Had an Uncle who did that on one of my Dad's cars. Can't remember the story exactly something about a belt being too loose or something. Dad said it was fine and my Uncle grabbed it to prove otherwise. Think he lost the tip of his pinky to that lapse in judgment. Same guy years later backed over himself with his own truck. Jumped out of the truck thinking he had put it in park but had put it in reverse. Then he was too damn stubborn to go the hospital for it and just laid on the couch for like two months.

Well, not surprising. 3.85 stroke is a smallish big block stroke territory. If the engine thinks it's a big block, then feed it like a big block and it will act like a big block with no hypnotist required. Genius! Haha. Fun stuff. If you keep going bigger, up to a point, it will keep making more power. Thanks for what you do Richard. Lots of fun!

Those Z heads can make some great power. I ran a set on a 363 I built a while back from a 9.5 deck block out of a wrecked truck. I think it was around 11.3:1 comp calculated with that head. Big cam. Made 425-430 HP at the wheel on a chassis dyno. Similar torque. Engine is still racing to this day in a Fox but this is a Fairmont variety.
@GroovesAndLands4 жыл бұрын
I did a 393 years ago, with ported Vic Jr heads, the "5-oh HO" style Victor EFI intake, and a ~250º cam. Did 500whp @ 6300 and over 500lbft from 3500-6000. Nice combo, especially in the early 2000s!
@kennethpowers89954 жыл бұрын
GroovesAndLands I would have loved that power lol. Was your compression up there? And you were injected then MaF/MaP I guess? Mine had an Edelbrock intake and Edelbrock 750 carb on top of the Z heads. It was a very conservative tune though. I’ve since built 8.2 deck stuff that’s made more power than that engine NA. As a matter of fact I have made more power from an NA 310cid SBF lol. Revved a lot higher though and less torque but I built that for a customers Miata swap so it was never noticed as a flaw lol.
@kennethpowers89954 жыл бұрын
And my 363 cam was a Lunati mild truck type of profile 280/290 and .472/.496 at first but then switched to an Edelbrock with 299/302 and .573/.582. It had some cam.
@GroovesAndLands4 жыл бұрын
@@kennethpowers8995 Mine was injected with a ~100mm MAF and a huge (at the time!) 90mm throttle body. 1.75" headers, a 3" MAC pro-chamber mid pipe, the old flowmaster 2 chambers (before the delta flow ones), with dumps in front of the rear axle. Remains, to this day, the sweetest sounding small block anything I've ever heard. I recall compression being about 11:1, and I know I certainly had absolute minimum piston-to-cylinder head clearance - because "engines always run best when the pistons hit the head a little" IIRC, I was even able to get it to run smoothly at part throttle at about 17 or 18:1 air/fuel - so it even got really good gas mileage on the highway. It was a kickass combo for the time!
@kennethpowers89954 жыл бұрын
GroovesAndLands Yea we were making some really good combos back before it was second nature to see a 9 second stock LS Foxbody or the like. I also have a memorable soundtrack from the 363 build, I didn’t have any crossover though it was some ARH longtubes and then 3” back to some glass packs. I would like to see the results of the AFR 185 heads on the 392 with the XE282HR cam. Both can be found used. The AFR 185 heads are a bit cheaper new than the 195 or 205. As a side note I have regular unported GT40 iron heads on my 351w with an E303 and a Pro Comp (Stealth knock-off) dual plane and shorty headers. It has more bottom end than an 5.0L, but it does not mph at the track. Only 103 mph. I think the heads are too small flow wise for a 351w. Richard have you ever put nitrous oxide on something and have been disappointed? I see a lot of tests where a 100 shot is added and you got 100. It seems like a pointless test unless it is on a boosted engine where it gains more than 100.

I have to disagree a little about “nitrous always does the same thing on every combo”. I’d say realistically this depends on the state of tune the engine is in that you apply the nitrous to. If it’s already a very well built and efficient motor producing good power yes typicall you’ll get 100 HP from a 100 shot, 125 HP from a 125 shot etc. But an engine that isn’t built up at all say a stock engine, especially a high compression NA street/stock engine, you can end up seeing a lot more Hp than the jetting you use in the kit. A 50 shot on your average stock pony car picks up more like 70-80 HP typically. Another thing that varies from motor to motor is the amount of torque picked up by a given nitrous shot. A mild cam iron headed tired old small block may only see 70-80 ft lbs off a 125 shot but the likes of say a 3v mod motor will generally pickup a full 120-125 TQ off a 125 shot.

the nitrous jetting and bottle pressure determine the potential gain from the nitrous, then the tune, not the motor combo

@@richardholdener1727 Edit- I forgot this as well; the way the engine pulls it’s air makes a difference too. If your running a crappy intake that pulls nothing but hot air creating high IATs, that cooling effect from the nitrous alone will increase power. By the same token if you already have a very well designed intake and your IATs stay low on a regular basis, your going to see less of a gain than on the previous scenario. Again, I guess this might be considered state of tune in a way, especially with a modern engine where timing gets pulled from high IATs and then a retard doesn’t happen but an advance when the IAT is very low. And am I right in hearing you say the way the nitrous is introduced into an engine makes no difference? I don’t know about that. A plate kit on an older carburetor motor will often make much different gains than a direct port nozzle kit, even given the same jet sizes and bottle pressure. If you are more efficiently distributing the amount of oxygen introduced by the nitrous shot the engine is going to make more power, same for the opposite if a less efficient delivery method is used the gains will be less. I’ve literally seen with my own eyes two different kits with identical jetting make very different power levels. And we always keep bottle pressure around high 900’s or so, I try not to let that be a variable at the track because if the pressure is consistent I know what to expect from the hit.

You’ve dyno’d enough engines to know that a happy well breathing engine makes more power than one that’s choked on a couple holes. Some of those old perimeter plate kits definitely do not equally distribute nitrous to all cylinders so cylinder pressure (and therefore power production) will vary. However if I plumb a nitrous and fuel jet individually to each intake runner and each cylinder is balanced and happy that engine will make more power because it’s running more efficiently. I guess that could be considered part of “state of tune”, though.
