@Truth seeker I do no support Corporate Entities nor the Elites but I believe Human Advancement is good. The issue with corporations is that they have been allowed to grow too big, in some cases bigger than the government that they are in control of even politics. However human advancement through mechanization and automation is not a bad thing as it will allow Humans to focus on new things, develop new frontiers never possible before, which I see as a good thing.

@Truth seeker i hear you. but automation is a trend and it is the way to go. china has set automation for various industries as one of goals for modernization. i think america has to go that way. we just need to build new industries. china has 1.4 billions of people and it pushes automation, i don't think america should continue to ignore that.

China's automation helps explain why the US ports are having trouble keeping up with the volume of containers shipped to the US.

Way to blame China. But the US only imports enough things they want, they don't "help" process China's export.
@RayCromwell
@RayCromwell 3 жыл бұрын
The problem with the US ports isn't in handling the volume of shipping containers, it's that there are not enough truck drivers to pick up the containers and take them to their final destination. The pandemic forced a lot of truckers to stop working, and many of them never returned to working, perhaps because truck driving is a hard job, months on the road, away from family, long days driving, etc.

@@RayCromwell that's not true. I spend a lot of time at the Port of Oakland. I'm here right now. The facilities and systems are terribly outdated. It can take hours to get in and out. I've been here 5 hours before. I've ran out of drive time and had to leave a couple times within completing my transaction. Low quality customer service and lack of signage and instruction leaves unfamiliar drivers confused and wastes time. Union rules shut down the whole operation completely for shift change an hour twice a day, and a half hour lunch twice a day instead of overlapping and staggering start times. This causes lines to back up for a mile. There are plenty of drivers and with this kind of efficiency the existing drivers could up their production by 20-25%. Plus the simplicity would make drayage more appealing to other companies.

China and perhaps Asia in general surely has a misconception regarding so-called “western” belief. I for one have always held China in high regard. Not the government, but the people. With regards to innovation, especially where containerized shipping is concerned, yes, this technology and the philosophy behind it was born in the USA. The first shipping container was invented and patented in 1956 by an American named Malcolm Mc Lean. Mc Lean was not an ocean shipper, but was a trucker and by 1956 he owned the largest trucking fleet in the South and the fifth largest trucking company in all the United States.

Fully automatic docks are the trend of the future, but at the social level it will bring unemployment of traditional dockworkers, so the United States is very cautious, this is not a technical issue, it is a political issue. The dock loading and unloading business on the east and west coasts of the United States is subject to labor union organizations, which is inefficient, and the relationship between labor and management is tense. Qingdao Port is the first model to realize unmanned wharf in China. In recent years, Shanghai Yangshan Port, Shenzhen Yantian Port, Guangzhou Huangpu Port and Ningbo Port are all undergoing automation transformation. Therefore, among the top ten container throughput terminals in the world, China has seven terminals ranked high.
@jf9979
@jf9979 Жыл бұрын
My terminal has greater efficiency and productivity than the fully automated port that also operates in my city. We are not one bit automated. Automation is not about productivity, it's about cost cutting. Unionised workforces demand decent pay and conditions. Without them you will suffer at the hands of your employer who seeks to play on your insecurities and pay you as little as possible, even below the poverty line if you accept it. Every worker should be in a Union. Automation means more unemployment and that's why governments who depend on tax dollars are reluctant to fully support automation. Instead of tax money coming in, they'll be paying out social security and welfare.

@pete chau: Over emphasizing the military just because the US and the UK and other powers have done so is a bad idea. @ashwa1964
@ashwa1964 2 жыл бұрын
The military industry creates very limited employment, and if it is not for invading other countries, there is limited funding for troops and equipment used to defend homeland security. China's annual military expenditure accounts for 1.7% of the total GDP, or 230 billion US dollars, which is equivalent to 200 yuan/30 US dollars per person of 1.4 billion Chinese. A large amount of investment in China is in infrastructure construction. Private enterprises have no ability to improve the environment. The government invests in improving the environment to create investment opportunities. More enterprises can create more jobs, expand the economy, and benefit everyone. China will not spend big money on defense unless necessary, but it is still the second largest military spender in the world.

@@dpeasehead Exactly! I think China can do such amazing developments and gigantic projects partly because they DON'T try to lead the world in Military activity! And to some extent they are driven to make a larger investment than they would do, if we weren't pushing it constantly. I know that's a common enough thought! To their point of view I think military expenses might be a big waste, compared to (say) another titanic port, rail line, UHV electric transmission line, building new cities (!), and so many other astonishing things that give a social dividend! WE don't care about "general prosperity", "balanced development", "real economy", "co-ordination", and many other things that are clearly CENTRAL to the advance of China. So we are constantly surprised and alarmed at the rapid advance of China, because we just can't believe that a government would DO what it says it's going to do! There's no SECRET, but there are principles at work that are invisible to us no matter how much anyone tries to explain them.
