a spinto tenor for the ages. his high voice might be the greatest of alltime. his vibrato is extraordinary as well. how a non-italian can master a language like he did is impressive as well

Tucker, without the mannerisms and exaggerated emoting that he often ventured into in later years, was a truly sensational singer.

+Leo Smart Well, this had enough of his"mannerisms and exaggerated emoting" but they were sincere, and the way he thought you expressed emotion-but ti was a sensational voice
@loniousmonk

Sincere is right. It is what makes every Tucker video I have seen so thrilling. He is absolutely uninhibited and yet his technique is so solid that he remains perfectly centered. His technique continued to solidify over the years which enabled him to express even more wildly. I read in his bio that near the end of his career when he was singing Canio that he actually frightened people because they were concerned that the intense emotion was "real." He did have a heart condition so that would obviously make people nervous. But I think it is a great achievement and act of selflessness that he insisted on singing with such abandon right til the very end.

more than any other tenor Tucker had to be seen to be truly appreciated. Not putting anyone else down, Domingo. Pavarotti et all were mostly less impressive on stage (exceptions Domingo's Otello debut at the Met, Pavarotti early days and in recital) TUCKER WAS MUCH MORE THAN WHAT YOU CAN SEE ON VIDEO. He was a 200% level actor/singer with a masculine voice that made your entire head vibrate

Lucky you that you were privledged to have heard him live. I have had to rely on his abundant discography. He and Bjoerling are my two favorite tenors. Tucker had a larger more dramatic voice with impeccable diction and style whereas Bjoerling had a certain sweetness of sound that was so unique.

To have perfect diction is to turn into a Giuseppe di Stefano, do you want that? This is SINGING, not screaming on pitch; in order to preserve the integrity of the legato line, one has to use indistinct/ambiguous consonants at times. Tucker's singing here is magnificent and the voice rich and powerful, listen to how released the sound is at 2:25.

Lanza certainly made an impact on the public because of his movie making&definetly attributed in making opera more popular.ML's quality of voice certainly ranks with great tenors such as Gigli,Di Stefano.Bjorling,Wunderlich&my favorite Spanish tenor Cortis. My father had an expression that use to annoy me at times."Sometimes God gives people bread that have no teeth"Perhaps this is a fitting expression for Mario, but I would rather believe that perhaps his ending was unfortunate for everyone.

@sugarbist There is a difference between speaking a language and singing the same language. I followed Tucker with the score twice and its right on. You cannot decide for a singer what accents to put on a text at best, if your his or her coach you can make suggestions. There is the text of a master class by Alfredo Kraus on the internet that discusses this point. Caruso's version which I also listened to has the same accents.

@gaytenor German and Italian work quite nicely as opera languages partly due to an absence of "true" German or Italian; dialects are almost distinct languages. Milanese and Napolitan tenors will perform this aria with different sounds.

God bless your grandad as he was fortunate enough to be a centurion&also fortunate enough to hear Caruso live. Many great tenors seem to say or intimate that Caruso was the greatest tenor.Caruso was the original interpreter of arias&songs and basically the foundation for every tenor that followed.Del Monaco seems to defer to Caruso only&seems in awe while listening to a Caruso Si Per Ciel here on YT which I currently cannot locate.MDM also emulated Caruso's phrasing in thr La Juive aria Continue

YesHellFrozeOver: I am second to none in my admiration for Jussi Bjorling but to compare a lyric tenor with a spinto tenor in an opera that REQUIRES a spinto voice is sheer nonesense. I would suggest that you listen to a live performance since I was told by a very musical expert and standee that Bjorling didn't have the power required to full out the climaxes of the aria. Tucker's voice was about twice the size of Bjorling's and that matters here.

@SHICOFF1 As I told sugarbist below there is a difference between speaking and singing but whatever way your talking about Lanza could butcher the language. If anyone wants to hear really bad Italian try Melchoir. It was so bad when he sang Otello at Covent Garden that a critic waited at the stage door and said "Oh Boo" to Melchoir.

Yes, Corelli was fantastic in certain roles.I never really enjoyed him in Forza.I thought he did a great Chenier&if I had a wish,I would like to hear him sing the Celeste Aida&Del Monaco sing the rest of the opera sighting Callas MDM1951 Messico.Perhaps the best Aida I ever heard.I don't think Corelli ever sang Manon.Tucker did do an excellent Manon&Forza&Chenier but the siren in my ear does draw me to Del Monaco&Tebaldi1953 Florence for Forza&I also think MDM's Manon was excellent.Continue

@gaytenor I definitely agree with the speaking a language and singing the same language as it would ALSO be impossible to sing the Neopolitan songs the same way the language is spoken. Maybe its the accent thats not really appealing to me. However i do not feel the same way when I listen to RT's Butterfly duet wIth Eleanor Steber, which i think is absolutely beautiful, posted by Pince Charming(VINYL)

I find Corelli's voice on records a little noisy&tiresome. But I saw him live in Trovatore in early60s at theMet& he was pretty spectacular, even with his overuse of portamento&scooping,His voice live was certainly more nervous& less droning than on records.I heard Di Stefano at Carnegie Hall concert in early 60s as well. His voice was full &round,a little tight on the hi-notes but his overtones were beautiful.similar to his records.MDM,also not without fault, was probably the most impressive live

Bringing opera to the masses was exactly what Lanza did.I think choosing Lanza for the part of Caruso was the right choice. However I do think the story line for the movie was very distorted&not accurate at all to say the least. It was the Lanza movie I enjoyed the least.

@TenoreRobusto1347 You have put forth a most articulate argument for Tucker's prowess as a singer. Yes he has superb power and technique - superior indeed to many of his peers either today or yesteryear. I might suggest however that you listen to the same aria as put forth by Jussi Bjoerling. He is more steady, and pretty much the best that ever sang it. It's here on youtube. Enjoy.

M. Lanzas voice is so divided again in every detail. I recommend Mario "Lanza Sunday Night at the London Palladium 1957" The fantastic performance of an ailing man, he sings full of humility, no pathos, 100% real emotions, although not opera singers, his performance is vocally and awesome also in terms of the thrifty gestures, where in I personally Tucker somewhat exaggerated find and therefore am I'm not 100% convinced of Tucker in this aria.
