Richard has been giving talks on non-duality since 2005 and has written four books about it, including the much-loved little classic ‘I Hope You Die Soon’. His fifth book, ‘Confessions of a Seeker’ is about his many years as a spiritual seeker but it also includes chapters on free will, consciousness and religion. It is sometimes extremely funny (one reader laughed so much she had to stop reading it in public places) and sometimes profoundly serious.

What is meant by feeling or seeming to be separate? What meant by me? Am I necessarily to be defined as separate? I’m just a part of what is happening so in what way does it make sense to say I am separate, other than just the way it seems in the use of language? In language things are distinguished but other than the language of ‘me and other stuff’, what is the separation? Can someone help me understand this please!?

When they say there’s no cause and effect do they just mean in terms of seeing liberation or is it a more general statement that all cause and effects are only apparent and have no basic reality? And when they say there’s no time is that also just in terms of the seeing of liberation or is it suggesting that time as in changing appearances is not real. It seems the phenomena or appearances do change and relate to each other in specific ordered ways as can be described. Is there an absolute denial of the reality of time and cause and effect here? In a sense I could agree that the infinite or absolute energy that is all apparent things is not time bound in any way and in itself it is timeless and formless. The absolute fact is of a singular energy that arises as all the phenomena or appearances. So, this apparent reality is not really material but there does seem to be some order to the appearances. Perhaps as the singular energy arises as appearances, that also involves some real ordering principle that leads to a real time and cause and effect in some way? Help me think about this! I wonder if they mean it is utterly seen that the appearances or phenomena are not the absolute reality. Nothing is really happening? Appearances are not really changing or ordered?

I guess you could say everything is permutations of pure immediacy. But since there’s nothing separate “against” which these permutations take place, they say it isn’t REALLY changing. Like...it is and it isn’t. I enjoy it posed as this question: does Spring “cause” Summer, or is there simply spring, and then simply summer? Nothing is moving from one state to another, because there are no objects separable from the changes they are undergoing, so to speak.
