One of the great scenes in all opera. Brunnhilde realizes that everything is now falling apart. The scene is directed beautifully with Siegmund shedding his clothes to wear a death shroud. Hoffmann sang beautifully for a short time, and Jones was always brilliant when she didn't push her voice and could sing lyrically.
@sabineb.56164 жыл бұрын
I agree! I love this scene. For me it is the most haunting moment of the whole Ring cycle, and a still very young and very wonderful Peter Hoffmann as well Gwyneth Jones interpret it in an understated and beautifully touching way. I love Siegmund's quiet defiance when he simply refuses to follow Brünnhilde into the blessed realms of Walhall because Sieglinde will not be there with him. Brünnhilde has probably never experienced that a fallen hero simply didn't obey her commands. Siegmund shows her what true love is! Today Siegmund would say "F.ck Walhall with it's heroes and so-called 'flower maidens', f.ck you, too, Wotan! I'm not coming without my lover who happens to be my sister!" And Brünnhilde who is Siegmund's sister, too, btw, cannot resist to help the ill fated couple. It's astonishing that this story of blatant incest wasn't a great scandal in Wagner's time. But Wagner presented it in such a beautiful and non-judgmental way that the audiences then and now simply have to root for Siegmund and Sieglinde. I am always very bummed when Wotan agrees to rigg Siegmund's duel with Hunding because of the domestic trouble with his prim wife Fricka!

@@castaway123100 Peter Hofmann was not a baritone. He was a heldentenor. A heroic tenor who sings in Wagner operas.
@sabineb.56164 жыл бұрын
@@castaway123100 , yes, Peter Hoffmann in his prime was on of the most handsome opera singers and he had a wonderful voice - but he was a tenor and not a baritone. He sang also Siegfried and most of all Lohengrin. It is very unfortunate that his prime was not a very long period. Some experts blamed his forays into rock music. But he had always been into rock music, and it's not known for sure why his operatic voice was so short lived.

What I like most in this scene and in the changes it triggers is the humanity. Siegmund has no more interest in Walhall after he has learnt that he cannot meet Sieglinde there. Brünnhilde is impressed and starts to rethink everything (her mission, the meaning of heroism, the power of human love) and in the end she will decide against the orders of her father Wotan. Well, we all know it won't end well. But it's all so deeply human.

Alles klar?!!
@chrisburg57065 жыл бұрын
I was a witness to his rise in the opera world. An amazing voice, but he was not a heldentenor. Opera houses had him sing all the Wagner repertoire way too early in his career's which eventually led to his vocal decline. Kirsten Flagstad said that it takes years to become a Wagnerian singer; she cautioned young singers not to take on those roles too early. Sadly, like many young singers, Hoffman's voice was wrecked by bad marketing before it reached its full potential.

Wasn't it because of his growing illness?

I do not care much about Wagner Ring, but the way great Cherèau sees the Siegmund and Sieglinde story is the most beautiful and moving thing Ihave ever seen on operatic stage. The camera and orchestra (Bravo Boulez) really caress the drama when it developes. And I have to add that great Matti Salminen really looks and sounds like a rapist in the first act.
