in his workout club on Thanksgiving just to check on him, see how he was doing, and say hi to his mom. Another time Richard Simmons was out at a restaurant with someone. He got up to go to the bathroom, but he was gone for a long time. His friend got up to look for him and found him outside the restaurant holding a workout session with random passersby on the street. Imo he has such genuine care for the people around him. I’ve never seen the audience at Whose Line so excited to see any other guest walk onto the stage; not Miss America 2002 (Katie Harman), not Padma Lakshmi, not David Hasselhoff. He just engaged the audience immediately with his infectious enthusiasm.

I honestly think this is the funniest piece of television ever. People crying with laughter, falling out of chairs, standing ovation. Richard is such a legend.
@justincronkright502511 ай бұрын
It relies upon the largely U.S. aversion or reticence towards flamboyance of this sort... I guess a prudishness that has to pervade in order to get those sorts of reaction (being in an environment - i.e. on a comedy programme, where your inclusion in the flamboyant proceedings are unhinged/unlocked/unrestrained). But it works so well here thanks to him being also smart with how he knows he can 'play with the cast & prod the audience'. In other cases the funniest bits of television are like 'Q.I.'s Engineering - They Say of the Acropolis Where the Parthenon is'. Or ones could be witty versions, but that's far rarer since wit usually leaves less for improv or at least it's harder for it all to line up.

@StevenBara2 жыл бұрын
Can anyone explain that reference to me (non American)? Obviously I know these telescopes take coins to work. But why is that so funny? Can't be just that.
@@StevenBara it was funny because Richard Simmons’ behavior was so far outside the norm. He was always known as being super exuberant. I believe it was on this episode that he came out of the closet, and he did it by behaving in a way that showed he *really* likes men, and specifically, these men. I’ve never seen the Whose Line crew back down from anything, and they’ve played plenty of scenes where the characters are gay. They seemed a bit uncomfortable, though, because it seemed like Richard’s ardor was rocketing up. Colin was the calmest about it, though, and he played along with Richard by putting his head close to Richard’s as though looking through a telescope. As they spun around, though, you could see that Richard had opened his mouth as though he wanted to give Colin a big open mouth kiss. Colin handled it by calmly turning his face away and saying “this one wants more coins”. By doing so, Colin didn’t let Richard force him into anything that he didn’t feel comfortable doing, but he did handled it in a way so that it didn’t seem like he was rejecting or demeaning Richard - he kept the skit going. Strangely, despite all I’ve just said, it reminded me of an older dog playing with a puppy, and that’s why it was funny to me as an viewer. The fact that the whole crew broke character, though, showed that they were all surprised by Richard’s behavior and they were getting a little nervous how they would be able to interact with him when it was their turn.

This is one of the single greatest moments in television ever! And I love how when Colin realized Richard would be his jetski, he basically decided "screw it, I'm doing this right!"

he had no choice, you can't like.... ask the director mid-shoot to stop the skit because you're uncomfortable, it would mean the whole game would have to be scrapped or reshot, and time is money

It's one thing for the audience to laugh politely at your jokes, but the uproarious cathartic laughter here is in another league. This is one of the funniest TV scenes I've ever seen, up there with the famous Carol Burnett outtake and Norm Macdonald's Carrot Top joke.
