"To get back what we lost in a field in France" suggests that though the language is English this song is about a German corporal, a German squaddie. A searing critique of how war affects little people but also evidence of Richard's overwhelming humanity.

@@SuperAllanjames - yes, Germany suffered terribly, but I'm still unsure as to whether RT is speaking about personal/individual loss or speaking, as you believe he might be, about the loss felt by countries. Who knows - maybe one day we can ask him?? Either way it's a beautiful song.
