Richard Smallwood brings a different flavor to gospel music and that distinction is because he was classically trained as a musician and composer. At times, I can hear Mozart’s chord progressions and at times, I have been blessed to hear Bach and Beethoven. There aren’t many musicians who’ve been classically trained, let alone theologically trained, because there are many who are following the waves of apostasy. I don’t mean it to judge or to hurt, but many who write ‘gospel music’ aren’t reading their Bibles, they would rather follow trends than truth.

Mr. Smallwood's music helped build my personal Jesus relationship since Feb 6 1983. As a singer, radio announcer, writer, I've seen folks sing a different gospel & the produced fruit in their lives wasn't leading others to Jesus, but onto other "gods". 2 Chronicles 20:21-23 reminds me the psalmist/worshipers' assignment: A) ushering one, family, congregation & nation into the presence of God. B.) get ready for spiritual battle. The worshipers/praise singers (placed on the battle frontline) with God's word in songs (adding praise/worship) was their only weapon/protection. If the enemy sees fear/unbelief in your eyes, your were dead man walking waiting to get wounded or killed. Thank you for your insight. I needed it big time.

So accurately and truthfully commented, Jennifer! I hear Richard Smallwood's God-Inspired musical Gifting and classical training in the melodic phrasing, interludes, motifs, purposefully structured progressions and arrangements, etc., in many of his compositions. And yes,,,, there is a scarcity of Biblically trained 'Ministers of Music' / Christian musicians - artists today. However, The Lord Christ Jesus will never be left without a witness for HIS Glory and the true hearers' edification!
