Well, yeah. It's impossible to have security without the security software having access to what is running on your machine. At the same time, the stakes are much higher for the authors of such software, since they build their whole reputation on the trust of the user.

USA comes second right after China in terms of mass surveillance. And it may be even considered worse in some way, as there is not fully clear goal and directives regarding this mass surveillance in the USA, while in China, it's a lot clearer.

See also software of modern cars, that are connected. You don't know what it all does, and what data is send. Modern cars has a lot of sensors and camera's, and that data is send to the server of the manufacturer. Old cars can repaired by everyone. But what about modern cars, maybe some things can be repaired, but a lot not, especially the software is closed, and a lot of cars are connected. With an old car you was free, most modern cars you don't have control over the whole car, and you cannot controle the complete car. That is also with other software, if you don't have full control, you are not free.

A switched off phone cant triangulate with a cell tower. I'd also like to see any evidence relating to smart devices listening? Please post credible links. Not just scaremongering.

A switched off phone can actually do that, most of these devices aren't actually turned off completely. They often have the functionality to quickly call for emergency even if they are turned off. Which is in itself a good feature, but it requires the device to be connected to the cell network. Just look at how most smartphones are built in such a way that you can't take out the battery anymore. The whole point is that the evidence is hard to gather in an enviroment that is closed up. There is no way to tell what proprietary software does under the hood and even if it's not as bad as people imagine, it is still a good idea to limit your trust in it. If you use an Apple device connected to the internet, please check your network traffic, these devices do periodically connect to Apple servers. Sure, these packets might not carry any critical data, but you never know. I also remember from using an iPhone many years ago that my battery usage would randomly go up every so often without me doing anything and upon some testing it was very similar to the usage while you opened up your camera app and started recording. I am not drawing any conclusions from that because I don't have any more evidence, but at the same time I don't have the definitive evidence that nothing malicious was happening, and I prefer to assume the worst case scenario when it comes to things I can't trust. Such approach makes my life easier.

Stallman looks like he his pregnant. Really wish people would look after their health and appearance as much as they care about other stuff. Especially when they are role models. Its almost as if fat greybeards are looked up to?

Oh boy, his intellectual health is way better than any in his age! By the way he has got a cancer which is known since recently. If you want to research his role model, better read his texts than watch movies with him.

@@Eimrine Obesity has been linked to several common cancers including breast, colorectal, esophageal, kidney, gallbladder, uterine, pancreatic, and liver cancer. Obesity also increases the risk of dying from cancer and may influence the treatment choices. As for his books I have two. These are two totally different issues. I really am not sure how you are confusing them???
