Hi Rick, great topic :) Opting for pure sleight of hand can actually help develop routines because the constraints can drive the creativity. But I like your point on the fact that gaffs don’t replace the need for sleight of hand and skills. I think that the main problem with gaffs is the price. A big portion of the cost is due to the fact that gaffs are made out of regular coins. So I think that the prices will go down if we start producing coins. And I mean producing coins with design, the same way we have cards now. Coins are also highly collectable and there’s an obvious interest in having unique coins. There’s already a lot of coins available like Grifters and Artifacts. And pure design coins like Ravn coins from Caroline Ravn and No.17 Le Chat Rouge from Stockholm17. But Mechanic Industries have Griner coins and they already took the nest step by producing gaffs and associating the coins with other products like cards, ring and key chain. I think this is a huge advantage because gaffs can be created from scratch. This flexibility will even allow to create new gaffs.
@RickHolcombe4 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't be much cheaper unfortunately. I've explored this idea with Jeff Copeland. Have you seen his coins? www.copelandcoins.com Much more beautiful than any of the ones you mentioned.
@CarlosSilva-xe8mm4 жыл бұрын
Yes I do know about Copeland Coins, sorry for forgetting to mention. Hum, this is an interesting topic then. I thought it would be cheaper to build gaffs from scratch taking advantage of metal injection and melding. For example, it would be easier to have nested shells that fit perfectly. Or thinner coins with black art on one side. Fused coins … my mind could go on ;) I'm also thinking of Metal Phone by Calen Morelli and Joao Miranda. It's a masterpiece and most of it is metal work.

Also this channel is incredible and should probably require a paid subscription. I don't know why but I'm so obsessed with sleight of hand and wanting to label myself as a purist. I don't have a good reason for it other than ego and maybe fear of getting caught out with a gaff which seems more embarrassing then being caught out with a sleight.
@RickHolcombe4 жыл бұрын
Just use them wisely and don't rely on them to accomplish an effect. See if/how they can augment an effect and if it you can get more done with the gimmick than just one trick.

@RickHolcombe4 жыл бұрын
Roy Kueppers made the copper/silver coin I used in the video. The quality is just OK. It was the only time I ordered from him. I've heard his work can be inconsistent. Todd Lassen is an excellent coin gaffer, but you need to understand that he loves what he does and he is a true craftsman. People complain about his customer service, but I've never had an issue. I've ordered form him 3 times over the years for different things. Just understand, he is 1 man and not a company; so you need to get in line and be patient. Jamie Schoolcraft is just as good in my opinion, I have also ordered 3 separate times from him. The wait for the coins was about the same as with Lassen. Son't forget about Bob Swadling and Mark Mason at www.jbtvusa.com I don't personally own any of their gaffs but have handled them in person and they are beautiful.

I don't believe that not using gimmicks is an issue with the ego. For me personally, it is more an appreciation of sleight of hand and an appreciation of the time behind it. Gimmicks are sometimes necessary in order to create a truly impossible effect, but if there is a way to do it with sleight of hand, then that way is much more preferable to me. A basic example is card to wallet. Yes, you could use a gimmicked wallet, but there are multiple ways to do it without a gimmick, so why use a gimmick?
